Total received from those 12 payments was 287mBTC which apparently is worth about $2,000 USD currently

wow, maybe it's time to cash in?
then again...

At least hold until after the SegWitx2 split on the 16th, then at least you get "free" coin - of questionable value - off the new fork.

My question is, does anyone here still use Bitcoin?

I'm still mining it. I used the (mined post Alice) coin we had to upgrade the pair of S2's to a single S9 (way cheaper to run) back in May. The S9 has managed to produce about 0.62 since then running out of the AntPool.

Anybody have a better/best/favorite pool suggestion??

Maybe I missed it, but it seemed to me that neither the article nor the video explained what about the change caused the AI to see the turtle as a rifle.
Since we really don't know how extensively these systems are actually being used...there's probably a - security - reason for that being )intestinally) omitted. Kinda like when the Myth Busters demonstrated how high security biometrics could be fooled...without actually showing you how they could be fooled.

Either that or the hack is waiting on a patent application - You just can't tell these days...

...Come to think of it - my numbers are off a bit - it's actually a somewhere north of $60,000 I'm down because of the "early" selloff.

So... I'm going to stop thinking about this now....because my cavalier is broken.

Note: It was worth it..  ;)

 ;D

I wish I had that problem :)

I must have phrased it badly then... You see, it's not that I have invested $40,000 in the Alice project. The actual project cost is just a bit over $8,000 right now. It's that by selling off my holdings (early...) to cover a large-ish portion of her initial ($3,000) cost ... I've to date lost ~$40,000 based on the current value of BTC that I had sold...for just over $200 each (back then..).

So in hind sight from a strictly fiscal stand point, it's a pretty horrific loss over a ~2 year period ... But investments - as always - are a long game affair.

But the point of getting into BTC/crypto coin in general was equal parts Renegade's infectious enthusiasm, and my own interest in leveraging it as a means to an end. That end of course being Project Alice... So as anyone who has read the Alice Chronicles can surmise...the end result - and the fun had in the process - was ultimately (to me) worth it.

The real question is.. some of you crazy people who were ranting about it, and telling us how bitcoin was going to take off during the early days of it.. are any of you rich enough to retire and bankroll the rest of us yet?

Stoic Joker? Did you sell off your entire stash for that motorcycle, or did you keep some of your BTC you spent so much time and effort (and USD) mining?

And also I'm curious if 40hz's opinion of BTC has changed at all over the years since this thread began.

<Answering from the very deep dark hole that Deozaan just dug for me> Yes, at the time I sold off all of my holding to buy Alice. So... -(based on that)- to date she has "cost" me about $40,000.

:D Fuck...

Living Room / Re: Portuguese Translation Question

you at least need a comma:
// If any value has already been applied to the TOTAL purchase, the BALANCE will be equal to the new value minus what has already been paid

Perhaps, but I'm just pasting it like I found it ... And trying to understand what's happening with the translation of it.

Although I did notice after posting it that the two (all caps) words in question are also the only two words in the original text that are already in English.

*Shrug* ...This whole project is driving me up a wall.

Living Room / Portuguese Translation Question
« Last post by Stoic Joker on October 23, 2017, 03:11 PM »
So I've been spending a lot of time translating Portuguese code comments into English so I can so I can figure out what is going on with a project that has become a rather agonizing nightmare. Many times when the comments - which are in all caps - are translated one or more words will come out in all caps, never all words, just some words...the rest are in lower case after translation. So I'm wondering is there something linguistically that is implying emphasis on certain words?

Example (as cut from code):
// SE ALGUM VALOR JÁ TIVER SIDO APLICADO AO TOTAL DA COMPRA O BALANCE SERÁ IGUAL AO NOVO VALOR MENOS O QUE JÁ FOI PAGO

Translated:
// If any value has already been applied to the TOTAL purchase the BALANCE will be equal to the new value minus what has already been paid

Developer's Corner / Re: MySQL Syntax Question

Code: Text [Select]
  1. SELECT * FROM table WHERE id LIKE '$id'

Just make sure before you change it to an = that the $id variable is never used with % inside it to do a wildcard search.

Oh I passed that point months ago (been on this since April) ... It just finally got to me this morning. One of the other more glaring bits was a 1 page report that took almost 3 minutes to generate because of how badly it was coded. Now that same report only takes 300ms.

