Hey everyone.
As I've just started at uni here in the UK, I thought I'd take the opportunity to use the uber fast broadband to backup my files online.
When I say files, I mean all my media and music, plus differentials of my docs.
So I thought, hey, lets head over to mozy, heard good things about them.
Oh, only 1MB upload speed. Nevermind, other services have to allow for faster, right?
Carbonite, and now trying elephant drive, and they are even slower than mozy!
I wanted to backup to my online webspace. Did a trial, and were talking above the 10MBps range here!
Annoyingly, I'm not allowed to use it for backups though. Against the TnC.
So, has anyone got any suggestions for some fast online backups?
Bare in mind I'm a student, and looking for something not too expensive (ie around the same as mozy, carbonite and elephant), and unlimited backup. (plan to back up probably about 400GB).
Had a bit of a google, but no luck. so naturally, I post here!

Thanks in advance

Living Room / Re: Creating backup buisness. NAS or normal hard drive?
« Last post by relequestual on November 01, 2008, 11:38 AM »
This is true. I've been looking into a personal online backup solution, and thinking about asking for a reseller partnership of some kind with some backup companies.

Can you suggest a few providers that offer the vendor programe as you said?
As students, we don't have alot of spare cash

Ive decided its a nice idea, but really impractical. I dont have the money to set it up or understand enough to maintain it.
thanks anyway

Living Room / Creating backup buisness. NAS or normal hard drive?
« Last post by relequestual on November 01, 2008, 07:39 AM »
Hi All

Not really sure where this fits, but here is safe me thinks.

Im a student, and have recently thought about setting up a backup solution for other students and charging them some sort of fee. ie £15 for setup and £2 a month for online backup. My first idea was to set up the backup to upload to my ftp space, passworded and zipped, but but i have since found this violates my web provides TnC. :(

My original idea before even coming to uni, was to buy a few hard drives, raid them, and set up an ftp server and allow it to be uploaded to that. My issue now is, do I get a NAS hard drive, and buy a router, or do I just get a normal raided external drive, and use software to act as an ftp server. I get the feeling the NAS would be better, but I have no idea how you would set it up or allow it to use FTP.

What's your opinions on this?

General Software Discussion / Re: Iobit smart defrag vs o&o defrag pro

I tried using the DiskTrix software, but it would never finish the defrag on C. Some file it couldnt handle, that all other defraggers ive tried can!

Ok, so I havent looked into updating my defragger for a while, when i saw iobit has been updated.
I had used it before, but then switched to o&o, as it seemed to have more features.

If both of these suck in your opinion, what do you suggest? freeware or otherwise?

oh, and if several people say another, i can add it to the poll
32
hum, ok, interesting. how would i go about creating the hard links?
33
yep. rather. which is why i came here! the best place on the net for finding software that i dont already know about.

Hi, thanks for the prompt reply.
None of these will get the right outcome I'm after.
When I say virtual folder, i mean as much as it can be accessed by any other programme, as i need to select all the files in the virtual folder, from a web based interface.
Much like Visual Subst creates a virtual drive from a folder, it can be accessed by anything.
35
Ok, the subject is a bit of a mouthful, but let me explain.
I have all my music foldered by artists and then album. I want a way to create a virtual directory of all the files in the sub directories of the music collections root. why you ask? so I can upload them to Oosah, which currently offers 1TB of free storage (yes you read right, 1TB!). However it lacks a way to upload whole directories.

Any ideas?

Yeh, I know of windows blinds. Cant say i like it that much. I guess when I move to vista Ill have to use it. suks. Thanks for the effort put into that post though.
Anyone else offer anything??
37
I'm in the process of reviewing Styler for my site, when I thought, "hold on, what about vista users?".
Yes, I'm still on xp. not quite ready to make the jump. lots of people have though.
does anyone know of a vista version of this app?
http://www.crystalxp...7-explorer-tools.htm
i did do some googling, and the thing is, i know there are many downloadable styles for it that look like they are in vista, but they are not, they are simply using an OS skin, often via windows blinds.
I just want to give my readers a vista alternative.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated

General Software Discussion / Re: need IE6 in Vista home
« Last post by relequestual on May 27, 2008, 06:24 PM »
Google with the following term:

"IE6eolasNT"

or "IE6eolas"

These should get you stand alone versions from IE. At least that version is running on my XP system.
This is reported not to work on vista.

Note to mwb1100
cheers, i will let them know. cant test it myself, but thanks! =D

Ok heres a cracker for you donation coder folk. You havent let me down yet! n this isnt going to be the time!
A web designer friend of mine recently got a nice new laptop, which runs vista home. however, problem when trying to run ie6 using the method before.
anyone know of a way it can be run, sandboxed or otherwise? i know virtual machines, but it seems you need the vista pro or higher to use them.

You know, I really do love donation coder. Its so the place to be! =D

the enterprise does it? really?
ive been looking but unable to find anything that even does it.
does it allow you to boot the same machine as your virtualising, or just turn a virtual into a real one?
can you find me the link where it says it can do that? i cant find any information on the website.
I dont mean convert a machine to a virtual one, i mean the reverse, a virtual to normal
42
oh
i was worried there might be something like that.

why dont the VM people make a way of being able to boot from virtual machines aswell. Im sure EVERYone (by everyone i mean alot of ppl) want it
43
does ai roboform live in the tray? i am one of those ai roboform lovers also. but its not in my tray.  maybe its an option.

there was a time when i used to try to keep my system tray empty, to maximize pc performance.
but then i thought WTF am i paying for this fast cpu for and wasting all my time idleing, i rather have a tray full of fun stuff :)

I know that quote is OLD, but even so, i agree!
ppl are like "oh, why have u got so much crap in ur bar for". hello? quad core was made for me, the multi tasker!
44
OK, so here it is. Im sure some of you have heard of drive image XML. I was thinking, im using windows virtual machine, and you can have an external shared folder. What if i was to use drive image XML to create an image of the HD, and then use a bootable CD with drive image xml to restore the image to a blank HD i have spare. Would that then have effectivle made a virtual machine into a bootable one?

am i wrong or missing something?

Thing is, i want to use vista in xp (know how and can), but i also dont want to do TOO much with it, and then have 2 do it all again when i eventually make the switch, which will happen sooner or later.

Your opinions/thoughts/comments please?

spyware terminator picks this up as spyware. I'm reporting it as a false positive right this very minute. Thanks so much for this wounderful app!  you rock

General Software Discussion / Re: How do I delete big folders with ease?
« Last post by relequestual on April 30, 2008, 02:17 AM »
Thanks everyone for helping me through this one.
Shift Delete worked, but the problem was, it would keep hitting access denied permission errors, and stop the delete.
i will give sysrun a try tonight and let you know how it goes

What i was really looking for was if someone had created a small app that takes over the windows delete and processes skipping errors and ending with a report. Like teracopy does for copying, but for deleting.

Thanks again donation coder members!

personally, i love google reader notifier.
I look at it all the time, and think to myself,
"gesh, i have so much work to be doing, but lets just look at a few of the 1200 news items i have yet to read"

on a more serious note, im sure im not the first to say, add blocker plus. it wouldnt be firefox without it!

I backed up my parents laptop about a month ago. didnt have the time to zip before backing up as it was way slow, so i copied the C drive across and then zipped it on mine. Now the problem is, i cant seem to delete the unziped backup. it keeps failing or not even starting.

Is there a bit of software out there that can delete a big folder with loads of files in it without any hassle?

cheers

You may start out with supplying a link to "ZA"!  ;)
Why would i link people to the Zone Alarm website?
Surly I'm not the only one who calls it ZA?
