General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for QuickBooks Alternative
« Last post by paradisusvic on October 18, 2024, 01:58 PM »
Glad it made you consider the free & open source alternative

Let the license laps, and put the QB Company files in "cold storage"

Here's a tip: Export your files to CSV before the license expires. This allows you to start converting them for use in GnuCash

(Having them in a non-proprietary format is a big advantage anyway!)

If something happens, grab a new subscription, pop the thing back open and do whatever.

"your best bet for importing your QB data into GnuCash would be to output your data in a CSV format and either import the CSV data directly or convert the CSV to QIF and use the QIF importer." --FAQ.

This method offers more flexibility and avoids relying on renewed subscriptions :)

So I'm hoping someone might know of a - cheap, economical, or free - QuickBooks alternative that can import/convert/access the QB files without requiring ongoing licensing/subscription costs

Hello & good day! You may want to check out the free and open source GnuCash program:

Website: https://gnucash.org/

They mention QuickBooks in their FAQ page: https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Quickbooks.C2.AE.3F

These are forked scripts from the original article: https://github.com/erikmack/qb-escape

Hope this helps,
Vic

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: What are Mouser plan for this tool?
« Last post by paradisusvic on October 16, 2024, 12:42 PM »
I would like to know @Mouser opinion on this and some suggestion on possible substitutions o utilities which are going to become obsolete as technology progress (basically with Windows 11 step)

On my side, it would be an honor to help Jesse/Mouser with bringing these tools to the "modern era" (as per the definition of modernity that users may have these days!).

The core point would be for them to have the one and true "Mouser's Blessing™" & seal of approval :)

I know that programs are "our babies" and the most important thing is for any clone/update to keep their original "spirit", with the overseeing eye of the original creator :-*

Just wanted to step-in as I believe I have the necessary skills to execute such an update and it would be an honor to make Jesse's life better, so he doesn't have to spend time re-coding what he so generously already did share

My 2 cents in positive willingness,
Vic

Found Deals and Discounts / Coding a new program
« Last post by paradisusvic on October 11, 2024, 10:56 PM »
Hello dear friends, this is a time-limited offer! :)

Here’s the context: I have to renew a domain expiring on the 16th. Freelance coding sites can take weeks to process payments to PayPal, so I thought I would offer to code a program for only $13 PayPal for a member of the DC community.

WIN/WIN

The code can be personal/private or public. As long as you can transfer the $13 PayPal upon code completion in the next few days, feel free to reach out to me either by forum PM or email at [email protected] with your requirements.

Thank you very much & I'm open to multiple project types/themes!

P.S.: If it is something in the likes a “coding snack,” even better. You can choose whether to have the resulting source code posted publicly or kept private.

I remain eager to bring your program to life and, of course, to help each other 🤗.

From a very thankful, Vic

N.A.N.Y. 2025 / Re: NANY 2025
« Last post by paradisusvic on September 30, 2024, 05:46 PM »
Web browsers are an atrocious runtime though.

On the bright side, the runtime is standardized and already installed on the device, which translates to zero configuration on the user's side. 😊

The latest person who wanted me to code for the web specifically asked for it so the app would run on mobile and desktop "as is". 📱💻

It seems that users value convenience more than raw execution speed. 😘

N.A.N.Y. 2025 / Re: NANY 2025
« Last post by paradisusvic on September 30, 2024, 10:29 AM »
I hereby start a thread for NANY 2025 projects.

Super! I'm definitely participating in NANY 2025.

I’ve been working on web applications lately and I’m pleasantly amazed at how much web technologies have progressed (WASM rocks!).

Perhaps it’s okay for a N.A.N.Y. release to be a web page? Is there a requirement for a release to be downloadable?

For instance, a client requested numerical OCR from the web by processing a user-selected image file with numbers, which was done very conveniently right from the webpage. (Once loaded, it even worked offline).

Native software will always have its place; nonetheless, I find the web to be very capable these days

Special mention to Emscripten: Emscripten.org/about

We'd certainly love to see the tools making a come-back in full modernized glory!

Thanks for any clarification and for the all good work you have done with this products time going.

I second the gratitude toward @Mouser. Many thanks for everything you do dear Jesse!

"all opened applications" can be web browsers, 3D games, file managers, text editors...

I concur. What can be done realistically is narrowing the list of opened applications to be "all supported applications", with modules defining each application and a centralized always-on service that can be invoked to run each highlighting module on demand.

(This way the app can be extended by multiple programmers over time)

I should be pushing code to GitHub somewhere within the next days.

You really should.  :D

Hello there TM :D The user went on a hiatus (he sent PM explaining his situation) so this one went to the back burner.

...Let's make it a more realistic: within the month. It deserves to be released; the app does look useful :-*

Windows R & D 🤣 such as removing wrp /windows defender and some other stuff as I come across it.
This is what I'm trying to achieve.

Congrats on the consistent blog!

Hello dear friend, did you consider the option of macro/automation?

If a program is already working and doing a good job, but only the start-up clicks are the hassle, perhaps this can be a solution.

Im wondering if its possible to create a driver or something,  that automatically unlock the file in the background

Of course it's possible :)

The "core" of the programs you mentioned can certainly be cloned for background running by putting some work on it

MagiFold v0.1.0

Screenshot from 2024-07-13 23-07-08.png

Notes:

- Use the "-d" or "--directory" switch followed by the source path containing PDF files.
- The special "." path (a single dot) represents the current directory for the executable file.
- Only the top level is processed. Sub-directories are skipped.
- Errors are documented on screen, including the file path and error message.

Feel free to ask if you need any further assistance!

Just added on-screen error reporting.

The program acts on the cautious side by processing top directory only ...
-paradisusvic (July 13, 2024, 07:14 PM)

This would be the only thing that remains malleable for this PDF-focused version. If you’d like it to browse the whole (sub)directory tree, feel free to say so.

As of now, the main functionality is complete and has been pushed to GitHub

The program takes a cautious approach by processing the top directory only. It uses “.” to indicate the current directory for the MagiFold.exe executable.

Got it, coding a small CLI as an initial release exactly by your parameters @ https://github.com/paradisusis/MagiFold

(This one is a prime candidate to be expanded into a GUI with configurable options )

Hello & good day!

I need to create  TXT files for each PDF with the same filename, and inside the TXT file write the filename less the file type.

Which PDF2TXT tool are you using for the conversion? If possible, show the actual command you are using :)

(Some tools have OCR settings, etc.)

Yes, your request "reincarnated" on KeyStick v0.1 which is 85-90% complete

It is very appreciated.

The days of DC fundraisers sure look like fun :-*

still run into annoying stuff like this with fuzzy match though :(

Bruiser
First list:
Bruiser
Gunbuster (1988)
buster.1988.internal.bdrip.x264-ghouls.mkv
Second list:
Buster (1988).mkv.torrent

Hello & good day! You may want to try with "Weighted" as algorithm and using different "cutoff" values.

Cutoff defaults to 75. In your case, you may want to try with 80, then 85, then 90 up to 95.

(Until you find the configuration that behaves closest to what you need/expect)

Cheers!
