« Last post by jgpaiva on December 10, 2011, 08:57 AM »
When did Google start previewing the search results on the side of the page?
Also, for those that are unaware (I only found out about this last week), that's also where the links for cached pages are, now.

2.x, it's the one I had already installed in the computer. But I might try the 3.x later :) (along with other languages ;) )

Found some Python ones.

There's a version for Python 2.x (python 2 folder) and one for Python 3.x (python 3 folder).

I used the "get source" near the top right of the aforementioned page to get an archive of the relevant files.
Thanks! I've been playing with this and finding it amusing :)

I suppose I was especially confused by calling "2-factor verification" something new, since it is almost a year old and that's nearly a decade in internet time. ;)
I guess that's because google has been pushing it just now, along with the new look. At least for me, I hadn't seen anything in gmail asking me to try it until last week or something like that.

Seems a bit much for a basic Google email account. So I'm guessing they're putting it in place primarily for something else. Possibly to make GoogleDocs more appealing to corporate buyers?
Not sure about that. People don't like to get their accounts stolen. Facebook has had this for like ~6months or something, I guess Google had to respond with a similar feature.

I've been using it, but I find it a bit annoying. Along with two step authentication, they have also implemented single-use passwords: you have to change the password for your email client (in all computers), google talk and desktop calendar (if you have any of those). Also, if you delete browser cookies when you close the browser, you will have to enter the phone password every time you login with google.

Upgrade to smf2? ;-)
I wouldn't say this is a matter important enough (most spam gets deleted quickly anyway) for mouser to lose a month of his life upgrading and porting stuff :P

1) putting people on a watchlist if their first post is made "fairly long" after registering.
2) watchlist if a "very few posts" member replies to a necro-thread.
Actually, that exists already. We get emails for suspicious posts. But it implies that posts live until someone checks the email. That's why I mentioned suspicious posts could be subjected to moderator approval.

Actually, after looking at the logs, today looks similar to other days. December 03 and 02, for example, had 6 and 7 spammers respectively,  whereas today there were 8. So it may just be my perception that is fooling me :P

Renegade: Maybe not blacklisting "ugg" (banning a user automatically for using a word sounds dangerous), but maybe we could subject posts containing "suspicious words/expressions" to moderator approval?

Usually we don't have enough spam to compensate the number of hassle that would create, I think.
Many members join to create a new thread about a bug, coding snack request or just to introduce themselves (or thank for a program).
Also, many of the bots actually register like 1month before making the first post, so I guess it wouldn't be much help.

However, I did notice that today there seems to be more spam than usual making it past the registration process. I have no idea why this is happening, though.

I see! Neat :) I like your method, the other cool advantage is that even if google blocks the account, you can update the script to a new account and it won't stop working for everyone!

Probably some people won't like that NoteMe is now centrally processing messages and that mails are stored in the trash folder of gmail, but I am aiming for easy of use and reliability.
I assume you are using an account hardcoded into the program?
Personally, I wouldn't be very confortable with this, especially because someone could get those credentials from the binary and read lots of information from other people. (They could at least build a decent spam list from emails sent using your program, which scares me a bit)
Maybe you could warn people about it and allow them to change to a different account through an options dialog?

[edit] I really should start reading the whole threads before replying  :-[ What I'm complaning about does not happen, see here for details [/edit]

Nudone's designs are always fantastic, and I think the Mayan theme is great for this year!
I think it would be nice to include the calendar somewhere, since it's what is most related to 2012 in the mayan culture.

It need Windows shell to work and I use bbLean (BlackBox clone for Windows) :-\

It has been a long time since I've used bblean (I thought it was already discontinued!), but it was very flexible, you could customize the clock exactly the way you wanted. Why don't you use it instead?

Developer's Corner / Re: Ribbon UI - is it really THAT good?
« Last post by jgpaiva on November 29, 2011, 07:35 AM »
FWIW I haven't seen any serious scientific study to support the contention that a ribbon interface (at least as has been implemented by Microsoft) is more effective or productive than the classic drop-down menu system.
I remember when they were designing the new interface, Microsoft did a series of extensive tests which have shown that the ribbon is easier to use. I know there was a very long video (2h or something like that) showing how they tested it and why they settled for this interface.

Because that's all it really is at this point - a 'look.'
IMO you are seriously undervaluing how important the user interface is. Apple has repeatedly shown how important the look and feel of stuff (software and hardware) is for people.

What users do appreciate, however, is a well designed interface. And there's nothing to show them a ribbon is superior. So I don't think the absence of a ribbon is any disincentive for your customers. I have yet to hear any reviewer recommend not buying an app just because it didn't have one.
That I surely agree with you. IMO what you must decide is if the ribbon is good for you, as it isn't good for every type of app. I think Ath's links should be very helpful with that, at least I found them very interesting.

Also, but this is only personal taste, please avoid at all costs non-stantard interfaces :) (and I hate what MS has done with the title bar of windows in office :/ )

Still, what you mentioned is very similar to the way keepass works.

I hope its okay to updtae the thread as things have, moved on a bit in xml, take a look at Liquid XML Editor which is a fairly new entrant but very well built, just look at its fancy graphical interface.
Hi,

I have noticed that out of 5 posts you did on DC, 4 of them are about the same software. Also, your post is very out of the scope of this thread.
So, as per the rules of the forum, if you are affiliated with the software, please clearly say so.

They did indeed, that's why I didn't delete the posts. Its incredible how my method of searching for a sub-string of the post in google is becoming increasingly ineffective. Not only are they generating unique phrases, as they are becoming increasingly coherent.

Hi Christopher, welcome to DC!

Actually, that was a feature of GridMove, but it caused random restarts to too much people, and I ended up disabling it.
Right now, I guess the best way to do it is just to press win+g (to show the command window) and then 'r' (to restart GridMove).

First: this post sounds like 100% spam.
Second: the site to where the previous post points has a fake tucows review (the text has an english orthography error, and I was unable to find it in tucows' site).
I have removed the link and kept the thread, since 40hz pointed a good option [which incidentally is also free].
