This section goes for some quick posts without a big writeup:

The web version doesn't seem to work though. I had to download the Windows version.

Here we go!

Less revved up this time, but I feel a tradition I have to poke my way at least a little around the LD's.

First up is one that's gonna be darn tough to beat in the Mood dept.

Salvie GirlDraw1.png

The thing is, it's a fairly simple "tree decision" adventure, and it makes or breaks if there's actually a way out.

I poked at it, but I wasn't up to trying to grind it out. And I don't know the mood here, if people want "spoilers" or to do it themselves. Maybe if someone finds a win ending, they could use that spoiler tag we have here.

Okay, here we go:

- Add pages -- yes
- Delete pages -- Pro, but I think you can get clever and do "extract" the inverse pages and re-save.
- Rotate pages -- Yes
- Crop Pages -- Pro
- Add Text --Yes (But you said TEXT, so that seems free, but adding shapes and lines etc is Pro)
- Eraser -- Sorta; You erase text with the "Add Text" tool but hit backspace. But I think erasing shapes etc is Pro.
- Add Comments -- I don't see this even for Pro though I think I might ask the developers about it. Looks like you can see/etc other people's existing comments though. And it adds Stickies so I'm not sure the diff between stickies and Comments

- Add Stamps -- Look at Digital Signing - Timestamps? Sign Document? Certify? But all that is Pro
- Encryption -- This might be the same as File/Doc Properties/Password Security and stuff
- Insert Images -- Pro
- OCR -- Actually seems to be there! But my particular machine crashes the prog with an error but I have a quirky ailing copy of XP, so you should try it.

And the complete chart comparison is here:
http://tracker-softw...cts-comparison-chart

So, does that help?

General Software Discussion / Re: So, what pdf reader app is your fav?
« Last post by TaoPhoenix on September 02, 2015, 06:40 AM »
Looping this thread into the other one, PDF Exchange Editor seems to me to be the ones to beat now. And I'm about to do a thread on the "best of Freemium" where the free version is *really solid*, and then if the Pro version has any stunning "killer app" extras.

I'm using Motion12's list as a big test after doing a nice multi part crop-merge myself as a proof of concept. I took a medical document, and did "extract pages 1-3,18-20 and save as a single file" perfectly.

This is where "speed" becomes to me absolutely silly of a criterion. If I am gonna end up with a PDF at all, I wanna then get some work done. 2 seconds faster loading isn't worth wasting my time on a viewer.

256
I am mainly looking for the following functions:
- Add pages
- Delete pages
- Rotate pages
- Crop Pages
- Add Text
- Eraser
- Add Comments
- Add Stamps
- Encryption
- Insert Images
- OCR (I know this one is really pushing it)

I was also thinking of going around PDF's limitations and first convert it to TIFF and use a multi-page TIFF editor but couldn't find anything suitable for this task as well.

TIA

Motion12, I'm gonna say give PDF Exchange Editor Free a hard look. Just to keep your original question alive, I'm speed-posting this. A couple of your features may not be there, , but it's gonna be close.
257
Turns out Anand, that PDF Rider really is too cut down to be useful.

From another thread, I went for PDF Exchange Editor Free and I believe it just takes all the cakes home.
I just did a multi page cut from a document, something like pages 1-3,18-20 + save as one document!

Now I'm investigating if their demo Pro advanced features are worth about $43 to upgrade.

But even in Free, they're the ones to beat and darn close to what the other guy was looking for. I consider the best of Freemium to be when the free version is *really solid*, and lets you just get work done, and then Pro has some one or more absolutely stunning features. PDF Exchange looks really close to that model because as I remarked in a couple of threads, notice for ex PDF Rider has no viewer, so you can't see what you're chopping, and it can't do anything near as fancy as the multi page edit I just did.

And if there IS a killer app feature, $43 is way better than Adobe's multi hundred price tag!!

Done!

