Lightworks has a free edition:

    http://www.lwks.com/compareversions

The installer is the same - features are enabled by the license installed. You need to register an account for the free version.

From the Installation and Activation Guide:

If you do not have a valid license for Lightworks, a renewable seven day license is issued to your system the first time you start Lightworks. You must have an active connection to the internet when you do this, otherwise the license will not be issued and you will be unable to use Lightworks until you do connect online.

When you start Lightworks, you will see a display in the Project Browser which counts down your free seven day trial period. Before the seven day period expires, you must register an account before you can continue using the free version of Lightworks.

then sew a running stitch around the edge with a strong beading thread

That's where you lost me.  Not only is sewing a 'running stitch' something I'd probably do a terrible job at, I don't even know what a "beading thread" is.

Looks like it was 50% off (at least Fallout 4), but that ended a day or two ago.

Glad it worked - to be honest I wasn't sure if when the computer booted up it would perform some initialization that would reset the USB hub and drop power on the ports for a moment.

My watch isn't even smart enough to have a battery, much less a Snapdragon of any sort.  I have to wind it each morning.  All it does is tell me what time it is (+/- a minute or so), and what the date is.  And that's pretty much all I want my watch to do.

bonjour service\mDSNResponder.exe (dont yet know what this does...

I don't know what ACDSee is using it for, but bonjour is a service discovery protocol that lets programs find services in a peer-to-peer setup on networks.  I'd guess that ACDSee uses it for some sort of media sharing on the local network.  Something like DLNA.

Syncback touch sounds interesting, but very expensive if you're paying for it

I haven't tried the Syncback Touch feature for phone backups yet.  Keep in mind that each Syncback Pro or SE license includes 2 "Touch" connection licenses.

The add-on Touch license costs does seem expensive  - $35 for each additional device seems like a lot.

I see it's now (without discount) more expensive than Syncovery

The prices are similar (Syncback Pro shows as $5 less than Syncovery Professional edition for me - maybe that's different for a quote in something other than USD?), but one thing to keep in mind is that for home use Syncback's single license allows install on 5 machines.  Syncovery's single license allows install on multiple machines, but only for use one at a time and by only a single user.

I haven't used Syncovery.  I have used SyncbackPro for quite a while: the UI can be complex, but I've found that the software's functionality is great.  And once the backup jobs are set up you don't really have to navigate the complex UI.

surprisingly Justin Timberlake

I thought I had seen him in several movies but it looks like just "Alpha Dog", which my recollection is that he did a really fine job there.  I also enjoy his comedic performances whenever he's on Saturday Night Live.  Anyway, while I'm not a fan of his music genre, I'm not surprised he would put in a good performance acting in a movie.

Xenonauts is currently being given away as part of GOG's summer sale.

They're also hinting strongly that there's more to come:

Get Xenonauts FREE for keeps! Saving the world ain't simple, Xenonauts recaptures the original X-COM: UFO Defense gameplay for all its depth and complexity – a highly recommended play for curious fans of the X-COM reboots and series purists alike.

The Xenonauts giveaway lasts 48 hours until June 6, 1 PM UTC. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for more updates – we're not saying more giveaways are coming, but we're definitely not saying they aren't.

And they've added a dozen or so games to GOG Connect.

Skype has a US calling option with unlimited minutes for $3 per month.  However, it's not clear to me if this also provides you with a phone number so people can all you (called a "Skype Number") or if that's something you have to pay separately for.

Disclaimer: I haven't used Skye in years, and Skype gives very little information about these features without having an account.

There are quite a few duplicate file finder programs out there designed to find files that are the same even though the names and/or time stamps are different.  I'd imagine that most of them would be able to report 'orphans' as well.

Unfortunately, I haven't used any of them in ages so I'm no position to suggest one, but I think googling for "duplicate file finder" would net you something worth trying.

Today I had a hard drive crash.. Not fun.

Weird coincidence - I had a similar drive crash earlier this week, The disc was largely usable, but apparently some bad areas had grown to the point where important files were becoming unreadable and programs started crashing.

I used robocopy to get a new disk set up that allowed me to get working again, but I didn't get a list of the problem files.  I wish I had known about unstoppable Copier.

One thing I don't understand is that the Windows Event log was mostly useless in figuring out what the problem was.  Nothing at all in the log until the very day that things got so bad I had to immediately replace the drive. Until then, the problem manifested mainly as browser crashes which are normal enough that it didn't occur to me the hard drive was the problem.  When it go to the point that I was sure there was a serious problem, all I saw in the event log were two ATAPI errors after I rebooted. I had rebooted thinking that maybe a reboot might be all that's needed to get the systme stable again, as is so often the case with Windows.

Anyway at least those two errors clued me in a little bit about what the problem was:

event 11 atapi: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort2

But I had little idea which drive was \Device\Ide\IdePort2 - as far as I can tell, that doesn't match anything in Device manager or the properties for any of the drives in device manager.  I finally figured it out by trial and error, but it seems to me *something* should just tell you which disk \Device\Ide\IdePort2 is.

Anyway, if you ever see ATAPI event 11, take it seriously.

I use Spamihilator (https://www.spamihilator.com/en/) a freeware spam filter.  It' not actively developed as far as I know (last release was in 2014), but it works and I haven't run into any bugs so the lack of new releases isn't a problem.

It has some sort of training system/tool/mode, but I don't know much about it. It seems to identify spam pretty well out of the box, and all I have to do is whitelist emails and domains that get identified as spam that I actually want to get.

There's a chrome browser extension called hashpass: https://github.com/stepchowfun/hashpass

That repository has links to some other implementations (Android, python, etc) in case you were using this or some variation on it.
