I have Ctrl+F'ed through the revision histories and "editor" is mentioned rather often - usually the HTML editor though. I'm not on my The Bat! computer here, so I could evaluate it later. Never searched for boxes, honestly.

Soon, they'll want more money from me. The Bat! 9 is around the corner. Sigh!
I *may* have gotten banned from the ritlabs forums permanently for complaining about the editor like 10 years ago!  lol
And guess what...10 years later, STILL THE SAME.  LOLOLOL

honestly, most of the issues comes down to one thing....wrapping.  like, can you just make the editor wrap like a normal window?  maybe a little checkbox to enable/disable?  nope maybe in 20 years.

to the OP...
not sure.  I use syncovery pretty heavily, but mainly with files.  So I haven't tried the onenote syncing....but the program can do it natively (as it is written on the website).
4wd's test seems to confirm that.

syncovery is one of the best programs ive ever used.

@everyone
I know I am not such a frequent user as I used to be, but it always feels good to visit. It's like a home away from home (eeehhhh actually I don't have a home any more, since I became a nomad - Hahaha)

Greetings to @mouser and all the lovely people at Donationcoder - one of the best software communities on the web!
same here!

dc has clearly suffered as social media has taken off in past 10 years.  I know what affected me the most...reddit.  and changes in life.  but this is still the OG home!  much more civilized, we are not trying to get points and stuff so we have more honest discussions here.  mousey got married, ha!  anyway, glad to be back.

Living Room / Re: N.A.N.Y. and the Too Many Projects Phenomenon
« Last post by superboyac on August 13, 2019, 01:20 PM »
As some of you may know, I usually have a dozen unfinished projects in my pipeline. So many ideas, but only such a limited time!

When I started participating in the N.A.N.Y. contests, it motivated me to get some of these projects done instead of just having them float around as a rough TODO list. Now some of these projects take too much time, so I publish them early in the next year. That leads to a certain feeling that I should probably write more code until the end of the year is approaching fast, because it feels wrong to submit projects twice. ;)

Now my increased productivity - or, at least, I hope that's what it is - has an interesting side effect: When I'm working on a project and I am stuck, I start another one for the time being. I usually choose a different toolset for each, so I'm not stuck in the same place in more than one project at a time.

So I am currently trying to finish one COBOL, one Pascal and one Perl project until Dec 31, and I am mostly sure that only the Perl project will be done within the time frame (because it is already "done", I only need to adjust the GUI and tweak the performance before I consider it release-ready). One of the big problems with projects which have no paid deadline is that you just don't care enough anymore...
You must keep the momentum going! Always Finish! It's good for the soul.

TheBat! has some very good features.  One is fundamental to my usage, virtual mailboxes.  This is like the Linkman keyword metaphor. If I have a biz vendor, or a Bible subject, I can make up a virtual box, and all the email related to that subject are there. No matter how good your filtering, you could never achieve the same. Plus you limit many to x number of days, since you want virtual mailboxes to be 10-100 or 200 emails, and not thousands.

Does anybody else have similar, easy to setup virtual folders?  (Virtual mailboxes in TheBat! you usually set up as a follow-up to a search.)

=============

On the other hand, Eudora (with Hermes files) trumps TheBat! in many ways. TheBat! has glitch and annoyance difficulties you rarely (never) see in Eudora.  The Eudora editor is suburb, and its stability is legendary. It is fun to work with.  Pandora is trying to get there too, buts it does not quite have the comfy feel of Eudora. Hermes will be essentially Eudora, very modestly modified, mainly in areas like certificates and TSL encryption.

So I redirect the more important email from TheBat!, to a Runbox POP box, leaving behind legions of forum mail and stuff unidentified.  I pick it up with Eudora POP download.  I can handle the redundancy, as I generally work out of TheBat! but like having the leaner Eudora mirror.

Ironically, TheBat! redirect filter has a glitch, or I do not understand something, and it redirects too much, when I do not want it too, so I just put that question on  TheBat! forum.

==============

TheBat! has a long history, I think they do some improvement, my kvetch is that they do not search out and fix many petty annoyances. I put that concern on their forum where they were discussing what we want in the new v. 9. (I am on 7.)  I would rather have the dozen or so petty annoyances (including memory errors that you have to click away in certain areas) than add new features. Annoyances show up in areas like color groups, row layout types, and duplication of email boxes in folders, and more. None of them really crimp operations, but they will give a cheezy feel to a purist.

===============
i agree 100% with all you said.  your dual email client usage is pretty interesting.  The editor in the Bat really is quite weird given that were in 2019.  I thought it was weird in 2009!  And guess what....NOTHING has changed lol.  10 years of updates and no changes to the editor, the primary place you spend most of your time.  But the program is solid and there really are no good alternatives.