Works for me! I actually don't even look at the lower boards much!
259
From the website http://pdfrider.codeplex.com/

PDF Rider is made upon the utility pdftk and can be used to:

* Merge PDF documents
* Insert pages from another pdf file
* Extract pages from a PDF document to a new document
* Delete pages
* Rotate pages
* Crypt and Decrypt a pdf file
* Burst a document into single pages

You have to check if it works as per your requirement.

Regards,

Anand

Heh I'm up against a self imposed time clock today, but that sounds really close to what I need, so I gotta test it and report back! In many ways those are "basic" features but it always bothered me that readers felt "crippled" !
260
Not one but you can achive these by using two or three free alternatives.
PDF XChange for editing, stamping, text etc.
PDF Rider for add, delete pages etc.

Regards,

Anand

This is the first I've heard of PDF Rider, so that's interesting. I haven't done much with PDFs in a while, but that was usually what I was doing most of. So I'll have to check that one out. Merging and Splitting pages is my other killer app use, so Anand do you know if PDF rider does that? (Plus it will just be interesting to see how it behaves with Dexpot.)

The links should be changing colors as you visit them, but:
  • The color difference is subtle.
  • You may have to hit F5 to reload the css on the page to see the changes.

I see it on IE8 but not on Pale Moon or FF Dev Edition.

dont know if it's been changed since - but it's working here in PaleMoon

Well, still not for me. But then it's not a big deal for me and I'm not above it being another quirk of my system. (Ask Skwire! )  But I'd think I can't be the only one it's not doing that for, maybe it's some combo of turning off history or something with the AwesomeBar or who knows what else.

Hallo.

You had a similar thread here from March:
https://www.donation....msg377570#msg377570
(Though as I look at that now, that one was about images).

So to rephrase the question, you're looking for "a free alternative to Acrobat"?

That's correct.  Any ideas?

Sorry, no, but it's also a bit odd in that for example a few companies do Browsers, but few/ no-one is doing free super-featured PDF editors. It's probably tough work, but I'm also betting Adobe has locked up certain features into patents that other people can't do without big agreements. Sorta like a "protect our monopoly" type move.

As someone on the outside looking in, I don't see why they didn't revert to that.  Tell people the ramifications, and see how many takers they had.  Refund the nays, Fund the yays.

That's the thing with these crowdfunded things a lot, they sorta control their communications like they are big biz's. It's a bit like a Hold'em poker hand with a couple cards missing. I'm disturbed they couldn't get the DRM code from any one of the other people who got it right.

So there feels like a missing backstory going on here.

They are talking about the "Active Topics" list on the bottom of the main forum page (board index page): https://www.donationcoder.com/forum

Is it working as it should for everyone now? If not, how so?

Well, someone was saying the links should change color if you read them, except they don't at least in my case.

What is this "Info Center"?

I forget if it had a different name last week, but I've called it the "thread aggregator". It's that box at the bottom of the main forum page that collects the top ten *different threads* and bumps them up to the top in the order a post hits (and pretty fast, within seconds.)

Mouser was surprised because he had his own ways of doing things and "just put it there whenever he did it way back", and had no idea how useful it was. To me it's a perfect compromise of exactly the right info density because it's *threads* and not *posts* so let's say this Forum Upgraded thread has lots of stuff going on, it only occupies one slot and for example I can see instantly that if I aka Tao posted earlier, and now it's bumped with Wraith, well, hey, go look!

But for example the Animal Threads thread hasn't done anything since 1AM so if you already looked there, you know you're up to date. And because it's *different* threads, it's kinda rare that *eleven or more* threads get hit and you "might risk missing something".

(It's also why I ignore Mouserbot in the chat, because you just park a tab there on the front page and watch something to get bumped, so I for one don't need extra lines "cluttering" my chat  flow.)

And Mouser has suggested an alternate page with even more stuff, but somehow that extra page "blows my info capacity fuse" and I can't look at it often.

