I'm not discounting the project...

@pk: of course you are... ;-)

the creators of pi took strong steps to keeping their device from being another olpc-like thing to either be ignored or hijacked by big businesses like olpc was. in my daughter's school the administration openly admitted they worried about things like the raspberry. because from what they heard about it, the self-taught kids were more knowledgeable about them than most teachers were. so where would their math and science teachers fit in with something like that? that is a question which begs a even bigger question. ;-))
and don't even get me started on what their attitude towards the Khan Academy is.

people who make their living supporting microsoft environments seem to be very much for it now that it's a done deal. as are those people who like anything as long as it's new. my company's IT people are calling it 'job security' for the next two years. the rest of us where i am still want to be convinced. and we still don't want to have to use a touchscreen to get the full benefit. ;-)

Living Room / Re: Why did it never occur to me.. You can wash a keyboard in water.
« Last post by Gwen7 on November 23, 2012, 07:40 AM »
a couple of squirts of formula 409 or simple green cleaner and a gentle scrub with a soft nail or facial brush, followed by a wipe down with dry and then damp paper towels will give you the same result without going thru the heroics of dunking the entire keyboard. but dunking it does work as long as you take care to be sure it's completely dry before plugging it in. i learned about that when my niece dropped a full glass of cola on my keyboard at home and i figured what the heck? i soaked it for a few hours in my kitchen sink with tepid water, rinsed and drained it and let it dry for about a week. worked just fine. even the backlighting was still ok. :-)

General Software Discussion / Re: Software Charity?
« Last post by Gwen7 on May 30, 2012, 08:35 AM »
To be perfectly honest, I just don't have the time to run around trying to find XYZ and needs software ABC.

So, the basic question is, is there already some kind of charity organization that does all the running around?

It doesn't sound like there is... Oh well...

i do a lot of work with charities and causes. so I hear from and meet a lot of people like you who legitimately want to do some good - but remain personally uninvolved for whatever reason. it's almost like a variation of noblesse oblige where somehow sending off a fat check is all that is needed to make a difference. well guess what? it's suboptimal. and charities that are primarily interested in getting contributions or donations without involving the donors (usually the really big ones) aren't always the best groups to get involved with. wish it were otherwise. but it's not. :-)

some of what you do could work well with something like this: www.gngnca.org

why not see if there is something like Guitars Not Guns where you are. it's always best to start local when it comes to charity giving and branch out from there. :-)

it's nice to be given the option of not using a ribbon bar.

but it also seems to be totally ignorant about open and closed quotation marks. there is also no "smart quotes" option afaict. this can be a real problem if you use quotes a lot. submitting anything using the "inches" sign instead of proper quotation marks brands you as an amateur. and some publications (and university instructors) will summarily reject a manuscript that doesn't use the correct symbols. something to be aware of.

it is handy. But it has two major flaws afaic. 1- it wastes too much screen space with that huge panel on the right hand side. a menu, string of icons, or a ribbon across the top would be better. 2 - you can't completely delete a list once it's created. understandable in a group situation. but unnecessary and annoying if you're a single user. my other major concern is that it's free. i always worry about getting too vested in something without a price tag. I always worry they'll suddenly start charging and the price will be higher than what it's worth to me to keep it. i'd rather have to pay up front, or know what the non-free version will cost *before* i get too far into it. but maybe thats just me. ;-)

this may have something to do with it.

A new Microsoft patent points towards Skype becoming equipped for lawful interception, which could be important as the service grows up to challenge traditional telcos.

The patent was filed back in 2009, but published* last week and picked up by Computerworld. Titled "Legal Intercept", it covers one way in which a VoIP-based communications system might enable a call to be intercepted and covertly recorded, naming Skype as one of the services to which it could be applied.

link: http://www.theregist.../29/microsoft_skype/

this way microsoft can put a backdoor in skype without acknowledging there may be one in windows too. now microsoft can cooperate with government snoops without admitting they have somehow compromised their own operating system's security. and they can blame linux if it ever blows up or gets hacked.

win-win :-(

« Last post by Gwen7 on May 03, 2012, 07:09 AM »
some people are more comfortable in the give & take of a discussion. others are only happy with a soapbox and the floor completely to themselves. much of Matt Gemell's concern seems to be about his always getting the last word in. which is fine. but his argument is self-serving and contradictory in places.

if you don't want to allow comments, don't enable them. but spare me the sneering and lame justifications. especially when you're quick to create strawmen, and take strong issue with somebody using the term 'bully pulpit.'

if the shoe fits...

methinks Matt Gemell doth protest a bit too much.

i wish you the best of luck Stephen. i hope you don't give too much weight to the naysayers. and i'd ignore the cynics too. it's important to remember that those who try and fail still get more accomplished in their lifetimes than those who already *know* what isn't possible.  :-)

i tried ordering it earlier @ $119 as it displayed. once in the cart it was showing @$370 however. I think the 'please call' is because that unbelievable low price was a typo and they're having p/r woes over it. too bad. $119 was a total no-brain buying decision. :-))
