Developer's Corner / Re: Launching Google search in Visual Basic - Help?

Ah, alright, I'll have to try that. I managed to get Google working a while back, but the WikiPedia one is definitely cool!

Thanks for the info! :)

This is almost 4000 pixels wide! Don't blame me for using a 10.8MP camera :P

(The original image was 3MB, Paint took it to the current image size).

I'll try a re-upload now...

EDIT: No dice.

DC Member Programs and Projects / Nag@Me - very simple reminder application
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on February 06, 2009, 05:15 PM »
I just whipped up this tiny program for my dad, and figured it might help someone else out as well. Nag@Me is a very simple reminder program - you run it, tell it how often you want it to nag you, and what you want it to say. Hit OK and its off. To close the app, single-click the tray icon and hit the Cancel button.

Requires .NET 3.0+, Windows 2k or above

Hope someone finds it useful! :)

Everyone please dont use 3rd party image hosting services which can dissapear, attach images to posts instead please.

Sorry mouser, but it wouldn't upload my post w/ picture! I tried 3 times, and it kept bringing me to a blank page. :o Should not happen with a 500kb picture in JPG format.

EDIT: I'm more tired than I thought

Circle Dock / Re: Few question about CircleDock...

I haven't used CD for a month or so now, so I can't really answer your questions, BUT I can say that posting multiple times is just going to annoy people. Wait and see if someone replies and ONLY bump a topic after at least a couple days. It is just rude - kind of like asking someone something, and when they don't reply because they are thinking/doing multiple things, you poke/tap them.

On that note... BUMP.

I have the same computer (motherboard fried from a bad RAM stick, though) - yea, it is just as stupid as can be. And heavy for just a mobo, CPU and case (everything else has been stripped)!

Just another reason to build your computer from scratch, or go my route and mod your OEM to the point of having to ask "will XYZ void my warranty?". I'm sure the downside of my plan is having to explain that yes, this is STILL (technically) an eMachines, and YES, my warranty is (somehow) still valid. That, and my extended warranty through Circuit City was money (not) well spent, as all their AZ stores are closing (dunno about the rest of the USA).

EDIT: Also, that same RAM stick fried a friend's mom's computer when a certain moron (not saying his name, but he is 16 and his name starts with a "w" and ends in "carzz") put it in a 2nd computer - generating the SAME burning smell and smoke. Hmm... odd.

I didn't take pics - I will next time around though. It was an amusing sight (minus my cursing like an insane person stuck in a cage). ;D Took me like 45 minutes to figure out that the cable was like 2" too short to reach it on the ground. >:(

EDIT: His HD is on the BOTTOM of the case, screwed in. Don't ask, its an HP (their laptops rule, their desktops have hard drives that hit 150* F and are screwed into the bottom of their cases)

lol ;D

Example: My dad had a massive computer problem about a week and a half ago and, conveniently, the day before I made a full backup with Macrium Reflect (found it here @ DC, too! :D). I brought his tower into my room, connected the HD to my mobo (this was done by turning his whole computer upside down... ugh), and Windows was like "OHai new HD found!" (not literally :P).

It also got disconnected several times after the backup (I was too busy to move it back), and I reconnected it with no issues.

Uhh... yea? I hot swap internal drives. IDE drives are recognized by windows, but not fully by the BIOS, so you can't interact with them until a reboot. SATA drive hot swapping is fine as long as the drive isn't in use.

Random info:

For any of the gamers out there that use DA: It closes NFSU2 within 1 second on a 1.6Ghz Celeron M.

I should build a list of how long it takes to close each app :tellme:

i wonder if they have docks for IDE hard drives. now i have plenty of those!

I've found out the hard way that IDE hard drives (and, well, some SATA drives) aren't hot-swap friendly. Especially so when the said drive is, ya know, active. BSoDs and hard lockups aren't usually regarded as a positive thing. :o

But it WOULD be nice to have that ability with these so-called "HD toasters" (I'm hoping because of appearance, not heat! :P) :)
"Safely remove hardware", buddy...

You can't do "Safely Remove Hardware" on internal drives ;)

EDIT: Although it would be a blast getting someone that pissed you off to "Safely remove C:\" ;D ;D ;D

I lean it up against a fence outside and fire up the electric leaf blower!!

