Best E-mail Client / Re: A new start -- IMAP, FastMail, Windows Live Mail
« Last post by Josh on July 13, 2007, 12:48 PM »
HTML is a must for me. As soon as I get home, I plan to trial Windows Live Mail and see how it fairs. Thunderbird, as stated above, is really nice and easy to use with IMAP. I love the default view that doesnt display the FULL PATH to the folder in the folder tree (inbox.something.somethingelse.folder). Thunderbird, however, has a tendency to lose my current config and restore to defaults everything. Plus, the non-existant backup feature is another annoyance I have. I wish that someone would make an IMAP client that works well and has a robust feature set. Mulberry would be nice, however, as pointed out it doesnt have a very active development cycle. Outlook would be nice if microsoft cared more about IMAP. But seeing as IMAP isnt really a CORPORATE feature, I dont forsee outlook playing too far into that arena.

Lets see, I wont be tired because my wife will be driving :) I dont need home turf advantage because we train to fight on all sorts of foreign terrain. Mouser might have brains, but does he know how to use them ;-) My money is on myself and my trusty M24 sniper rifle with 2 mile optical sight.

Dont worry, my plans to get mouser drunk still forges on untattered and undisturbed like a freight train from san francisco to dallas tx.

tinjaw, I think you've convinced me. The only thing I have to ask them about is pricing and special options for extended storage of mails plus what their backup policies are. Coming from you tinjaw, I will place extra emphasis on my decision since I respect your input :) Thanks!

Best E-mail Client / Best IMAP Client
« Last post by Josh on July 12, 2007, 06:18 PM »
I know everyone says that mulberry is the best imap client, however, I would like some opinions. I currently use t-bird, but have learned that it does not EXPUNGE or PURGE deleted items, merely hides them from view. There are also a few minor annoyances with t-bird that I have. Mulberry appears nice, but I dont know how much development is being done on it.

What are the other major players? Anyone have some opinions? I am looking for something that is easy to use and configure.

How is tuffmail as far as redundancy and server outages? That is the one thing I require. I want to dump my current provider, although they have been good to me, simply because of a lack of redundancy. If they have a server outage, I need my email up as it is a prime means of communication for me. I will be checking out mulberry and see how it fares compared to thunderbird.

DcUpdater / Re: LATEST VERSION INFO THREAD - DcUpdater - 1.12.05 - JUN 30, 2007
« Last post by Josh on July 10, 2007, 04:06 PM »
mouser, I have a few suggestions:

1. Version history included in the update list.

2. Only run one copy of the program at any time (Dont allow more than that, I've come to my pc with 4-5 copies running).

3. Ability to kill already running copies of existing applications so that a reboot is not required.

Thoughts?

General Software Discussion / Re: roboform2go or sticky password?
« Last post by Josh on July 09, 2007, 09:02 PM »
I save the passwords in roboform and then type the important ones into keepass.

By the way, you can get roboform for free (base roboform) via trialpay. Check it out at roboform.com

I would like to see a plugin, if someone is willing, or perhaps a separate app which integrates farr into the windows taskbar similar to google deskbar and allows it to always be displayed and have results popup from the taskbar. This would be awesome and make farr that much nicer to access. You can even assign a custom hotkey to focus the taskbar portion of farr and type your search there. Any takers?
2560
Well then add it mousey! Why are you SHAMMING?
2561
plist is good
2562
I know this is a bit nit-picky, but can you rename this to PrinterList? When I see "List Printer" I get confused and think it is going to PRINT some kind of list.
2563
What I would like to suggest is a right click context menu which allows the following:

Starting a service, Stopping a service, restarting a service, changing startup type (with a sub-context menu containing a list of startup types).

I, for one, love this idea! Keep up the good work!

General Software Discussion / Re: A Guide to Trying Out Linux Distros
« Last post by Josh on July 01, 2007, 05:18 PM »
No, and there wont be until linux is as easy to install and use as windows. Thats what most techies dont understand. Linux is all well and good, its fast, stable, and powerful. However, the weakness it has is that windows has spoiled users and given them what they want. Something that JUST WORKS and doesnt require all this extra work to keep running. Until linux can achieve this, it will remain a niche product (much like opera)

I never had any of the described problems when I trialed their internet security suite (which is still installed and running). Yes, by default, it makes you setup rules for your apps, but after that it has been smooth sailing.

As for having to swap your hard drive to another computer, I honestly dont see how this would allow you to fix something that having it installed in the other PC wouldnt unless you had other HARDWARE issues on the original PC.

Living Room / LCD TV Protective cover
« Last post by Josh on June 30, 2007, 05:36 PM »
Does anyone know if such a thing exists to protect the screen of an LCD tv from smudges, fingerprints, etc? I am looking for one for a 46 inch tv if possible. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If someone could do this as a plugin for the farr contest, I would love to test it!

I plan on destroying said bookcase, but shhhh, dont tell mouser
2572
Roboform is well worth its cost but now you can get it for free via trialpay. I recommend everyone try it out. This program is the sole reason I dont use opera right now.

Yes it does, http://shamurai.admu...r.com/register.shtml

You can take advantage of trialpay :)

Word Processor Roundup / Re: Biased
« Last post by Josh on June 17, 2007, 10:48 AM »
Exactly, open source is not a factor unless you are a large corporation and plan to modify its source code. People rave and rant about OSS because MOST of it is free. But tell me, how many of these people actually USE the source code? How many actually take advantage of what OSS really offers?

A review, to me, should be about features, not about whether or not its open source, uses a proprietary format, or is made by INSERT MAJOR COMPANY HERE. If you cant rate a piece of software fairly because its from microsoft or another major corporation, then dont review the piece of software.

Word Processor Roundup / Re: Biased
« Last post by Josh on June 17, 2007, 07:14 AM »
I happen to agree here. I've read zaine's reviews and posts on other websites and I see this same bias applied there as was in this review.

Open source should only be a consideration in choosing a product when the person/company has intent to modify it. Open source does not suddenly make a product that much better simply because of this fact.

Most of what I read that is negative against Microsoft and the major COMMERCIAL products in this review is opinion and not something that I, as a consumer, would base my purchase/use of a software program on. I am not going to choose a program just because it supports ODF, I am going to purchase and use a program because it supports the formats I require or my job requires. I am sorry but there aren't many major organizations which utilize ODF.

When I read the reviews of certain products in this Round up, I find more and more bias towards an open source solution rather than the commercial solutions. I also see the huge negative bias towards Microsoft and its products simply because, as said in the roundup, "They are microsoft".

When choosing a solution, I look for one that best suits my needs, not one that supports some format which is trying to make a standard. When the day comes that ODF actually makes a dent in the market-share of being a de-facto standard, I will re-evaluate my product choice and use it, but until then, while its nice to see a product support ODF, its not going to be, as I am sure others can agree, a major deciding factor or one that says "Oh, it supports ODF, forget these other products".

Usability is far more important to me, as is feature content.

Microsoft's format is not proprietary, and I would like to see documentation to prove otherwise since the claim has been made. The MS-OOXML format has such a large documentation set because every time they release something, some company sues them for lack of documentation. They are being proactive in this effort and trying to support OOXML as a legit format and one that anyone can adapt.

I like the reviews on DC, but I really hope that personal bias can be left to the side when they are written. I saw this same bias applied to the email review because the reviewer was a BAT user themselves.
