Living Room / Re: Any lawyers here?
« Last post by holt on October 19, 2016, 12:55 AM »
I'm not a lawyer, but this is a traditionally time-worn subject for which some of the more well-known protagonists are weather forecasters, and either farmers or fishermen, for whom accurate forecasts are of great importance.
I already was aware of this, but realized I did not know the answer to the question of legal liability, and your post made me curious.
Here is an answer, of sorts; Someone to Blame: Legal Liability for Weather Forecasts.
BTW, purely FYI, a female newscaster who gives the weather report or forecast is a 'weather bunny', as shown here; Wanda The Weather Bunny" (Commercial, 1971). 8)

true story - I never use that lame word 'belated' on a greeting card; instead, I just add the following byline; This card isn't late, it's super early for next year. :)

Okay, here's a film-noir joke; Why did the gentleman name his daughter 'Ginger'? Answer; Because he had an evil sister named 'Nausea', and Ginger stops Nausea.  8)

So they have a program running continually to check for updates and they put an icon for it on your task bar that does nothing other than take up space?  How irritating.
Actually it's quite useful; it runs continually to let you know a program is running continually, and to warn you that it can't tell you what the program is.  ;)

edit: Ah well, I guess it's not that funny; now if only I could figure out how to switch it off and prevent it starting; I'll have to poke around and see what can be figured out.

ProcessExplorer found it on the first try.
In the words of Private Hudson in Aliens 2, "Stop your grinnin' and drop ya linen! I found them!"
The mystery icon is Glary Utilities CheckUpdate.exe, the bottom line in the attached pic.
A mere "Thanks, and--well done," is not enough.

I'll see what I can find out. BTW, I vaguely recall a great program; you could put it in sort of a 'hunter-killer' mode, a crosshairs appears, and it would ID anything in Desktop you hover it over, and ask if you want to kill it. I can't remember what it was; I seem to recall that it had a freeware version.

Now there's two of them; I'm running Win XP Home 32bit; I'll try everyones' advice and see what turns up; I ran several different spyware scans and nothing came of it yet.
edit: one just disappeared again.

Can someone plz tell me what program this blue icon represents (under red arrow)? It showed up recently, and hovering my cursor over it or clicking right or left mouse button produces no reaction.

According to my device manager, my HD drive is a wd400bb-22jhc0.
Looks like it's a EIDE non-SSD (not sure).
My dead laptop should have a good 100gb EIDE SSD HD in 2.5" size; I think all I need is two 2.5" HD bay adapters; it should speed things up a little, keeping the original as backup.

Can't buy it yet, but I looked at your ethernet card link, and bookmarked it for future reference as the ideal choice.

With a PaleMoon YT downloader add-on, and the patience to wait for a full download to be completed first, I am getting good playback using my VLC player.

My ethernet card is 10/100 (I forget where I saw that).
Using TOR, my video is barely adequate on youtube at the 240 setting.
I see ethernet cards on amazon that are rated 10/100/1000, and wonder if I should upgrade?
I would want a good economical choice, and there are so many to choose from;

In 'Advanced System Settings' you can set the minimum and maximum of storage space you want to reserve for paging. That is usually meant by 'Virtual memory'. This Microsoft kb article explains exactly what you must do to get rid of this error message.

A general tip, in case you didn't know: When you see a window appear with an error or warning message, make sure you have that window "active" and press key combination: CTRL + C. This copies the complete content from that window into the Windows clipboard. This works with any error message window. Use that content with google/bing/duckduckgo/whatever and chances are you'll find the answer for your error in the first 5 links of the search engine results.
Tnx, I set it to 'system managed size'; hope that's alright.

In Windows XP on a Pentium 4 with 2gb ram, I keep getting a pop-up mssg 'Windows - the virtual memory minimum is set too low'. How would I determine a better setting, and is there an online guide for resetting this?

Tnx, I already downloaded service pack3 from major geeks, then ran a 45-part and 83-part update series of updates without a hitch, then successfully installed my Norton antiV.
So the laptop EIDE HD connector should match the desktop cable?
I wonder if my 10/100 ethernet card could be replaced with a faster one from another dead newer desktop.
The mobo is a SiS-661GX, with a celeron 2.66GHz; could the cpu be upgraded?

nightmare time. purchased Norton antiV from amazon with 'no refund' option. norton says my win xp home 'incompatible' w/o service pack 3. i don't see where to check if i have service pack 3 or how to find and install it.

i have a fully functional win 7 pro 32bit on a good HD in a dead pc desktop. can i just pop it into this older desktop and get it to work?

Tnx. I'm using an old desktop celeron; works good with 2gb ram.
The Avira link download failed to open; maybe because I'm using Windows XP. I'll try the oldapps version;

My Gateway TA6 laptop died a month ago, and I'm finally up again with an old Celeron and Windows XP Home which I just upgraded with 2GB RAM.
McAfee antiV refuses to let me transfer their product; can anyone please recommend a good free antiV?

The JavaRa crew now say that there's no longer a need for the software as the Oracle Java installer does a thorough job of removing older versions. On my own systems I have found this to be true.
-cranioscopical (August 01, 2016, 08:35 AM)

+1.  I just updated today and the installer found both the 64 and 32 bit obsolete versions and removed them.
Tnx! Problem solved. :)

Living Room / Re: Movies you've seen lately

I had a rather unique experience the other night, when I happened to find what I thought to be a perfectly 'normal' youtube copy of '13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi'; here. As the movie progressed, I discovered it had been mirror-reversed, which was fine with me. Then it dawned on me that everyone sounded hyper. The effect was so pronounced and yet at the same time so subtle, that it took me perhaps half the movie, maybe more, listening to everyone talk like caffeine addicts, to finally realize the film's playback had been sped up just a little bit. The men did not quite sound like they had inhaled helium, but the effect was eerily suggestive of it. The weird thing about it is, the speed-up is just enough so you notice it on a subliminal level, yet still close enough to normal speed as to fool your brain into accepting it as 'natural'.

Since the latest java update, my video is slightly screwy sometimes. How should I roll back to the last version? I see in Add or Remove Programs, three Java entries; Java 8 Update 101, 73, and 77. I have Windows XP. Tnx.
