Found Deals and Discounts / Re: BugBopper-5.00 USD Instead 19.00
« Last post by sajman99 on July 24, 2010, 07:44 PM »
Hi ha14. I assume this software isn't yours. Have you used BugBopper? It's a cloud scanner which uploads files for analysis? :tellme:

They use some entertaining terminology with this new malware scanner. Wuzzup? ;)

This could prove to be a good anti-malware tool, but I don't think they should claim "BugBopper will detect all malware files". Sure there's some self-promotion (ie. marketing) inherent in that statement, but such a lofty claim seems ill-advised.

@nudone: here's a software (currently in beta) named Gunners File Type Editor.

Take note I've no idea if this is a reliable extensions manager (ie. this mention is not a recommendation) as I haven't had a need for such software.  In other words, don't blame the messenger if it's another dud. ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: UltraSearch: a competitor to Everything?
« Last post by sajman99 on July 23, 2010, 03:39 PM »
:) ultra-minimal perhaps?

Exactly, it really needs (at least a few) settings to challenge Everything. For example, I would like the option to find folder names as well as file names.

If the development continues, I can see keeping UltraSearch because its speed is certainly impressive.

The portable app DesktopOK reportedly works on multi-screen/virtual desktop setups.

Worth a shot as it's a useful little tool.

General Software Discussion / Re: Anyone familiar with Oops!Backup?
« Last post by sajman99 on July 22, 2010, 03:57 PM »
What a terrible name for a backup program! ;D Somehow the serious task of "backing up" & Oops just doesn't match. I can't believe there was a marketing meeting where they actually picked that name. I would love to know the other names that Oops beat out. I'm guessing Oops narrowly surpassed Sometimes Works Backup. :P

It's kinda like if I'm getting a haircut and the barber utters Oops--not a good vibe at all.  :)

Thankfully Everything works flawlessly on my system so I took a pass on UltraSearch.

btw the JAM Software developer seems pretty talented to this non-coder. I also use the freeware TreeSize Free.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: 50% off SyncBackPro until July 28th

Hi tranglos. I was hoping some experienced SyncBack user could answer your question because I unfortunately do not know the answer. :-[

I would be interested to know if 2BrightSparks would respond to such an email and/or community forum inquiry. As a prospective customer, I am curious about the quality of 2BrightSparks' customer support. Anyone know?

I have installed the latest version of Imagina to give it another go. It's not as fast as Fast Picture Viewer, but neither is it as heavy as some viewers like Pictomio. Imagina just looks so sweet I *must* keep it (though I haven't set file associations).

Gizmo's now has comments regarding Imagina including...
...Its absolutely outstanding features have captivated me. User experience is excellent and no other viewer I've seen shows that image quality or that zoom and pan smoothness. Both 2-D and 3-D graphics are amazing and even videos can be watched in this environment (with zooming and panning!)...

Check out Gizmo's informative site for the full comments. No doubt there's room for improvement, but unless you're a professional photographer Imagina at least deserves a look.

There has been a response from 2BrightSparks regarding the license. In the Raymond.cc comments Richard Gascoigne has commented...
...We have not previously charged for upgrades, but there will probably be a small fee for the next SyncBackPro major version (v6), for those who want to take it up.

Hmm..apparently a change of policy. Still seems fair for quality software...depending on what a "small fee" actually means. :-\

The Raymond.cc blog author has contacted 2BrightSparks regarding the terms of the license. No response so far.

btw some folks have reported the coupon code also works with SyncBackSE (50% of $30 = $15).

Good question, Curt. The Raymond.cc author indicates in the comments section that he thinks the license includes free lifetime upgrades.

Dunno personally--I haven't yet explored the offer.

Thanks for telling-- the GUI on this one looks pretty good.

However, the challenge they face (and likely the reason for the hefty discount) is that there are a number of free tools which can provide the same information.

I recently discovered two shows on the History channel: Pawn Stars and American Pickers. Both series deal with interesting historical artifacts.

And now for a completely tongue-in-cheek response to this thread's question: Warren The Ape. ;D  OMG the stuff they show on TV nowadays!

@Cashper:
I have encountered situations where there's not enough text displayed in the "Matches" tab. Please consider adding an option which would allow the user to add more characters before the found/highlighted text.

Since Curt previously mentioned a spelling error, please allow me to mention that in Options the context menu should read "Integrate MultiFind into Explorer folder's context menu".

Like others have mentioned, I'm also hoping for a portable version.

Thanks very much. :)

Because Emsisoft already were handling the support of Online Armor, I expect it to be safe to trust the future of it...

I agree and hope any changes to product lines will be gradual. It seems Mike Nash (Tall Emu) has considerable respect for Christian Mairoll (Emsisoft) and trusts him to take care of OA software.

Here's Mike Nash's blog comments on the sale of Online Armor:

Perhaps I'm a "dummy" for saying this, but it occurs to me  a dummy file generator could be of use in these file renaming situations. The dummy files would  serve as temporary spacers to ensure the correct file sequence remains intact. Then a file renaming utility like ReNamer (my fave also) could process the files without disrupting the correct file order.

So for me the question becomes---Is there an easy to use dummy file generator which can batch generate multiple files?

For example, if I am missing 725006, 725012, 725035, and 725057 from a series [725001-725100], then I would (1) batch generate those specific dummy files, (2) rename all files with ReNamer or other renaming utility, and (3) delete the temp dummy files.

Uh...just trying to figure a quick and easy way to address these renaming problems.

Hi ha14--thanks for telling.

Emsisoft's malware comparative test displayed on that page is now over a year old --June 2009. Perhaps it's not in their interest to update it, but they really should offer more recent data.

Nonetheless, I have found Emsisoft security software to be quite respectable. Sure there are some false positives with a-squared, but overall they offer solid protection.

Living Room / Re: Dell knowingly shipped millions of defective computers?
« Last post by sajman99 on July 05, 2010, 12:26 PM »
Well crud, I was thinking the Dell Studio 17 laptop was looking pretty good, but this thread has only added to my serious doubts.  Evidently the overheating/fan issue mentioned by J-Mac is a continuing problem which persists on several models.

I had *thought* when Michael Dell took over the reigns a few years ago he would steer the company back on course. But it sure seems the ship is still sinking. :( It's just one lawsuit after another.

Living Room / Re: XP Hangs on Shut Down
« Last post by sajman99 on July 03, 2010, 01:20 PM »
Glad you pinpointed the problem so now you won't have to reinstall. :) Looks like your persistence paid off.

If you're referring to the main XP Prefetch folder, you can delete the tiny .pf or not. It doesn't really matter as windows will automatically control the folder contents (assuming default registry settings). You can also use a tool like NirSoft's WinPrefetchView, but again--you'll actually be micro-managing an area where XP auto-manages just fine.