I'll start poking around eudora.  I used it pretty heavily back in the 90s.  It was a great program.
258
why would you use Eudora and the Bat?  I imagine you might be doing different accounts on each.

Eudora was the first email client i ever used, i think i've written about it here.  In the 90s.  Good program.  then I moved to Pegasus.  And then about 10 years or so, mouser convinced me to use the Bat, and ive been on the bat since.

the Bat is good, very reliable.  But they are stingy on features and will likely NEVER fix or address things that are bothering you.  They have made lik all these major versions over the years with almost no noticeable change.

I've also spent some time with emClient, which is a good outlook-type replacement, but I would not replace outlook with it, no real point.  It has some slick features though.  I use it specifically to manage my cardav sync with my phone etc.  why?  because it wont degrade your contact photos.   if you let android or ios or outlook manage ANY contacts, all your high-res contact photos will become potato quality.  even emclient can only do about 600-700 pixels max.  btw, the bat's contact features are SH!T.  like cmon.  i am so worried one day the bat is just going to go extinct and that will be it for the poweruser email experience.

Living Room / Re: For those with a CrashPlan...

when you say non-hosted...you want a cloud service right?

No, what I meant was, I don't need a hosting service if I just use software to backup to my own NAS device in another room.

I still think it's important to have an online offsite backup service these days, but I don't need versioning on that, so a simpler solution would be possible.
I'd recommend syncovery with versioning options enabled.  For files.
For images, I suggest Terabyte Image for Windows, or Macrium Reflect.

Another thought: I have a NAS now (synology); do people have recommendations for a non-hosted VERSIONED backup system that would backup to my local network nas?
didnt i learn my backup methods from YOU??!!

when you say non-hosted...you want a cloud service right?  i have no idea what to use, i dont do it.  i do use backblaze so you can do the versioning locally and backup to backblaze.  but sounds like you want the full service.  not sure, am interested.

if you dont want to pay, yes, you can use the free online web outlook.com, and that will work totally fine.  That's what i do.  If you want, you can pay like $6/month for office 365 and that will get you the desktop app.  but you're right, no need to pay just for the ability to enter through the desktop.  you can still enter directly through the web and phone.

yes, mlo is heavily task stuff, no calendar.

protopage looks cool.  ill have to play around with it.

you are doing contacts in the bat??!  wow.  i cant stand the bat's contact module.  best of luck!  i actually manage my contacts with my on radicale server and emclient.  why emclient?  ill tell you...its the only way i found where i could sync contacts to my phone and elsewhere WITHOUT losing quality on the contact photos.  this has been a painful setup also.  why do i do this?  if you let google/android do your contact syncing, as soon as it syncs, all your nice contact photos will be lowered in resolution to something like 200x200pixels.  if you do what i do, you will be able to keep about 700x700 or around there.  i bet all of you who have contact photos have them crazy pixelated and horrible quality (unless you use ios then it may be ok).  AND to make the syncing work on the phone, i use a third party sync called ContactSync, another powerful hard-to-configure app.  i got through ALL this to keep high quality contact photos on my phone.  ridiculous.

I'll answer your original question in detail here:

BASIC CALENDAR "OVERLAY" NEED

Talking about single person calendars.
Yet multi sub-categories, like this:

Internet-Radio-TV
Christian Conferences
Financial
Auto
Business
Local Events

Input through Windows mostly.

-Steven Avery (April 03, 2019, 08:15 AM)
If you are going to input through windows, i highly recommend inputting directly through outlook.  Full paid-for outlook on windows desktop.  Why?  things like recurrence work better on outlook (especially something that has no end date).  Outlook can do multiple calendars, and multiple categories...both will allow you to color it independently.  What's the difference?  Not much, really.  Depends if you want one calendar, multiple categories....or multiple calendars, one category.  I suggest multiple calendars, forget categories...why?  because the colors you choose for the categories will not transfer to different apps (like android or ios), but you will usually be able to custom color each individual calendar.  also, you dont have to worry to choose a category when entering a task...just pick the calendar you want.

