I am using  a program called "What's Running" http://www.download....2094_4-10256718.html The author' site seems to have a problem but the program can still be downloaded at Cnet.
What's running gives you info on everything that's running!!: processes, services, modules, ip connections, drivers, startup and gives you system info. It allows you to, stop, start, delete, disable, edit( process priority as an example). It is free for personal use and cost 25$ for commercial use. I wonder how they can collect if their web site is down..
I like it best after trying many others, I find it rather complete. And it has somewhat of an explorer interface.
Bye.

General Software Discussion / 16 bit systemon windows XP
« Last post by jacquesrober on December 26, 2006, 06:59 PM »
I have encountered a problem. It seems that the 16 bit system of my windows XP is defective!! There are some apps. that seemingly requires this system to install. I could always do a recovery from backup but with the type of software bundling I have on this computer, I very much hesitate to do that. I cannot do a simple repair because window XP is available only as a bundle. This means many many hours of desinstalling all kinds of sh...t software that is not needed or even wanted.
The backup copy is the same bundle as what is on the recovery partition on the hard disk.
Does anyone know of a way to repair XP without reinstalling this bundle?

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: an indication that "start-up" is finished

Second that. Great idea. I, am not always patient and I often start doing things before startup is completed, thus adding more delays.

Don't I wish I could copy those files and about 40GB of other files ans stuff! from my old fried computer.
The hard disk gave up its life in a thunderstorm and probably saved something else while doing it! "My hero". The computer was not well protected against transient  voltages.
The hard drive data was recoverable: at the tune of between $500 up to possibly $2000.
Bought a new computer, and a hard drive and sold the old one  with a new hard drive at a bargain price . The replacement is protected against voltage variations.
VM ware is a possibility, I still need to find a virtual diskette reader.
This is probably a one time use, as there are very few if any programs requiring diskette nowadays.
I thought that virtual diskette drives existed to enable saving material already existing on diskettes and that could not be readily transfered to CD.

General Software Discussion / Virtual diskette reader
« Last post by jacquesrober on December 23, 2006, 12:33 PM »
Hi,
I need help.
I have to install a program that requires to be installed both from a diskette and a CD. I had this program on my old computer and it was running flawlessly.
I tried installing the same program on my new computer: no diskette drive but 2 DVD,CD, readers and burners.
I copied the data that should be on a diskette to a CD and tried installing the program by directing to that CD when prompted to load the diskette. It did not work .
I tried installing a borrowed diskette reader, but to my surprise there was no possibilities of connecting the diskette reader: no connector for that purpose in this new have it all (or almost?) computer.
So now I am looking for a virtual diskette reader that will react just like the real thing and fool the installation program into installing the program.
This is a one time requirement, so that I am not hot on buying expensive? adaptors to do the job(if any exist at all).
Is a virtual diskette reader possible??
I would appreciate any help at all.
I am not fluent with programming and have no way to see the code of the program I want to install.

Hi, I am Jacques,
I like computers but don't know programming except for HTML. (Built 2 websites for my ex-employer) I am now 63 and retired with Marie who was a high school director.
I like to try new programs and manage to almost crash approx. once a week ;D. I have done 2 recoveries so far on my new HP purchased in september 2006 (superbundled computer with dual core processor.) Of course it takes a few days to debundle and reset the software the way it was before the almost crash. (It actually totally crashed: no winsock= no desktop).
This site is interesting and I hope it stays that way.
I am available for translation from english to french if you need it for programs or help files.
Salutations to all.
Jacques.
Oh ye,
I am from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Site/Forum Features / Re: Should we add a ratings/vote mod to the forum?
« Last post by jacquesrober on November 08, 2006, 07:43 PM »
For what it is worth: no to ratings. Look what they did to movies with ratings. You get a dull ex iron curtain or other out  of the way title that appeals to the reviewer sense of justice and the result is a dull movie that gets a 2 or 3 out of 6. (6 is really bad) Mission impossible III got a rating of 4.5. The audience will rate it just by going to view the movie. I agree that the same applies to posts: the more people reply, the more interesting the subject.

General Software Discussion / Re: Forum or any other review, improvment

Seing the responses to my suggestion, I realized that there are many ways to work on a computer to achieve the same end.
My end is not the same as the answers. I am trying to suggest a no click way to come back to a page (Coming back does require a click) and know where you just where (Highlighting the subject would do the job), without removing any answers or quewry as being read on that page,  because you might need to see that subject again. I realize that one can always go back and find that subject again, but there are lots of clicks involved. I am suggesting a simple highlight of where you last clicked on that will show when you return to the page without any other work.
I might not have understood the answers that appeared on my first suggestion, but it seemed to me that one had to click on something to get the wanted result. Maybee I am lazy (totally not impossible) but I have seen this highlighting in other forums, and found it very handy. Seeing the responses to the suggestion I presented made me realize that I do think in another language and might not present my ideas exactly as I see or understand them.
So be it, I am to old to change.
Regards to all.

I am retired, my monthly revenu is below $700.00 monthly. There are no housing expenses, but otherwise, expenses are normal. My only hobby is computer browsing?? I do not need any or few software programs, but I enjoy seing and using all kinds of new and handy apps. I use a lot of free software and I sometimes donate some funds even if I do not have much to give, because, I truly believe that it is a positive sign of support to the programmer. This said, I probably could nor afford to use a computer for fun if there were no free software available.
J.R. (I am trying a new name)

I am available to translate from french to english. BUT I use mostly english apps. If it can help, I will gladly do so. I am retired, so with a bit of time on my hands. My translations could be somewhat wrong as I use mostly english apps (repeat).
Regards,

jacquesrober (I am going to change this name eventually)

General Software Discussion / Forum or any other review, improvement
« Last post by jacquesrober on October 13, 2006, 08:30 PM »
Whenever you click a subject in a forum or review or chat, when you go back to the back page, there is no indication of where you where except for your own memory of the title. I have been in some forum where there is highlight of where you where last, when you return to the page previous to the article you choose. This does not seem to be a complex feature to apply and can be very timesaving. Check Ebay, for example, or " Mercedesshop.com" where going back to the previous page is highlighting your last subject after you return to the page.
Is my comment clear or is it to literal a tranlastion from french?
The mechanics of what I am writing about are: click on a subject on a page, return (back) to the page, and the title of the subject I went to is highlighted so that you can go on browsing without  having to find out where you where before clicking on the subject.
That would make browsing any forum so much easier.
The forums here are : VERY INTERESTING.
This is a wish to make browsing easier for people like me that have little shorttime memory.

Find And Run Robot / Find&Run Robot
« Last post by jacquesrober on October 12, 2006, 10:41 AM »
I am new to this forum and website. I have downloaded the "Find&Run Robot" software and this is a terrific utility. I have used for a while a similar utility called "Launchy" which was not that bad but did not come close to F&R in ease of use. I am french from Québec and had no problem with the language. I am now trying the clipboard utility, and I think I might have the same comments when I have used it more. I am not a power user but a retired amateur who enjoys technology for its sake.
so far very happy with this site.
