Find And Run Robot / Re: Protocol links?
« Last post by wraith808 on January 15, 2017, 11:03 PM »
You'll have to use the program to create the links, and put them into the folder.  Then, update the search folders setting to point to whatever folder you store the resulting links in.  It's not a FARR plugin, but rather something that creates true links out of steam links.  Then you can put them anywhere, and they act as normal links, i.e. findable by FARR.
OH! Okay, so the .dcupdate file is just a little extra to help keep the program up to date, and it doesn't serve any other function?

Has anyone come up with a clever way to maintain cloned links? Delete and create them as Steam games are added and removed? I've been looking at the possibility of doing this with Task Scheduler, and it looks a lot like I'd have to learn PowerShell scripting or else buy some sort of tool to monitor directories for changes...

That is correct. :)  And I've not heard anything automatic to do that.

You might use the Steam URL Converter, and place those URLs in a folder, and add that folder to the FARR search folder list.

Another good author is Dave Ramsay. His Total Money Makeover is good. As are Suze Orman's books. They both have similar central tenets but have different approaches so it might not be a bad idea to read one title from each author if you're new to this.

+1.  Dave Ramsay has some pretty good tenets that are easy to follow.  I've also found the YNAB method helpful (https://www.youneedabudget.com/learn/).  They also have hands-on classes- of course to push you towards their product, but they are good themselves. (https://www.youneedabudget.com/classes/)

So I'm looking for any thoughts/recommendations of hardware and software and tips and tricks to getting good production quality in videos, especially with regard to sound.

Any thoughts?

Well, are you recording cross talk from your fellow players, or will it be mostly just you speaking?  That will make a difference in your best choice.  I've used a Blue Yeti with a Filter before, and was able to get good results.  But that was *just* me.

There's also the pro version, but I'm not really sure of the difference.

Not much info, but hopefully it's helpful.

If i have to 'build from scratch, i am sure it can be done but would rather pay for a prebuilt setup based on a few spec requirements.

You don't have to build it from scratch yourself.  How much are they willing to pay?

We test everyone in the organization and find the percentage of employees who are prone to phishing attacks. Next we train everyone on all major attack vectors, and keep sending simulated phishing attacks to everyone on very a regular basis.

For anyone else who didn't know what that term was.

One could quite easily make a webservice that did this, i.e. queried the database based on user id/password and redirect them to their own page that had links on it.  I don't know of any out-of-the-box solutions, but I've found that if you give them the solution to their problem, and they balk at the money involved (especially the pittance that would be), then they have to accept that they can't have the solution.

I wondered about that too.  Never got a false positive on Delphi, as it's compiled, not interpreted like many of the others that false positives hit for.

I should also say that one thing I don't support and didn't like about this otherwise rather good video is the raised fists, which could potentially be a further discrete fascistic incitement to the sort of mindless post-election violence against people and in "protest" riots that was experienced (if not encouraged) in parts of the US. However, I am aware that that mindless violence was probably committed by and probably revealed a lot about a relatively small minority of American people and their perception of the need for real "democracy" - the majority presumably seeing it as being undemocratic to go around thumping people and causing property damage because your party lost a democratic election to a sizeable majority, or something.

The raised fist, or the clenched fist, is a symbol of solidarity and support. It is also used as a salute to express unity, strength, defiance, or resistance. The salute dates back to ancient Assyria as a symbol of resistance in the face of violence.  One might draw parallels to, most recently, Standing Rock's Water Protectors, or not so recently the Civil Rights movement in the United States.

more worried about malware than computer viruses

I really dislike this distinction that the vendors try to use.  I don't care if the malware is technically a virus, a trojan, a worm, or whatever - I want my anti-virus/anti-malware/anti-whatever to stop it and/or uninstall it.  For example I never really understood exactly what the difference was between Malwarebytes Anti-malware (MBAM) and Malwarebytes Anti-exploit (MBAE) despite trying to get clarification on their support forum.  I believe that in v3 those two products have merged.  That's the way it always should have been in my opinion.

I actually like the distinction, and appreciate the difference that they are trying to make.  If MBAM integrated all of the different variations into one product, they'd become as bloated as McAfee, Symantec, and all the others.  I like that they focus on malware, rather than trying to be anti-virus software.

I swapped to Windows Defender/Firewall and MBAM - and a dose of common sense. Been using it for years without problem and (famous last words) been safe.

Same here.

Hello DonationCoders,
I have already written a small program in AutoIT and I see that many of you use AutoHotKey. Is there a certain advantage to using AutoHotKey over AutoIT? Is there a feature set that is missing from AutoIT?

