General Software Discussion / Re: How to remove Windows.old?
« Last post by Curt on March 04, 2012, 02:54 PM »
Easiest option is to just rename it to basically anything, and then reboot to see if you get any complaints. No complaints = safe to delete.

well, I must admit, you said "easiest" not "safest".

I renamed it, and rebooted, and now it is gone!!!   :(

Why am I not happy? Because it is gone, but still taking up 341GB!!!!!!

-you may very well be right. Because at boot-up I am greeted by Fujitsu, which was the company behind the Vista, but the new Win 7 comes from a Dell disc. So I guess the old Vista still is some kind of command - giving weird situations if I remove Windows.old which must be including Fujitsu stuff.

General Software Discussion / How to remove Windows.old?
« Last post by Curt on March 04, 2012, 02:11 PM »
Restoring my documents from the cloud based backup, I noticed that my new Win 7 was running out of free space many days too soon, so to speak. I knew that the "overwritten" Vista still is around on my PC, because at boot-up I am offered to log in to it, (but it will only give me a black screen and send me on to Win 7), and I knew it is placed in a folder named Windows.old, but only now have I realized it is taking up a whopping 341GB. Not good!!

How can I safely get rid of Vista and Windows.old ?  :tellme:

I hope you didnt lose anything important :-[

Thank you, Tom.

I have lots of backups, I just didn't think in time to also save my Internet links, and a list of installed programs, and a copy of my Flashnote-notes. Inconvenient, but not terrible important. Furthermore, W7 has (of course) overwritten my C-drive, but not my D-drive. So 400 GB were untouched!

I'd like to know why you and Innuendo both feel that Paragons program is to blame when, by your own admission:
a) your system has been unstable for 19+ months;
b) you blindly clicked remove in Revo Uninstaller, (a program which I've managed to trash a system with by not paying attention);
c) you seem to try almost every program available, (no offence meant but it really does look that way).

No offence taken.

I now think to understand that my Vista had errors from the beginning, because I noticed sluggishness the first time I used it. But that was 5 weeks after the purchase, and in Denmark we have 28 days to regret a purchase - so it was too late for a refund. I couldn't imagine that it was Windows that had the error, I was certain it had to be the hardware, so I didn't trust the shop when they said that they would send the machine to someone else to repair the OS software, not the hardware. And when they said I absolutely would lose my files, I refused. Much later I realized they were right, the hardware seems to be fine, so the error must have been within Vista. Anyway, my "unstable" Vista was more like Explorer being slow and fragile, than Vista being unstable.

When I uninstalled a Paragon DEMO trial, I was given my first blue screen of death. It was impossible to fix Vista until I managed to reinstall the demo. My second blue screen was when I asked Revo to remove the Paragon it was monitoring. Don't we all trust Revo? I did, so Paragon had to be blamed. Maybe I should just blame myself and Revo, but the case is that Revo has removed other programs without any problems, so in my head Paragon is the sinner.

Yes, I've tried more than a thousand programs. But I have also spend aeons waiting for (the free) Revo to scan & clean after each program. But of course, there are always traces.

I clearly must have customized my previous Firefox a lot, because I am now sitting with Waterfox, thinking Where is everything?

I don't understand why you can't just hit the default  '/' and start typing,

Okay; I found it in Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)

General Software Discussion / HowTo install prog via cmd prompt?
« Last post by Curt on March 03, 2012, 11:38 AM »
I am unable to enter my Fujitsu Vista. I now have a Dell recovery disc that won't recover anything, and the only option left in the recover options is Command Prompt.

My Vista was ruined because Paragon Hard Manager Pro 2010 [PHM] was removed the wrong way (by Revo), so I am #hoping# that re-installing PHM maybe could make my old PC vistable again, so to speak; make it possible for me to enter Vista for long enough to rescue some data that I didn't think to back up. I am not asking to heal my old Vista, just to be able to enter it and copy some files.

But as I said, the only option that I can find is Command Prompt, which I know nothing about.

Do 'you' think it is possible to enter the old Vista via a command prompt and install PHM from a USB stick, when Vista otherwise is unreachable? And if yes, HOW?

no, it wouldn't install any drivers; "they are not meant for your system".

