ok let me see if i can't fix it -- if this happens reliably to you then you would be a perfect guinea pig for me to test new versions on if you are willing, since i don't get this behavior.

Fanix have some very good low-level code, if nothing else Hilitext will be a good way to see how well such an operation can be done and how reliably.

Forgive me for quoting myself, but as i get older i need to prove that indeed what i'm losing in terms of speed i'm gaining in terms of wisdom:

my experience has been that you can detect scams on first contact. in the case of your customer, i suspect everything is fine and on the up-and-up, and you're just experiencing the normal uncertainties and delays of business as usual.

The other thing i am learning with regard to using open source programs tools is the hard truth about the difference between theory and practice.

As a programmer, my first instinct when choosing between an open source tool and a closed-source/commercial tool, is to say: Well i should prefer the open source tool, because theoretically if there is a bug or something i need to add, I can code it myself - yay!

In practice however, and this is the thing i am really starting to feel strongly about and really starting to understand the import of, I just don't have the time or energy to learn someone else's code just so i can fix something or add a small feature.

In practice, i'd be much happier being part of a user base that can provide enough financial support to the project so that the developers can spend their time working on and providing support for the project.  In terms of cost-benefit analysis, my time is much better spent coding on my own projects and supporting these developers with a little money.

Firefox is a great example of the best of the open source community, in my opinion.  It shows how amazing a product you can produce if you have a small core of devoted and consistent coders, who can bring a program along to the point at which it develops a strong market share and presence, enough to bring in tons of part-time coders who can contribute their own self-contained extensions. Of course almost no other open source programs ever get anywhere near the level of activity that Firefox.

And very few projects are able to raise money the way mozilla can in order to support the project.

I'm starting to come to the conclusion that there is very little if any *meaningful* difference to me as a user based on whether a program is open source or not.  Far more important to me is how active the developers are.  And in this, I really don't think that knowing a program is open source helps you much.  A huge majority of open source projects are abandoned.  However, when a project is open source it's often easier to get a feel for how active development is.

All things being equal, the advantages to open source are huge in my mind.  But on the other hand -- if my primary concern is active developers, I worry about open source coders not being able to devote the time they might want to on a project because of financial issues, or else not working on the unfun parts of a project because of lack of motivation.

Can open source applications compete? Absolutely.  But for me I have found that when choosing a program for a task, I do not put much weight on whether it's open source or not -- i think other issues are more important.

Yeah, doing this reliably for different kinds of applications may be very difficult.  You might be able to do well on a few specific applications though, and have moderate success in general, but it's going to be a bit painful.

ps. This should probably be in developer's corner.. I'll move it there in a bit.

thats a nice idea.. wouldn't this be a good coding snack -- a program that detects when you are in an editbox or other edit control and launches a configured application when you are?

post it in the coding snacks request section, this seems like something right up skrommel (or some other ahk coder) alley.

deepkent, I don't know why the program isn't being fully downloaded to your computer from our site.

The problem isn't that the program won't install -- the problem seems to be that your computer is not successfully downloading the program.  Let's try Cavalcader's suggestion, let me upload a ZIP version of the program for you and see if that can download successfully:

https://www.donation...nshotCaptorSetup.zip

And i even uploaded it to a different server in case that's the problem you are having:
http://mouser.dcmemb...nshotCaptorSetup.zip

The file should be 8.28mb if complete.

If anyone has any new idea of something they want to do in conjunction with DC, that they are willing to organize, now would be a great time to go for it.. Let me know how *I* can help you !
25216
that's a nice idea about random branches.

i'm afraid that a poor decision was made in the design of this program to organize based on the idea of one long audio file with time points along it that choices get made.

a much simpler approach in terms of designing a game would have been to use a sequence of separate short mp3 files that play to completion.

i should modify it to be able to work like this if there is ever any hope of people using it.

I'm not sure this is exactly worthy of an official DC announcement, but most of you know that (due mostly to my need to pay off school loans) I still have to take side programming jobs sometimes that are unrelated to DC.

Well I've accepted one that is going to keep me very busy for the next 3 months or so, and I probably won't have much time to code on DC stuff other than maintenance issues and bugfixes.

I'll still be around every day on the forum, but just in general I have a feeling these next months are going to find me pretty focused on this other job, so i probably won't be as active.

I think it may actually be a good thing in terms of rejuvenating me for DC -- I have a lot of new ideas that have been percolating and it will be fun to be able to jump back into them after a little mercenary work, and I can't wait to come roaring back with renewed energy.

Now here is where you come in.  I know DC will do fine with me somewhat benched on the sidelines, but I was hoping to ask all of you to go a step further, and chip in together to make it so these next 3 months stand out as a renaissance period for DC, rather than a lull.

We have quite a few coders around here, some that talk and participate regularly, and some that have just been reading but not yet jumped into the pool.

What do you think, are you guys and gals all (coders and non-coders alike) willing to pitch in and make the next three months an example of the best that DC can be?

How can you help?
  • Help me/us think of some new ideas we can do in the next 3 months that you are willing to spearhead and supervise.  No one participates on DC because of money, but one thing I can do for this period is funnel all the site donations into any projects we can come up with, which should give us a thousand dollars a month to spend on fun stuff if you guys can think of a way to spend it.  But please keep in mind that we don't want to get into a situation where people who have been participating for the love of it suddenly feel like now it's all about money.  So let's be careful how we use the money.  We could always just give it to people who have already been helping out the site in the past.  This is kind of delicate.
  • I'd love to get more coders involved writing some new programs during the next few months.  How can we encourage that?  I know i want to do this firefox extension programming "contest" here, which i've been wanting to do for a while.  What else?  What about a programming "contest" related to our Getting Organized 2007 experiment?  I put "competition" in quotes because i like to think of it more like everyone who participates gets a prize, etc., rather than a winner-take-all thing.
  • If you're a programmer, whether it's application programming, web service coding, game making, whatever.  Create something cool and share it on DC!
  • Help keep the DC blog alive by writing original content and finding new software and software-related stories to post about
  • Writing mini-reviews
  • What else?

Anyway, I am asking for your help.  I hope you can help me not feel bad about not coding so much for DC in the next few months, and filling in whatever gap may be left by that absence.  Nothing would make me happier than for people to look back on this time and say wow DC really showed how great a community it is.

Thank you,
-mouser (Jesse)

ps.
I shouldn't even think about posting this without first expressing my indescribable appreciation for all of you who contribute to this site and forum every day and make it the place that it is.  From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

By the way, I still have a couple FARR Plugin Creator Mugs to give away to new plugin writers.
Info on creating a plugin here: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=10105.0

Screenshot Captor also is designed so that any right-click context menu can be used in the left-hand thumbnail sidebar.

So, for example, any of the free context menu extensions that work with the free image hosting sites should work from within Screenshot Captor.

Maybe that has been mentioned before : farr finds but cannot launch a file if it has a space as the last character of its name

 :o

There still seems to be a problem with certain characters and folder names. I'm not 100% sure, but it seems to be related to the "É" character (only?).

could you maybe test if the problem isn't with all UPPERCASE diacriticals? I wonder if it's not a case-related thing.
