Activation/License/Language Help / Re: VISTA: Failed to save license key information
« Last post by mouser on September 20, 2007, 06:46 PM »
yes -- it's a flaw in my latest vista build and i will be releasing an update this week that fixed it.
until then a workaround is simply to run sc once as administrator and enter the key.  but expect a fix in the next couple of days -- i'm sorry i didn't release it sooner.

Hi james --
i think we got you sorted out over email, but to answer the question for any others who might wonder the same thing:

the answer is:
yes, click on those "activation" link in the email you get after you have donated, even if you are already a full member.  It will credit your account with each donation so you can give out the money to whomever on the site you wish (or to the general site account).

Ryan at cybernetnews.com has a nice review (with screencast) up today about a free program called Liquid Resize, which basically implements the cool resizing effect that everyone got so disproportionately excited about a few weeks ago.  It is cool though, and could be useful.

Just three weeks ago we got a glimpse of what an implemented version of such a technology could actually do, and as expected, applications and plugins are popping up all over that make use of the technology. This article will focus on one free application called Liquid Resize that has made huge progress over the last few weeks. Below we’ll highlight some of the features, and you can watch a video we put together on how to use the program.

DC member Wordzilla has done it again..  He replaced our old pjirc java-based web interface to our chat channel on efnet with a much snappier one based on cgi::irc.

You don't need any special software to use this -- it runs completely from the server and your normal browser.

You can see a screenshot below.  To enter the chat room, just click the "CHAT!" button at the top of any forum page.

You'll then be able to (text) chat live with the rest of the donationcoder gang 24 hous a day, 7 days a week.  Meet your favorite members and find out who is the craziest..

one unpleasant irony of this commercial though is that if you look at the percentage of female users, linux has to be far far *far* behind windows and apple.

If i can keep to 50% the projects that fall into this category then i'm having a good year.  :-\

I find that projects are like infections -- the best defense is to kill the idea as soon as i get it.. If i linger too much on it I will feel compelled to devote substantial time to implementing it until i can let go of it.

FlipSuite and Flipbook Printer / Re: v1.08.01 - book won't print
« Last post by mouser on September 18, 2007, 10:44 AM »
check the printer selection dropdown box after your project is loaded, make sure its set to the printer you want. (maybe try another printer if you have another, to see if it's related to that):

Living Room / Re: Question about the "spam/advertising links" rule
« Last post by mouser on September 18, 2007, 10:15 AM »
One other thing I should remind people, not because it's relevant to you Daniel but just for anyone reading this thread.  If anyone has one of those "affiliate" links in their signatures (which is almost always a bad idea), then they need to have a clear statement about what it is and that they profit from it.

Living Room / Re: Question about the "spam/advertising links" rule
« Last post by mouser on September 18, 2007, 10:09 AM »
i agree with replies so far -- by all means put your sites in your signature, but try to minimize the space they take up -- the music list is def too long imho and you might be better off without it completely.

in general i think the guidelines should be: try for as short (in terms of vertical height) a sig as you can live with, so as to minimize the space it takes up when reading posts.

ps.
hey maybe we can make a default setting that puts all signature text in a little pop-open plus sign box, like the spoiler thing.

Good news for those who like to read the New York Times online.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Times Co said on Monday it will end its paid TimesSelect Web service and make most of its Web site available for free in the hopes of attracting more readers and higher advertising revenue.

TimesSelect will shut down on Wednesday, two years after the Times launched it, which charges subscribers $7.95 a month or $49.95 a year to read articles by columnists such as Maureen Dowd and Thomas Friedman.

One of the members of our forum has posted a reply where he mentioned his freeware review site, and i thought it was worth it's own post.  No, not because today's review is about one of my programs, just because it looks like a great site well worth a regular visit.

some questions that come to mind:

1) how does he feel about the trends in web apps vs local pc apps? ie are all local pc apps going to be a think of the past, etc.
2) where would he rank things like marketing, seo, and program quality in terms of importance to success of a microisv.

i'm not sure this is on topic, but personally i find cvs and even svn (which is a lot better) inexcusably confusing to log into and checkout new repositories.

None are connected to the 'net 24/7. Does that matter?
no i don't think so -- the only tricky part will be figuring out how the client can request the right amount of information to work on while offline, i'm not sure how this is done yet.

Actually PrintConductor (free) can batch print more than just pdf -- it uses the native programs to do the main work.

PrintConductor can batch print 16 document types: PDF, DOC, WRI, WPS, RTF, TXT, XLS, PPT, PPS, POT, VSD, DWG, DXF, SNP, HTM, HTML.

PrintConductor supports any printer installed on your computer and provides you with instant access to the settings of the specified printer.

Add documents to the list using drag & drop, Open dialog box or auto-scan a specified folder and its subfolders for documents of needed types. Sort documents by name or type, preview before you print, and/or print any document(s) from the list.

A progress bar keeps you informed of the '%complete' status of the job. And, the job can be easily cancelled at any time in processing.

A bunch of other free pdf tools can be found here as well: http://www.esnips.com/web/PDFTools

ps. If you have $60 bucks to spare (ouch!) you can buy a batch & print pro, which is an excellent batch printer with some additional features, most notably showing page counts, which can be quite useful.

As some of you may know, I've been working on a little algorithm for this http://Netflix Prize programming contest, and it runs much too slowly for me to get all the data generated in time to submit.

To solve this, and to have a lot of fun, member Gothi[c] and I are (actually Gothi[c] is doing all the work on this) writing a client tool like http://folding@home and http://seti@home, which will allow anyone to download a little program and run it on their pc when they have time, and it will perform computations and submit them back to the server.

This is a wonderfully fun thing to do from an academic background, and i think it will be great fun to have some friends from here participate if you are willing.

I really need your help on this!

It will be about 5 days of panicked work where i would appreciate all of the pc time you could give me on your computers, your office or friends computers, etc.  Any pc you can find.  It's going to be so cool if we can get a lot of pcs running and churning through data simultaneously.. With your help, we can generate all the data in time.

So my plan is to work on the algorithm for another week while gothi[c] perfects the client, and then somewhere around sep 23 release the client and then we're on a rush to get as many pcs running it as possible.

More details will follow i just wanted to give people a heads up so they can plan ahead if need be.. any help is appreciated, from fastest pc to the slowest!

Thank you  :-*
