Living Room / Re: Extended Character Aascii Art questions
« Last post by Edvard on February 19, 2007, 01:03 PM »
Nope-doesn't work. I can open it and select the text and use the font, so it displays correctly, but still won't print as displayed. I have a feeling that it is more an issue with my printer than anything. The Terminal font is a bitmap font, correct? Maybe it just doesn't translate over to postscript (which my printer uses). I have tried ripping the .txt file to PostScript 2 ways: 1- using the printer driver and 2- using GhostScript. Either way does not work.

Living Room / Extended Character Aascii Art questions
« Last post by Edvard on February 15, 2007, 06:25 PM »
Ok, I understand ascii art. No prob. But what about the extended character set from "terminal" font? Let me explain...

I use the "tree" program to make file listings. If I open it up in Notepad, all is fine, I can see the tree lines...

ClipBoard-1.jpg

But then I go to print it, and this is what happens...

ClipBoard-2.jpg

No big deal, I can pass the /A switch to tree and it'll turn out ok, but then a similar issue came up...

Remember the .nfo files that were found in many *cough* 3rd-party security patches *cough* that had fancy ascii art?
I had downloaded and tested a file find utility (you can never have too many) and inside the zip there was a very nice .nfo file:

ClipBoard-3.jpg

On a whim, I tried to print it. Surprise surprise, it wouldn't print the shade blocks as they appeared.

So, now I have two questions.
1- Is there any way to print the extended characters?
2- Is there a text-mode drawing program that utilizes those extended characters? (looks like fun!)

I realize there is a HUGE history behind those characters and it seems to be one of those things common to the computing world wherein something creatively coded and immensely useful for it's day gives way to waves of the future, but still manages to pop up like zombies in a Romero flick...

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: eyeOS - Online "Operating System"
« Last post by Edvard on February 15, 2007, 02:15 PM »
Maybe we can make a comparison:
The OS on your desktop computer = Driving your car.
NoMachine + FreeNX = Driving your car which is controlling a robotically-driven car.
Goowy, YouOS, etc. = Playing a video game in which you are remotely controlling a robotically-driven car.

 ;D

I believe folks are calling these "Online Desktops" nowadays

In the case of Cosmopod, it's a little more correct... you are actually using a remote os.

With the others, I agree... it's just a web app programmed to act like an os.

Wow, these ARE getting popular:

CosmoPod
What is CosmoPOD?
Ever need access to your personal files and applications from work or while on the road? Tired of lugging around your laptop or hard drive?
With CosmoPOD, you get the same desktop, whenever, wherever. Your desktop lives online, so its not glued to the computer you happen to be using!

cosmopod-thumb.jpg

Goowy
What is goowy?
goowy is a service that offers you simple, intuitive tools for communicating and sharing on the web.

goowy.jpg

(love those Gant3 icons...)

DesktopTwo
Desktoptwo is a free web-based desktop or webtop (some call it a WebOS, although we feel that's a bit premature... for now) that mimics the look, feel and functionality of a local computer, all contained within one browser window and fully accessible from any Internet-connected device.

General Software Discussion / Re: Living without AutoHotkey - possible?
« Last post by Edvard on February 13, 2007, 11:40 AM »
edbro: I also use PowerPro and AHK. I use PowerPro to build menus and launchers and manage hotkeys, and I use AHK to build "mini-apps" as front-ends to command-line tools.

Besides, I hate PowerPro's scripting. Autohotkey is much easier to understand.

HOLY SMOKES!!!

Mouser and tinjaw, you guys nailed quite a few of 'em, but there are WAY too many to list here. Partly because back in the day, you could watch ALL SATURDAY without having to change the channel. Quite a bit to recall there... Oh no, they're all coming back now...
Motor! Tires! Chassis! SPEED BUGGYYYYY!!!!!!  AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!

Seriously, I must say I hated the smurfs. Hated. Me and my Phreaker phriends started a smurf killers club. We would cut flat smurf shapes out of blue balloons and call them "Smurf Skins" (while waiting on downloading pipe-bomb and blue-box construction plans off a pirate BBS on my friend's Commodore 64... we was baaad)

Living Room / Re: Poll : What is the most useless key on the keyboard
« Last post by Edvard on February 13, 2007, 10:56 AM »
I am constantly using 'Insert' because the default behavior for the windows command-line is 'overwrite' mode  >:( >:( >:(

I have only ever had to use the 'Scroll lock' key one time...

I used to have an IBM 200MHz motherboard that had a bug (tell me if you've heard this one before...)
The CPU would not run full speed unless the keyboard buffer was full.  Scroll Lock did the trick.

Anyways, that happened exactly one time in my entire time using PC keyboards. (I notice this poll is biased towards them, I wonder what the 'useless' keys are on Mac keyboards, or other keyboards in general?)

Wow, that is cool!

BTW- Tempest was (and still is somewhere in the deep, dark corners of my psyche) my absolutely positively most favorite video game of all time bar none hands down no contest.

One of these days I'm going to modify an old mouse to make a 'spin-knob' and fire button so I can play it on mame...

Someone I work with showed me a Website that used realistically rendered Flash objects to view page content.
The individual pages were accessed by pulling the drawer handle of a labeled file cabinet, documents were read by opening a file folder pulled from the cabinet or flipping the pages of a book... all Flash objects.
I suppose such an idea could be translated to the desktop, with Flash interfaces to Explorer functions and using touch screens instead of the mouse...