Please discuss.

I think it's personal preference, just like most arguments of this type.

http://stackoverflow...autoit-vs-autohotkey

http://paperlined.or..._and_autohotkey.html

http://advancedcase....t-or-autohotkey.html

http://www.computore...s_AutoIt_Review.html

Those are just from searching autoit vs autohotkey.

One distinction that is important for a lot of people:  AutoIt is freeware closed source.  AHK is FOSS.

I noticed in earlier newsletters that an application: QuickJump 2016 by CJ Gingerich, was going to be submitted  in this year's N.A.N.Y. that failed to materialise by the finish.

I'm actually using quickjump 2016 quite regularly.  Was there something else that was supposed to be added?  I thought it was done.  Perhaps it's because you thought it was supposed to be for this year's NANY?  It was for last years.

I thought Incubus was her brother, and she gave him a new host. But aside from that, I still don't understand why--if he is an actual god, and she is only god-like--why does he do everything she says. And again, he can kill in an instant, and everything he touches--except the Suicide Squad--is immediately destroyed. I honestly can't remember if it ever came down to kicks and punches with the Suicide Squad (not counting the one obvious exception), but it still seems to me like he could have annihilated them instantly.

You are correct... I misspoke, as that's exactly what I meant.  And I thought you meant motivations, not literal actions.  Of course, if he'd done that, it wouldn't have been much of a movie.  But they didn't give any in-movie explanations.

General Software Discussion / Re: Question re/ future software project
« Last post by wraith808 on January 07, 2017, 12:01 PM »
Well, the development is just as much a 'pain' as is any xaml project (I'm using Xamarin Forms with xaml, as that is the advised way to go for mobile dev. and working in VS2015 sp3, not Xamarin studio, on Windows 10), but VS doesn't have any Xamarin specific auto-complete support (yet) or form designer/viewer, so that takes some searching for the correct keywords to use. But all in all it's been a rather pleasant experience, more so if you're a Visual Studio fan/addict ;D (I'm more of an Eclipse/Java fan :tellme:, but do 'speak' C#-ish too).

I guess I'm glad that I don't use the designer :)  I'll have to try it (well, currently I'm in training for docker and EC2, so it will have to wait until that's done), but thanks for the feedback!

There are quite a few threads out there on this issue, but no real authoritative source; I guess because they don't really want you to get around it.

On another point, it would seem that these scripts that were posted above should be more rightly posted in the Windows 10 thread, as most won't see them in this thread dedicated to a NANY entry.  And I've posted what I did to get it not to reboot there, and am using it currently.  Just a thought.

That particular script solves a different problem, i.e. disabling reboots.  The purpose of this program was to allow you to set your active hours to longer than 12 hours,

But what would be the actual reason for why anyone would want to do that, if not to prevent unwanted, unexpected, forced reboots?  :tellme:

I don't care if it reboots.  If I turn off reboots, then I'm likely not to do it for a long while.  And if it installs and doesn't reboot, no other windows installer based installers will work because it will have pending installer actions.  I just want to shorten the window.  Right now I have it so it doesn't reboot, and a few times I've either not been able to install something, or had strange effects because I haven't rebooted yet.

You could setup 2FA, and that would have the simple expedient of making a keylogger useless.

I probably stopped reading after iOs, Android, Windows and looked only for the download button ;D ;D ;D

But how was using it?  I'd tried before, and it was not very intuitive getting the sample project to Android, so I abandoned it.  I was wondering about your experiences.

Have a look at Xamarin (Microsoft-owned these days). It's multi-platform-mobile mostly plus Windows Universal apps (but not mac, afaics) with up to 95% shared code, and does support sqlite3 databases and internet connection for data-syncing (ofcourse). Programming is done in C#.
Using it for my NANY 2017 entry 8)
How was that?  Using Xamarin for your entry?

Developer's Corner / Re: Windows Update Controller
« Last post by wraith808 on January 03, 2017, 04:22 PM »
Overall I really like Windows 10 (and it has some nice security and performance things under the hood!) - but Microsoft does seem hell-bent on enforcing a couple of things in ways I really don't like (telemetry, forced windows updates + boots).

I'll be kinda surprised if you get it to respect registry values!

The thing is... it was.  And it was working for a *lot* of people.  My program was even working.  So much so, that when I asked the question on the ten forums, they scoffed.  Then someone looked at the issue on a VM, and noticed that it no longer updated in the interface.  I think that they patched that particular back door to get around active hours out of existence, and did it quickly from th evidence that's left.  :(

Im still trying to work it oput, but it's honestly academic at this point, rather than me having any illusions this is going to turn out well.
