i'm gong to try to do some improvements to autoscroll capture very soon, and the following two things will be highest priority for me to do first:

1) a new semi-automatic mode which should work when all others fail but require user to page down manually.
2) ability to escape out of failed autocapture faster
3) ability to tell sc different ways to autocapture which might be like a wizard interface that will hopefully be able to find a method that works on even tricky programs.

Developer's Corner / Re: Software Copy Protection Questions
« Last post by mouser on September 23, 2007, 07:09 AM »
the fact that you are using garage games torque stuff is going to change everything -- and for sure the best thing to do is look on their forums for people talking about how they might protect their assets.

the problem is that torque is really made to leave files in their original state and work with loose files arranged in directories, etc.  in other words they didn't seem to give any thought to protecting media files, etc.

i wouldn't be surprised if they didn't change that in the future but that's how it is now.

of course the torque code is all available to you, so it wouldnt be too hard to write a custom encryption of the media files.

while f0dder's main points may be right, if you do this:

Tell the company that "protection" of that sort is futile, and that they should instead rely on copyright and the legal system to settle potential problems...

if you do that they are likely to fire you and hire someone who tells them they know magical tricks that will keep everything safe until the end of time.

i might suggest a more middle of the road approach.  find a suitable protection that doesn't inconvenience the user, and don't expect miracles from it.

a new version is now up which should solve this problem.

the new version has been silently updated (ie updater wont show a new version yet but if you force a download and install from dcupdater you will have new version; this lets me get some feedback from early testers before broadcasting the update to everyone).
25511
Anyone want to report yet on the improved vista masking of active window captures?

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Use locate32 with Farr
« Last post by mouser on September 22, 2007, 08:51 PM »
anyone who has been hoping for better farr interaction with locate needs look no further.  someone has just made a proper locate plugin for farr that is quite extraordinary and works wonderfully.

the really amazing thing on top of it's functionality is that the plugin was written in Delphi -- which is no small feat since all of the supporting helper code i wrote for farr plugin api was in c++, so he had to recreate a bunch of stuff in delphi.

very impressive but the real sweet icing on the cake is that now anyone who wants to can use delphi to make a farr v2 plugin by starting with his skeleton code and just customizing a couple of functions.

i can't wait till he posts it

General Software Discussion / Re: Using Nero 7 Anyone help????
« Last post by mouser on September 22, 2007, 06:12 PM »
Nero does so much different stuff.. and it's hard to know when one of its functions is going to be not quite good enough.

One thing that's not clear to me is if you are asking can it "capture" streaming video (i don't think so), or if it can convert video on your hard drive from one format to another, which you could have better luck with.

General Software Discussion / Re: Acronis True Image OR maybe not ???
« Last post by mouser on September 22, 2007, 04:23 PM »
The newest version of Acronis True Image (v11) has the ability to let you exclude certain files and folders from the full drive imaging.

To me this is sort of the holy grail of drive imaging that i have been waiting for, as it lets you do a true drive image and yet still mark certain giant folders or files you dont care about to be ignored.  Well done Acronis

the hero thing is an interesting twist, but i'm not sure it works.
the multi-screen thing also is a bit of a miss imho, and might make it confusing for kids and adults alike.

There was a related article recently that was interesting:

Desktop Linux? Stick a Fork in It!

It's over. The magic is gone. The dream is dead. The egg has fallen off the wall and no amount of "sudo" super glue can put his pieces back together again.

I'm referring, of course, to the not-so-recent departure of Con Kolivas from the Linux kernel development community. Con - that champion of all things desktop centric - hung-up his keyboard this summer, the victim of an ideological rift within the Linux community.

And try as he might, Con never could convince the powers that be that his way was the better way, this despite copious evidence of the effectiveness of his patches. Con's concerns – and those of like-minded Linux users who appreciated the need for a better interactive desktop experience – simply weren't shared by those at the helm.

I'm highlighting this story because I see it as another clear example of why Linux continues to fail on the desktop. Despite all the warm, fuzzy talk of open source and community development, the fact remains that, at the kernel level at least, Linux is still controlled by a small group of elitist "prigs." And if a particular feature or function isn't a priority to them, it isn't a priority for Linux as a whole.

I don't know the inner debates about this so i'm definitely not going to take sides -- and the truth is i'm friendly to the idea of retaining some control and guiding direction in the hands of a small group of people than many in the open source community, but i do find it interesting.

Living Room / Flash Tower Game of the Day: Toytown Tower Defense
« Last post by mouser on September 22, 2007, 04:37 AM »
You may be getting sick of tower game posts but it find the genre irresistible.. Here's another one highlighted by JayIsGames.com, who always do a nice long writeup of the games they find - sounds like a fun game for kids especially.

Aesthetically, the game is great and the pixel art is full of all the joy you can expect with pixel art. The ersatz mix of arrows, cannons, a castle you're defending and a Space Marine with a laser gun make the game either thematically diluted or pleasantly diverse, depending on your disposition. The enemies consist of typically non-scary creatures, flying pigs and penguins and little jellies—once again this can either come across as distractingly underwhelming or whimsically cute.

ps. nchsoftware also make some really good telephony software (like pc-based answering machine software, etc.)

The issue of software to share your desktop with others was raised most recently in this thread on our forum.  Here's a free solution which doesn't require any special software (though note that users can't control your pc only watch it).

ScreenStream lets others 'watch' your screen on their computers over the network or the internet. It is the modern equivalent of the overhead projector. When you turn on screen sharing others on your network (or even the internet) can view what is on your screen by typing the link (and optional access code) into their internet browser. They can continue to watch your screen until turn off screen sharing.

One of the main advantages of ScreenStream is that the viewers do not need to install any special software to view your screen. They just open it directly with their normal internet browser. It is also supports optional streaming audio so others can hear what you are saying.

it's hard to see why just installing mobysaurus would cause the problem.