EXTRAS

Possible +, not fundamental

shows on iPad  (ok, Android too)
groups of people, good for BIZ - (Zoho has that)
integration with email, task, notes etc. (not that important for me, since I am Rightnote and Eudora/TheBat! oriented)

A calendar entry is quick enough to enter. the 3-second saving from a Gmail is not important, since you always tweak them anyway.
-Steven Avery (April 03, 2019, 08:15 AM)
any outlook calendar will show up on ipad or android or mobile.
contacts management is a different issue and headache altogether.  i can post more later, and i also have several good posts here over the years regarding contacts.
integration...i use the bat also.  and rightnote (although i have now moved to onenote almost exclusively).  for contacts, i have my own cardav server....the bat cannot sync with it, it has issues.  i dont think the bat has good contact/calendar syncing features.  it doesnt even have a real calendar.
rightnote has good features, but difficult to make part of this workflow.  you must be doing something very specific.

your OVERLAY requirement...
If what you mean is multiple categories/calendars showing on one display with different colors etc.,  I'd stick to outlook.  Use multiple calendars.

ultimately...i would get something like calendarscope or other 3rd party software (like i used to), but only outlook's features are reliable for me, so i use it alone now, and just apps on phones.  I VIEW my tasks on outlook on the pc, and on Digical on the phone.  Alarms would be something you setup on the phone and should be independent of the app.  Outlook or most calendar apps dont have specific ALARM functions....if that's important you probably want yet another 3rd-party pc software or app to do that.  That should be fairly easy to find I think.

I'd stay away from committing to suites like EssentialPIM or something.  Think about syncing.  Facebook events are terrible and will have many many problems syncing with things.  It's all been a frustrating experience for something so common, old....i've been doing this for so long.  For years, the big three google apple facebook kept fighting and pulling their sync tools away from each other and now none work all that well unless you pay for extra services.

there is one tool i am looking into committing too once again, Mylifeorganized.  It has a nice workflow and can do a lot.  Not really a true calendar software as it has no calendar view, but has some very interesting features to organizing tasks and integrations.
263
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking regarding alarms and tablets...but if its Android, the app i use for alarms is called "Alarm Clock Xtreme".

Your vueminder license will probably not work, unless you got the lifetime option at some point.

I would probably choose calendarscope if it were me.  Its the best looking and extremely lightweight.  BUT...i dont like their licensing policy and all these additional things like syncing you have to buy...all these you have to renew every year.  And like you said, just to make it look good?  I don't think its really worth it...it would be like $100 a year.  and it might not be so seamless either...for example, outlook doesn't have many colors to choose from for stuff in their calendar items.  but vueminder, calendarscope have any color combo you want.  how do those colors sync?  they don't.  so whatever app you use on your phone will show different colors than your computer, and outlook will show different colors altogether.  and outlook colors "categories" whereas these other programs can do more than just categories.  but again, how do they sync across pc/web/phone?  they do not.

so that's why, after over a decade of trying calendar software out, now i'm just entering them in outlook straight.  i dont mess around too much with colors.  i use "digical" on my phone and the colors are all different on phone, pc, web, etc.  i dont care anymore, i cannot control it, and its not worth it.
264
totally with you steven.

I have gone round and round with calendar software over the years (and contact management too, but i'll leave that out for now).  Here are my results...

syncing:  this is the heart of any calendar decision as i have multiple devices (android, windows, web) and they gotta work good together.  so, there was a facebook calendar that i tried to sync with all my other calendars, and it turned out to be literally impossible.  none of the big companies are cooperating with each other as far as syncing.  facebook, google, outlook, apple...good luck syncing with them all seamlessly.  I gave up on facebook...they are SHIT for trying to work with other programs.  i dont care what ANY of the tutorials or links out there say.  there is NO WAY.  go ahead and try.  i spend i wont even say how long looking and trying to make things work.

then, i eventually just realized this.  outlook has the best calendar features.  no other program will do it.  whatever it is, you will eventually see that calendar functions in outlook just are better than other software or companies.  so you say you dont want a two-step middleman process, but if you want syncing, i would say go with outlook.  i use a free account on the web literally just for calendar syncing.  i enter calendar details through desktop outlook or mobile usually.  one of the things to pay attention to is notifications/reminder features and recurrence features.  other programs will screw this up, not outlook.

you can also setup your own calendar like a radicale etc.  (I have done this).  problem is, none of the self-hosted solutions are very nice.  they are difficult to setup (speaking from a non-programmer windows user).  again, i have LOTS of notes on all this.  so using a free outlook account is still the best for me as far as calendars.

there are a couple of standalone calendar software i have somewhat high praise for.  Vueminder, and Calendarscope.  i hate calendarscope license policy, it will be expensive in the long run, and vueminder is somewhat bulky but pretty nice.  THE PROBLEM is the entry of items...it still is best to do it in outlook for more reasons than im willing to write right now.  but VIEWING the items on windows is infinitely better on these two programs.  calendarscope is very lightweight and just beautiful interface.  vueminder is a bulky bloated app, also pretty beautiful.

