General Software Discussion / OpenSCAD is a game changer for 3d printing
« Last post by mouser on April 01, 2018, 02:13 AM »
This is a post about a (free) program called OpenSCAD:
Screenshot - 4_1_2018 , 2_00_50 AM_ver001_thumb001.png

I recently bought a 3d printer.  Mostly just because they've gotten good enough and cheap enough that I woudn't feel too bad if it mostly sat on a shelf.

I've been having quite a bit more fun with it than I expected, mostly because of the amazing site thingiverse.com where people have uploaded thousands of printable things you can just download and print (it's not *quite* that easy yet, there's plenty of tinkering and troubleshooting still required with today's cheap 3d printers).

Mostly I've been printing things to bling out my board games.

But this past week a couple of people teamed up on the DonationCoder forum to help make a model of our site mascot (Cody the Bird), and a customizable base for him to sit on.  You can follow along with that thread here: https://www.donation...ic=45256.0;topicseen

I've tried experimenting with doing 3d design using tools like Blender, and my brain completely shuts down, which is a shame because it would be fun to be able to DESIGN models not just print models that others have made.

Which brings me to the reason I'm posting, OpenSCAD.

OpenSCAD has been a revelation for me.  It's basically a CAD (computer aided drafting) programming language and development environment, which makes it easy for a programmer to design and model 3d objects for printing, using algorithms/code.

It's a joy to use -- you can write programs to create 3d objects and instantly preview and study them and then save them for printing.  And most of the models on thingiverse that are customizable are made with OpenSCAD, which is a great way of getting started.

My mind is swimming with the idea of creating both useful and precise objects, but also useless and mathematically interesting objects...

Here is a video talking about OpenSCAD:

Aryq, I'm having a lot of fun with the coin scad file -- I am making most things proper options instead of hardcoded values.. I will send you my file when I am done.

Update: I'm *loving* OpenSCAD - a programmer's dream cad program.  I've got most of the coin options nicely configurable now so you can more easily change the sizes of different things. I will share soon.

You should try acetone-fuming
I've seen those dedicated alcohol smoothing machines (they require special fillament).

And then we have to figure out what awards to make and who gets them.. It won't cost much to print or ship these, but will take quite a few hours to print each one.  If they are to be painted, much more work involved.
We could offer them as alternatives to NANY mugs.. But maybe their best use would be as special awards for long time dc forum members who have made thousands of posts, or forum moderators.  Or big shot donors :)
They can be customized with username, date of joining, etc, etc..

Heralding a new arrival:
codyherald.jpg

I have to say that the idea of a rod and perching cody above it did not work as well as I had hoped -- he looked a little strange sitting on a pole so I had to put him on a second tier.  Probably more trouble than it's worth, as the look of him just sitting on the coin base still seems best to me.

But i notice a bug when i capture thousand of image and running for the long time.
Can you explain if these instances are just living for a short period -- or are you saying they are stuck and won't exit even if you stop making requests?
If the latter, then that is a bug I need to fix.  If the former, we can think about a better solution.

(Btw have you tried my Automatic Screenshotter instead of minicap?).

quite a few false starts on how to use/set up Easy Screencast Recorder,

In a long history of bad naming decisions, calling this one "Easy" was probably my biggest mistake.  The codec configuration pain really makes it confusing.  A better name would be "Confusing Codecs Screencast Recorder" (CCSR).  I must admit they confuse the hell out of me...

Does ESR have a way to specify/configure additional codecs? i.e the CamStudio lossless one.
Well that's the one thing that ESR *is* good at, letting you choose and configure whatever codec you want to us.

Also, tangential, but setting up the micro-donations thing...PayPal always takes a cut? Even if bypassing them and using the Debit/Credit option instead?

In this world, everyone takes their cut if you pay by credit card..  PayPal isn't so bad though, they don't take that much.. To avoid paypal/middlemen you can always send cash (or cookies) in an envelope to the address listed on the contact page, or bitcoin.  The only problem with bitcoin is that I've never figured out how to cash out, so any bitcoin donations will probably just stay in a virtual wallet forever..

Hi bubbajunk.

Glad that the new region capture improvements are being well received.

Probably better to have the discussion here in a separate thread..
It would be easy to make the cross hair lines solid -- only question is if I need to add yet another annoying option to let user choose dashed or solid lines in region capture mode, if some users prefer the other way.  Let me try adding it and we can see what beta testers prefer.

It will have to be in a week or so though, since I am up to my eyeballs getting stuff ready for the DC fundraiser in April.

Awesome, thanks aryq!

I changed the font in the latest version, from Arial Black to Liberation Mono (DC.com) and Liberation Sans (other text).
Clever! It really made a difference.

I have openscad installed and have played with it a tiny bit.  I think I will need your help making the "rod".

I'm trying to remember what the shadow color does (or did!).. Right now SC is using transparency to do the drop shadow effect.

Aryq, I had a great idea:

What if coming up out of the "coin" in the center was a small diameter rod, perhaps only 4mm diameter, coming up about 2 inches?

This would accomplish a couple of things:
It would elevate cody, for an interesting look.
It would make the rest of the coin top completely visible, so we could use all of the space including the center, for design.
With a hold at the bottom of cody (sorry old chap!) we could easily mount him on it.

With the center visible we might even move the cody with coin design that is on the bottom to the top center, OR use it for some additional (non-curved) text, which could come in handy for some awards..

Aryq:

The new height is better!
The text seems a little better too -- not sure if you did anything with that or it may be that depending on the radius (i printed it at 80% size) it just happens to kern better or worse.

The new center design is better.  If it's easy to do it might be nice to try one where that center is actually quite a bit higher up, to elevate cody a half inch or so.. Might be worth a try..

Also on further thought, I think maybe having the bottom flat with nothing on it might be better for when we use this as a base for the cody figurine and award, because it would allow me to write something personal on the underside with an oil paint pen.  I think that would be preferable to a design, and make the printing easier.