Another more general point: the first thing I do when I visit the forum is scroll down to the very bottom to see what's latest in the "Info Center - Active Topics" section. I don't know how many other forum users do that, but if a lot or most of them, then from a usability point of view it might be better to have that section at the very top, so there is no need for all that scrolling. Just a suggestion.

You are the 2nd person who has told me that's how you read the forum. I had no idea people did this.

The first things I do on login in is look at the bottom of the home page to see the recent Active Topics

That makes 3 of us now...  ;)

me too.

Blame me for starting this whole wagon train!

I can't recognize the links that I've read from the ones I haven't read; On old DC the link-color changed after visiting he link, but on DC2 the link color stays exactly the same  This may be due to the color-scheme in the theme, I can't tell, but it is a nuisance

ah thanks for pointing that out.
i have attempted to fix it -- let me know if i did ok.  you may have to F5 on a page to get it to load the new css file.  The color difference between visited and non-visited links is subtle, but it's there.

I really don't think it is, not always. So it's not clear under what circumstances it isn't. I'm on Pale Moon and not exactly what all security settings I have going on, if some of those matter etc.

The irony here is wondering if we have any newly converted necrophiliacs... :P

Well, also, if you have a new wrinkle to add, I for one get into a bit of "ooh new shiny" and have no idea some older threads exist. So then someone (legit, non-spam) necro's it, and I go "ooh! That's a thing?"

I've done it a couple of times, notably with the Getting Things Done thread because sometimes we speculate and then it becomes a time capsule "how did that work (or not) for you?"

From App last night comes this sandwich:
Fresh Baked Turkey (that her local store makes daily), fresh baked roast beef, low salt ham, no salt swiss cheese on a whole wheat roll with romaine lettuce, tomato, onion, and ranch dressing.

My alt version will skip the tomato and onion, and I haven't decided on the bread but it might just be one of the healthy breads and (even since I don't need it yet but an experiment) one of the diabetic breads.

I've modified the Image button to explain better how to use the inline attachment feature, and removed the button from the Quick Reply bbc editor, since there is no way to attach files from the quick reply editor.
As has been discussed above, my intent for this button is largely to serve as help for those who don't yet know how our inline attached images work -- and therefore it is mainly about explaining to the user how to attach an image and refer to it.
As deozaan pointed out above, if you want to quickly insert an inline image you can use the new button down by the Attach Choose File buttons.  So there are solutions both for newbies and advanced users.

Sorry, at least for me, it's just not enough!
It took me ten minutes to create this post in the basement comparable to the older system. (And even then there could be a couple of tweaks I'm sure!)

https://www.donation....msg387977#msg387977

I had to make my own sig to remind me of the syntax and even then the order of the images kept getting scrambled, or the bottom of the post, or stuff.

Is there any way I can hide the social media buttons and the translate drop down box at the bottom of each page? I don't need them and they bother me.

If you go to the Forum Profile page of your profile, you will now see a new "Custom options:" item.  I will now use that for supporting miscelaneous advanced/custom options.  If you put -nosocial in that box, it will no longer add the social bookmarking items to your forum pages, or google analytitcs code, protecting you from any privacy concerns.  Translate box still shows because it is completely harmless.

Nice! I just did this! I was "tolerating" them but I'm so not into those services and I've been a bit dismayed at how everyone is doing stuff even more (not here) like "Log into ___ from your Facebook account".
Uh ... if you want to join a forum, you ... register, right? But the Zuckerberg Empire seems to be building Web 3.11 (or something!)

274
Ok, so a couple of thoughts:
...
ACTUALLY: You know i'm thinking that this option is maybe just worded poorly -- the default option may mean to send emails on all replies *AND* "Moderation only if i started topic" -- which would mean that the default IS a reasonable default setting.  That is, the default should be sending you notifications on new replies, as i understand it.

If so, it *really* is poor wording! I can't recall any/many topics that have been moderated, but I've been mildly annoyed at getting emails that replies are in threads, so I turned this off. I am watching the board enough every day if a new reply came through, those "thread aggregator" options will show me.