Hope you're getting paid hourly...

rofl ... Nope - Bid flat rate for job -  This is what's technically referred to as a huge fucking mistake.

Cool, thanks guys!

I had a feeling it was just totally borked (they actually used like on an integer), but being entirely self taught I thought it couldn't hurt to double check myself.

This project has been a total horror show. From finding 56 if statements in a row (Yeah...) to finding if, if else, if else combinations that left no way of handling 'surprises' ... And much of the rest of the code is just total shit.

Developer's Corner / MySQL Syntax Question
« Last post by Stoic Joker on October 18, 2017, 09:34 AM »
Okay, so I managed to get myself roped into a development project involving a web portal/reservation system that is huge (300,000+ lines of code), that was previously worked on by 3 other people - All of which (of course) had radically different coding styles.

...And most of the code comments are in Portuguese.. Which would be ok...if the half of me that is Portuguese, could actually read Portuguese ... But apparently I'm not quite that good at being Portuguese ... So in a nutshell, I'm F'ed :D

Anyhow... One of the thinks that I keep running across in the code - aside from the insanely excessive use of the (select all columns) asterisk - is the equally infuriating excessive use of 'like' - Example:

Code: Text [Select]
  1. SELECT * FROM table WHERE id LIKE '$id'

...Which to me means 'Where like exactly this' because there are no %'s used to allow the search to fuzz. So my question is, is there by chance some vaguely/obscure reason for this seeming insanity, or is it really ~'like'~ just as dumb as I think it is?

fSekrit / Re: LATEST VERSION: fSekrit 1.40 shrinkwrapped!
« Last post by Stoic Joker on October 08, 2017, 10:09 AM »
Still having issues with MS Windows Defender going FP on fSekrit. I was temporarily successful in just whitelisting the .exe for awhile ... But now every time I try to open it WD deletes the runtime copy from the Windows Temp folder, which makes it impossible to open without disabling the WD AV.

So I submitted it to the MS Windows Defender Team as a False Positive, and would greatly appreciate it if anyone else that also likes and relies on this delightfully handy little program to do the same in the hopes that it will finally be left alone to do the job that it does so well.

Thank you,

Stoic Joker

Living Room / Re: Disabling autoplaying videos in Chrome goes viral
« Last post by Stoic Joker on October 06, 2017, 02:11 PM »
Why do sites insist on annoying their visitors?

Because marketing people are scum? I don't think it's necessarily the fault of the site op, as they're usually just trying to get a few shekels per hundred banner clicks or something. They drop a advertiser provided (frequently poorly written) script on their site, and it then proceeds to pull gobs of random shit out of the river swill and sprays it all over the site with zero control over what sort of utter crap it might actually be.

*Shrug*

...I'm just glad there's a way to disable autoplay in FF also.
it’s possible to do the same thing in Firefox by typing “about:config” in the address bar and searching for “media.autoplay.enabled” and switching it to “false,”

...But no hope for IE/Edge yet.

Don't know if it matters/helps, but (in Word) Alt 247 with Calibri gives me the equivalent symbol here. Notepad with (default) Consolas does as well.

Region/Language/KB layout all set to US.

do you mean the correct symbol as shown in OP i.e. ≈
?

I will have a look at language, and keyboard layout

Yes.

But if something stupid like that were in place at Go Daddy, wouldn't their support people know about it?

Apparently not...

I finally just gave up and continued development from behind the alternate IP without incident. I checked every now and then for about a month and it was still blocking the original IP. However as your post just reminded me of the (almost forgotten) issue, I checked again just now. And it appears that the mysteriously unknown blocking thing has finally been lifted.

So... Let's just say you fixed it and move on.. :D

LifeLock has been running to center on the Equifax breach, with ads and press statements saying how the breach shows how important its own services cost: up to $29.99 a month can be to preserve you from identity theft.

...

Here’s what LifeLock isn’t spreading so widely: When you buy its security, you’re signing up for credit recording and monitoring services provided by, yes, Equifax.

...You just can't make this stuff up: Full Article here

Maybe it's just my rather dark sense of humor, but I just couldn't stop laughing after I read that. The unmitigated gall of corporations these days is just flat-out mind blowing.

Now they have a way to break things down so that they 'fail fast' and are more willing to do things the right way first, but they still don't listen most of the time, and complain when things are done exactly how they said they wanted.

I think we have the same job.. :)