Lmao you can't be serious!!! I'll have to try that one day. ;D

I have a USB powered vacuum, very similar to the one you linked - it isn't ... powerful like one would usually want, but it does get the lighter and bigger dirt (the obvious stuff). I used to put vent filters in my fans (i have 150mm fans so it fits just perfectly), but the air lost a lot of speed (obviously). It did pick up a LOT of dirt though. Kind of disgusting.

  • I get HORRIBLE migraines, to the point of literally screaming in my sleep and waking myself up (the sleep is my attempt to get them to go away, and I have one right now in fact). :(
  • I can go from sitting down and sleepy to jumping up and down for no apparent reason, at any given time.
  • I still collect my Pokemon!!! :-*
  • I have this massive love of the color blue. Blue computer, blue mouse LEDs, blue keyboard LEDs, blue speaker power LED, blue monitor power LED, and in most games I'll buy anything if it is blue. :D
  • Like my dad, I'll count random items - example: if there is a garage door I am looking at, I'll start counting the number of decorative boxes or whatever on the thing - even though I already know how many there are, I do it anyways. Same with walking. I used to look down and make sure that I stepped an even number of steps in any given concrete "section", even if I looked like an idiot.
  • The last time I went outside voluntarily, I was with a group of friends that described my appearance outdoors as "strange", "rare" and "random". Be that as it may, I think it was already highlighted by my "Geek Squad" shirt. :P

I could go on and on, but those 5 came to me the quickest. Oh, I like flip-flops, too. ;D

Because of misinformed people stating "OMFG VISTA IS TEH SUX BUT WIN2008 IS SO OMG LEAN!!11! one one"

I laughed. Hard.

And if your going for whats "new" and "hot", why not just hop on the Windows 7 wagon? It's relatively stable from what I've heard...

Developer's Corner / Random error, does not happen all the time (VB .NET)
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 29, 2009, 12:03 AM »
Alright, if you haven't done the BASIC Programming School here (that would be the language, the School is not BASIC :P), and you plan on it, this may be a bit of a spoiler (not a lot, but there is code in the SS).

Anyways, I'm working on the 2nd Basic assignment. Easy stuff, nothing complicated at all - I've done it before. I whipped up a small little prog that does it quite nicely, except for approximately 1/2 of the time, this error appears in VB - A NullReferenceException has occurred. Alright... so I threw in a Try/Catch block to see if I could get the error to appear in a format that someone from planet Earth could read... and nothing. On Error Resume Next does the same thing. The error "details" make no sense at all.

I've stepped through the program using the debugging tools, and it won't trigger any debugging issues. What the heck, seriously?

Anyone got ideas?

It is probably spending the CPU time fending off Process Tamer, essentially attacking itself. You should be able to turn it off via Panda itself, although I've never used any Panda products.

I would not worry about CD's development halting, as not only is VideoInPicture (CD author) dedicated to what he does, but even if something were to happen, the source code is openly available for anyone knowing C#. :)

I agree with all the positive thoughts - I don't currently run Circle Dock, and I have purchased ObjectDock Plus, but looking back I probably used CD more than ODP. It's just much easier to setup, and like you said, doesn't get in the way when moving to the side of the screen (important for gamers like me).

EDIT: Oh, and welcome to the forum! :D

(3) log in on one of those pages, then I'm returned not to that page but to one of the other pages (maybe the one that I accessed first?).

Ugh, I HATE this bug. It goes to the last page you visited before logging in. Bad cookie setting would be my guess.

Out of those 3, that one would be my first to fix, because it affects all browsers.

Basically, your Tahoma font is screwed up/missing (probably because of Windows 7 being beta with problems still). This is NO fault of Circle Dock at all (just to clarify that).

Download the font below (save it), extract the font, right click it and Install it. The error will cease.

EDIT: Also, nicely formatted error report!

try /verysilent

and that is somewhat odd... why would you want to silently UNinstall something. I can understand silent INSTALLS, but that's kind of odd.

I'm assuming your using this info for non-malicious purposes (assuming that the uninstall app even allows the /verysilent switch), right?

It was more-or-less random/wordplay. I'm a bit infatuated with... OO, CAKE! I mean, Portal. Yes. "Aperture Science, I'm making a note here..."

"Portal" in any context immediately triggers my need for Portal. *Wreckedcarzz head begins spinning in an endless paradox/Do Until i = 1 Step 2*