Has anybody seen the site I'm talking about? My co-worker doesn't remember at all what it was.

General Software Discussion / FLV Online Converter
« Last post by Edvard on February 01, 2007, 11:57 AM »
Usually, I would prefer it to go the other way, but...

This service converts a Flash Video / FLV file (Youtube's movie, etc) to MPEG4 (AVI/MOV/MP4/MP3/3GP) file. The service is using a compressed domain transcoder technology. Converts FLV to MPEG4 faster and losslessy than a typical transcoder.

When you submit an url, this service will download and convert to the video format. Then you can download the converted file.

MrCrispy: The feature you are looking for is usually called "Active Window Switching" Look for it or something similar in the configs.

f0dder: They all use different ways. I assume those APIs are rather new, XP-centric? So they're available for newer apps to use. All the virtual desk apps previously either used the  "hide" function or moved windows off the visible space, and at least one I tried a while ago (that failed miserably) simply minimize/maximize sets of windows automatically. I know that the more "intelligent" ones will allow different hiding methods for different apps because some "child-window" type things like older versions of Photoshop tool windows didn't play well with some methods.

Trouble is, so many root beers tend to taste like pepto-bismol if they're not done right. Stewart's is nice, I like their cream soda better though. Chugs Choice and Virgil's are my favorites, even if they get only a little better than average at http://www.rootbeerreviews.com/ and Virgil's used to use real sassafras (now known to cause cancer in California...)

FTW-
Sudo for Windows (sudowin) allows authorized users to launch processes with elevated privileges using their own passphrase. Unlike the runas command, Sudo for Windows preserves the user’s profile and ownership of created objects.

hit the 'Search' button:

and do a search for posts by you:

The only thing is, you can't just search for yourself, you have to give it 'something' to search for.
The letter 'a' usually does it.

Living Room / Amazing tabletop parts fabrication machine
« Last post by Edvard on January 24, 2007, 11:32 AM »
Fab@Home is a website dedicated to making and using fabbers - machines that can make almost anything, right on your desktop. This website provides an open source kit that lets you make your own simple fabber, and use it to print three dimensional objects. You can download and print various items, try out new materials, or upload and share your own projects. Advanced users can modify and improve the fabber itself.

Fabbers (a.k.a 3D Printers or rapid prototyping machines) are a relatively new form of manufacturing that builds 3D objects by carefuly depositing materials drop by drop, layer by layer. Slowly but surely, with the right set of materials and a geometric blueprint, you can fabricate complex objects that would normally take special resources, tools and skills if produced using conventional manufacturing techniques. A fabber can allow you explore new designs, email physical objects to other fabber owners, and most importantly - set your ideas free. Just like MP3s, iPods and the Internet have freed musical talent, we hope that blueprints and fabbers will democratize innovation.

Way.
Freakin'.
Cool.

Whoa, that jazz horse runs a lot of colors, but I agree.

My personal taste in jazz goes from the traditional:
Bobby Hutcherson, Keith Jarrett, Vince Garaldi, Wes Montgomery...
To the eclectic:
John Zorn, Sun Ra, Kronos Quartet, Albert Ayler, Peter Brotzmann...
To eardrum damage:
Merzbow, Eyvind Kang, Painkiller, Naked City...

Don't listen to much nowadays, but back in the day, ooh yeah and who could forget Mingus!?!

jgpaiva: Thank you for giving Dexpot a thorough run-down. It was too complex for what i use virtual spaces for. I'm going to link to this thread from my mini-review.

Maybe that will help. Here's some screenshots of my favorite, JsPager.
This is my screen. Taskbar to the right side, PowerPro launch bar at the bottom, and a curious rectangular thing at the top:
screen.jpg
What is that thing? It's a Virtual Desktop program called JSPager. Just FYI, a "pager" is the graphical interface to the concept of Virtual Desktops, or Virtual Window Managers as some call them. Not all virtual desktops utilize pagers (some put numbered buttons or arrows in the Tray for view switching), but I prefer the ones that do.
Here's a close up of the pager:
jspager1.jpg
JSPager happens to be skinnable, and could just as easily look like this:
jspager2.jpg
or this:
jspager3.jpg
But I digress...

Here's what I do with it:
It shows four squares with some miniature representations of the windows I currently have open. Each of those squares is a "virtual window" and each of them has certain windows open in them. I can switch to any of them by simply clicking on the relevant square. If I click a taskbar item, it switches to the desktop that is currently holding the window of the program I selected.

Imagine you are sitting in a chair in front of 4 desks:
--On Desk 1 are a few paperback books.
--On Desk 2 are some business papers, a stapler and a pen.
--On Desk 3 is a stereo system with a few CD's lying about.
--On Desk 4 is a pad of watercolor paper, a few paint tubes and some paint brushes.

Depending on what sort of task you are doing at the time, you may slide your chair to the relevant desk, while keeping aware of the other tasks waiting to be experienced on the other desks, and the separate tasks do not overlap each other.
THAT is why I keep virtual desktops. When I am doing emails, I have the window up with Outlook and the File Manager. When I am on the internet, I have the windo with Firefox on full screen up, etc. etc. etc.

I hope our enthusiasm has not confused you, I can definitely see where a single screen is elegant in it's simplicity but it's just not enough for me.

Hope this helps,
-edvard