then i found another free thing that would overlay calendars with colors on the desktop wallpaper.  that was nice, but not as useful as i thought.

then there's mobile/android stuff.  i currenlty use digical.  not perfect, but best ive found so far.  the mobile experience is tolerable at best to me.  as long as things sync im ok, and if i can enter things nicely.  but nitpicking the beauty or the intricate functionality of it...not great...i have so many suggestions.

linkman!  i remember right here on dc transitioning from powermarks to linkman.  yes linkman is a godsend to those like me who were obsessed with powermarks.  so linkman is still chugging along?  seems like it was last updated in 2017...still...not bad, looks like it is working and the developer is still active.
266
probably unrelated....
i had a hard time getting network computers to show up on a win10 machine recently.  problem turned out that windows now disables smb so you dont see network computers in the network neighborhood.  but if you type the address directly or the ip it still works.  so sounds different than your problem.  it was also reported as being a win10 problem.

haha!  yea.  My life has taken some drastic turns the last 5 years.  I hope it's for the best, and it's not something I look forward to repeating.

Perhaps you might understand...it's somewhat difficult acknowledging this obsession with software, analysis, information.  I love it, it's not a bad thing, but it is a bit alienating.

I'm going to stay with wiznote with encrypted notes. Pity because I use a wacom tablet instead of a mouse, and onenote is very good at this kind of pen notes. But everything else is weaker in onenote.
thought id check in here....saw this...

You think wiznote is better than onenote?  interesting!  I used wiznote pretty heavily for about a year, and then they went subscriptions model.  I then started using onenote, with some advice and tips from somebody here (i forget the username, but he is the man with onenote), and now onenote has been my go to for a while.  What does wiznote do better now?

I have a very solid foundation for building android apps now, ESPECIALLY ones with complicated collections of items.

I'd love to find some contract work to develop android apps -- so if anyone wants to hire me to create a serious android app for their business, don't hesitate to drop me a line.
will do!

Living Room / Re: Android - Observations from Long Term Use
« Last post by superboyac on May 04, 2016, 01:42 PM »
i've messed around on android quite a bit and keep coming back to this Rom called Dirty Unicorn.  If you use their stable release, it is quite solid.  even compared to a stock rom, I've noticed it does things just a little better, faster, cleaner.  i'm not a hardcore expert on this stuff, you can go to the extreme and use combos of roms and kernels...but the most annoying part is when it comes to updates.  updating will either break stuff, or the process will be long and tiresome.  what i like about DU is they remove the unnecessary stuff from the stock, which a lot of other roms do also.  But they seem to do a better job as far as stability.
It's still not always easy to do a ROM update, but the stable versions last a good long time.  I prefer using DU over stock, and i prefer it over any advantage of other rom/kernels because of the reliability.  best bang for the buck in my opinion.

to try to answer some of wraith's comments:
if i were choosing a new phone, i'd do it based on the rom i want to run.  I prefer DU, so I make sure the phone can run that.  It runs on most rootable phones, so that should be no problem.
i used to care about the sdcard, removeable battery stuff.  not so much anymore.  i feel like the phone's life will be over by the time you really need to consider expanding storage or removing the battery.  but if you need that stuff, probably the samsungs are the best bet.  if you don't care about that stuff, then i'd go with the nexus line.
battery life...not much you can do about that.  android devices should last a day.  i'm impressed with the new iphones and how long they can go.  i don't think most androids can last as long as iphones, but there are so many models it's hard to say.

regarding updating and the os slowing down over time...this is not always true.  but it depends on what is happening.  if you are using official channels and non-rooted phones, this is more likley to happen.  if you stick to a rom like DU, it will never happen.  i have some old nexus phones that are more responsive than the latest quad core stuff now because of the du rom.  i hate samsung's OS stuff, i would root and remove it immediately.  Samsung's also suffer from weird wifi problems and other odd things...but this is what I've seen on stock samsung phones.  I think if you use custom roms, they go away.  if you get an android phone, i strongly suggest NOT using any official channels for updates and stuff.  don't rely on samsung, or google, or att, or anything.  do it yourself.  they will mess up for sure somewhere during the life of your phone.  that's the headache of android and the fragmented universe.

if you don't want to customize at all, don't get android.  get iphone or windows phone.  if you can get by without ANY customization...not too many extra apps, no keyboard tweaks, no theming, no rooting, the windows phone is actually rock solid.  it will not crash or break and will remain smooth till the end.  updates will be headache free, even more so than apple.  but again, the only limitation there is that you can't really do much extra things.