Command prompt it is, then. But HOW?  :tellme:

Sadly there are not a single person that I know of in my circles that have a retail Vista SP2 disc; Vista, yes, but always from Dell or something, and never SP2. I will have to look around some more, before trying to restore.
-Curt
For what you'd be using it for (a quick login to recover some files) any Vista disc would work. You'd just have some OEM branding throughout the OS and maybe some trialware installed & you could install the lastest SP right away or just get down to business recovering your important files & getting the heck out.

I am now sitting with a DELL Vista Home Premium 32-bits dvd. I have already tried Repair Start, and System Restore; they did nothing. I mean, they tried, but Start wasn't repaired, and there were no restore points found. I have not been able to enter my Vista.

All that is left is Command Prompt, which I am looking at right now, or overwriting the original Vista.

I have this #feeling# that if I could only re-installl that damn Paragon program from a USB stick via command prompts, my old Vista would suddenly work again. Utopia?

HOW should I do? I know nothing about command prompting!
 :tellme:

Edited: First things first:
Can I somehow enter my Vista, via a cmd prompt or otherwise, now that I have this DELL disc?

Edit#2:[/b]
oh, yeah, before this, there is also the option to install drivers if Windows is not recognized. Vista is recognized, but I guess I could try this weird method; Installing Dell laptop drivers on a Fujitsu desktop?

General Software Discussion / Text Accelerator, brand new, $12.45
« Last post by Curt on March 03, 2012, 03:10 AM »
From Yuri Kobet, the maker of fabulous True Launch Bar, now comes "Text Accelerator, Tame Your Text", mostly for coders. Intro-prices from $25 $12.45, genuine lifetime key. Reseller: Avangate.

"Low footprint. Text Accelerator takes about 400 KB of memory when waiting for calls."

http://www.textaccelerator.com/

Text Accelerator
Tame Your Text

What you can do with the Text Accelerator:

■Insert the frequently used text chunks with 1-2 keys strokes into any application.
■Transform the text with simple templates.
■The same hot keys for text operations in all applications.
■Write your own scripts in VBScript or JavaScript to process the text.
■Search the terms in the Internet from any application.
■Format the text with HTML or BB Code tags.
■Convert all applicable characters to HTML entities.
■Insert the dynamic information (like the current date or time).
■And almost everything what the script languages can do with text.
slide0.jpg
How the Text Accelerator Works:

Add the accelerators in the settings. You can assign the hot key directly to the accelerator or combine accelerators into group. If you want call accelerator from the group, you have to press the group hot key and then press the accelerator key. To apply the accelerator, just select the text you want to modify and press the accelerator hot key. If accelerator is created to insert the text chunk, then you don't need to select the text. Text Accelerator gets the text by sending CTRL+C keys combination and inserts the modified text by sending CTRL+V keys combination. Most text editors or text fields support these keys combination to copy/paste text.

Windows 7 is available in six different editions, but only three are widely available at retail.

Win 8 has Windows Anytime Upgrade which was made for you to purchase an upgrade.
More versions, more upgrades.

I have no idea what the explanationto your question might be.
My only advice would be to stop scanning!!!   ;D  :P

Seriously, I NEVER scan my computer. Instead I scan everything coming to my computer.

at checkout they also offer startup manager StartEd Pro (2 Computers) at 64% discount

-when you add all these rules to Windows Firewall Control, doesn't they slow things down so much that Outpost would be (almost) just as quick? My only beef with Outpost Security Suite is the "wait" when I am opening a homepage. Otherwise I don't see it annoyingly slow in any way. But of course, I no longer go places or download stuff that are suspect.

-well, reply #1 tells that I am one. However, it is certainly not the money that I am concerned about, (those 3 Euro have already been refunded), but the backup - at the moment I have no machine to restore to!

No panic, I still  have more than a week ;-)

one for 40hz:

Discworld is a flat disc that rests on the backs of four huge elephants which are in turn standing on the back of an enormous turtle as it slowly swims through space. In the book Small Gods, the question "what does the turtle stand on?" is asked, and gets the reply "It's a turtle, for heaven's sake. It swims. That's what turtles are for."
