Antivirus programs raise doubts about their efficacy. What do you think instead of anti-exploit programs?
32
Your self-confidence is enviable.

malware is around for about one year before it's actually found. I guess this has not changed much by now

Yes, but an antivirus should help at least against old malware. People can even avoid antivirus as it doesn't protect against new malware, but it must be then sad to be infected by a three years old virus...

IMHO, of course.
34
I use an antivirus. It's not the best but it's surely better than nothing.

I trust more HIPS and behavioral analysis than antivirus itself. What do you think about this phrase?

Living Room / Re: How do you resist buying ever more powerful PCs?
« Last post by Giampy on July 14, 2015, 03:08 PM »
I avoid to buy a faster PC since I realized that many slownesses are not due to the PC itself. It's useless buying a faster PC when certain slownesses depends on slow Internet servers, slow software, antivirus bugs and activity, and so on.

It's like buying a Ferrari and using it on roads full of potholes...

I didn't know Lady Gaga sings jazz too. What a pleasant surprise.

Now I will try to update the driver

I forgot to replay.

I have tried the last driver for my graphic card but there is not the item "overlay".

Congratulations to those idiots of Intel who in 4 years have never thought to add that function into their chipset and/or who in 7 years have never thought to add that item in their driver. (Youtube was born on 2005, the chipset was made on 2009, the driver was made on 2012. Congratulations again)

So users like me should change graphic card.

the intention behind the 3 partitions was to make reinstalling the OS easier in the event of a disaster of some kind.

However, I currently strongly suspect that I may be trying to solve the wrong problem...because I haven't had to reinstall the OS since 2007 when I first built the machine.

Great consideration.

However we are talking about ransomware and I fear ransomware can't be stopped by limited privileges. Encrypting data is not a system operation, so I think ransomware are allowed to do it even if privileges are low.
I think limited privileges are useful against other kinds of malware only.

Another good tip - do NOT run as an administrator.  Set up another Admin account and delete privileges from your account.
Then, when you get a UAC popup, you will have to enter the admin PW rather than just hitting enter.

Yes, but it may be boring. I instead prefer to be administrator and then I start critical programs (like the browser) with limited privileges, for example by DropMyRights.
Convenience and safety at the same time.

an application places a special file or fake network connection that looks (to a ransomware program) like something it would want to access and modify...
How to implement?

Is it perhaps called virtualization?

With regard to the last comments: what you ask is just what any antivirus should do...

A personal additional note.
There are not ransomware only: I also fear the theft of my computer and its peripherals. This is why I do backups even in USB keys and then I wear them when I leave my house. I feel me rather safe from ransomware and thieves too.
(an alternative is the "cloud" of course, but I don't like it)
