N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Pledge & Pre-Release: Printer PaperSource Explorer
« Last post by Ath on December 02, 2011, 01:47 AM »
I was actually wondering why PPSE thought I had custom paper in trays 1 & 2.
That info is straight from the driver. Originally I never thought about getting current configuration from the printer, as I was just interested in the  binnumbers :-[.
I've been experimenting/investigating with reading current info from the PrintServer, but that has the disadvantage of using different names for the inputbins :'( but I'm trying to match them. Not sure yet if the bin-type has anything to do with the paper type setting, I'll compare those too to see if there are differences or more accurate data. I'll post an update tonight (CET), so we can see if/how my matching algorithm works out :tellme:

Maybe I should add a disclaimer like:
Any discrepancies caused by drivers are the manufacturers' responsibility :P

But I've found that once I figure something out in WPF/XAML, the solution is a lot easier to implement, a lot more straightforward, and easier to maintain.
Yup, that, and stick to MVVM.

SJ, I'm investigating this, to see if I can detect what trays are actually available/installed. Usually it can be either set from the Advanced tab on the printer settings, or it's detected by the driver by querying the printer. Now to get my prying fingers at that info...

Hey wraith, that sounds (no looks yet) great

Hm, a bit OT, but I do see the DisplayLink drivers (for a same MIMO screen :-*) having the issue of blanking the screen for several seconds a few times during boot, but eventually the login screen shows and I can log in. And I never unplug the MIMO.

More On-topic:
DisplayLink did release a new driver (6.1, previous 5.6), just last week, maybe that helps? (I just saw them, and haven't installed yet)

Totally on-topic:
I just googled this tool: http://www.disableusbports.com/ that you could give a try 8)

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Pledge & Early Beta: Ethervane Echo
« Last post by Ath on November 30, 2011, 06:15 AM »
That's what Excel (sometimes) does. Perhaps version 2003 does that more than 2007. Basically, Echo sits there waiting until Windows tells it that clipboard contents have changed. You start Excel, and Excel rewrites the clipboard all by itself - that's a bad thing to do.
Is there a possibility that this is caused by some Excel add-in installed on the users' system? Some VBA scripters take rogue steps 'to get it working', and never look back after that. :o

If I'd need 32 GB I wouldn't be putting that in a laptop, but in a proper desktop with a huge processor, not available in a laptop, for pulling all those Virtual Machines through the clay. ;D

Developer's Corner / Re: Ribbon UI - is it really THAT good?
« Last post by Ath on November 29, 2011, 01:45 AM »
This MSDN page gives help in making a decision whether to use a ribbon or not: http://msdn.microsof...esktop/cc872782.aspx
This (MS) Blog entry is also quite useful, and more geared toward the Office 2010 (IMHO improved) Ribbon: http://blogs.technet...the-ribbon-mine.aspx
Maybe that helps.

The main separation that I make is:
  • Is the application document-oriented, like Word or Excel, (or help-authoring for that matter) then a Ribbon can be quite productive.
  • Is the application data-centered where there are a lot of selections to make and field-based data-entry then Ribbon UI doesn't help much, and a Menu and/or Toolbar based UI would work just as fine, and save quite a bit of screen real-estate too.

But that doesn't mean that I can always do it like I think it should be done :P

« Last post by Ath on November 28, 2011, 05:13 AM »
It can be dragged to the second monitor, but it isn't 'allowed' to stay there, probably because the x/y coordinates are normalized to the current screen-size instead of the desktop-size. The date-hint does show on the second monitor in my setup :)

never tested it with multi-monitor and have no way of doing so
We, fellow DC-ers, can do that for you :D

Hm, Chrome (both -dev and Canary builds, v17) is also a tad out of line:

« Last post by Ath on November 25, 2011, 07:12 AM »
Looks like a typo in de code, the max normal path/filename is 261 characters, while SC allows for 161, dodgy or on purpose?
2541
Hm, I found Special Effect Options/ Quick Borders, but it only allows a Width of 9 pixels to be entered, and manually modifying the ini file gets it reset to 9 on startup :'(
2542
I just tried the 'Border for Image' option, on the right-side toolbar in SC, and selected 'Simple Border Around Image - Outside (resize)', and then repeat 10 to 25 times, should give your nice thick border. Unfortunately there's no keyboard shortcut for that option (or I just didn't find it).

And creating a new pst file, then copying all folders over, delete the old pst, does that help (or was that option no. 1 in the other pages, that I didn't look at)

Hm, I got the 3.23 version in the GAOTD deal a few months back (couldn't find the link just now) and am a bit reluctant to upgrade, as I wouldn't like to lose the the free Pro features by getting this upgrade :-[

« Last post by Ath on November 24, 2011, 02:44 PM »
Been using that for 5+ years now, just upgraded a few weeks ago. Still gotta do the wife's PC too

Must say still some spam get's through, but that's usually because it has (one of) my e-mail addresses as the sender, that's the new fashion (again) in spam-land I guess
It probably get's through because I have it set at Normal Aggressiveness, but I have the standard plugins enabled except for the DCC filter, that's been very slow ever since the first version I ever used. Might need to re-enable it and try again, my connection speed is a lot better now ;)
