How can I not try a utility named Splat?
Yeah, don't hang around here if you don't—it's either SPLAT or split!
-cranioscopical (January 04, 2015, 05:57 PM)

My grammar is rusty.  Is it Slpit, Splat, Splut?  :)

that'd be the present, past, and past participle tenses

I love physics.  I'd enjoy working with one of those participle accelerators.  :)

You just had to slpit in there, didn't you!
-cranioscopical (January 05, 2015, 09:06 AM)

Heh.  Didn't even see that one.  I slpitted up there.  :)  Reverse typed chars I do enough to have to hotkey to sawp 'em back.  ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced

Might be time to set up a VM and give it a go.

Just thought I'd let you know.. I had problems with the original W10 preview x64 iso and VMWare Player 6.x. (The install hung at 50% Setting Up Devices.)  But after I updated the Player to 7.x the OS installed and ran smoothly.  VMWare Tools installed without problems. I haven't tried the newer builds yet with Player 7.  I've been playing with Linux VMs searching for the Glass Grail I've been hearing about with this Plasma stuff.  If installing in VMWare I suggest you do a custom install and turn off all the settings to share info and update drivers/apps.  That seems to cut the install time to about 45%.  It makes it bearable.  :)

I don't have any smart phones or tablets.  Otherwise I'd be more inclined to check out the W10 Apps. But since I'm only interested in Desktop stuff at present, it looks more like W7 and Linux multiboot would be my speed.  I have to learn more about GPT and UEFI etc.. before installing on the metal though.

Aside from all the Apps vs Desktop and plain Jane UI vs Glass, it seems each release of Windows sticks more stuff between the OS and the user.  It's to the point where just reading windows and moving them on the desktop requires utilities to Run As Administrator.  A bit silly really.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: patchpae
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 04, 2015, 05:52 AM »
Heh.  This reminds me of an old Dos utility that allowed graphics card memory to be "stolen" and used as expanded memory when in video "text mode."  I imagine someone used the pae patch for some database or other software that needed the memory space.  It sounds like a situation where there's no budget for hardware but there is excess software development time available.  IOW, I suspect somebody got a graduate student to cook this up to jury rig some task that had to be finished.

I'm with Shades.  It likely will cause more grief than joy.  :)

I always sed it'd be useful to have something like this.

That's funny.  But I think I would have gone with

The problem with Walgreens is that none of their sale prices apply if you don't have one of their member cards.
-40hz

The whole hing with the cards is to be deliberately inconvenient.  With the sales systems they have now there should be a "would you like to be entered in our discount program and get some filers in the mail etc..?" and if you check Yes, that's it.  If you check No you can change your mind at any purchase.  As soon as the things sees your payment method it knows who you are.  Why do they have to scan a bar code off a card except to piss you off if you don't have the card on you?

First time I paid with a credit card in Marshalls the clerk checked my ID and looked at the card.  Now I just swipe and that's that.

I remember for a time every little shop in my town had a card with something free after ten purchases.  I had a wallet full of these stupid cards for clerks to punch with a paper punch.  Super inconvenient.  After a time I just took the hit on missing the freebies.  It was worth it.

This one cracks me up.  :)

Isn't that the Walmart-application computer?!?  -- nice  :)

I just figured she ripped it trying it on.  The old anti-theft spycam in the changing room shot.

Either that or it's a new design for those too lazy to unbutton their pants when using the commode?

Maybe this just shows that Wal-Mart is ripping (off) its customers...

I always thought Walgreens had over-priced instant coffee; that is until i went to Walmart.
Same brand and quantity but Walmart wanted about three bucks more than Walgreens.
'Save money, live better'?  yea.. right.  ;D

Somehow I don't think I'd accept any Folgers Crystals from this woman!  ;)

also...if gandalf can blast hundreds of orcs away with his ball of light from his staff, why doesn't he just do it in the beginning of every major battle...or just repeatedly?
-40hz

That would be cheating.  Too easy.  :)

Along that line, what drives me nuts about Vampire films or TV shows is after all the bragging they do about "I'm 800 years old" and "I'm 2000 years old" etc..  Somebody pokes 'em with a sharp stick and they pop.  If it's that easy to kill 'em they must have lived for 2000 years by hiding in a cave.  The other thing is the bursting into flames in sunlight.  Bram Stoker's Dracula didn't have that problem.  At least in the movie The Breed they walked around in the day time, but wore sunglasses.  :)

I thought the glacially slo-mo "death of Boromir" sequence in LOTR set a new record.

Yeah, I was invoking all the telekinetic powers at my disposal to try to shut him up.  After all that for a traitor did Thorondor even get a line?  The poor bird didn't even get union scale for saving the day.  :)

He should have used a different talont agency.

That's a lot of thumb-twiddling time.

My brother worked in DEC support.  He liked to play chess against the computer to pass the time.  But back then there was stuff like CompuServe rather than the web.  Probably not so cheap to post.  Besides, unless he needed an answer to a problem he told me he liked to stay in "read only mode."  :)

^Very nice dancer there. Too bad it's so hard to tell.

40hz rant time! :tellme: :tellme: :tellme:

...

It's true that dance can be very dramatic. But that doesn't make it a drama - which most people who make movies and videos simply can't seem to grasp.

***end rant***

I think they trained at the MTV school of film production.  More important than content is shifting the shot every couple of seconds to force the observer to refocus.  Supposedly this keeps people watching even though nothing good is shown.  The trick is old now.  I wish they'd think up a new gimmick.  :)

Edit:  Fortunately it's not 2015 yet as I've pointed this out at least a dozen times on DC.  New Years res. is to let it and similar rest.  :)

Well, all statistics can be found on the stats page (hidden in the 'Forum Stats' section near the bottom of the forum front-page), where one can also see that 40hz is the number 3 top-poster (right after mouser and renegade) :D

If they have stats on repeating yourself I'm probably at the top.  I tend to hammer the same complaints/observations.  My NY resolution should be to move to new vistas instead of 1360x786.  :)

I like the ones with pics posted, generally.  The ones where misspellings change the sense of the item reminds me of the Tonight Show routine where viewers supposedly submit funny blurbs.  I know Jay Lenno carried it on after Carson.  I haven't watched the new Tonight Show.  But I doubt they throw popular bits away.  :)
