Giveaway of the Day has a long comment thread on Flash Renamer, most of it saying why would you pay for this when so many good free equivalents are available.  The author commented he first released it in 1999.  I'd be surprised if much competition existed then.  I.e., his business model was probably fine in 1999, it's subsequent developments that make it look in ill health.  Yet Flash Renamer is still good enough to appeal to some folk...

What's the Best? / Re: Newsreader programs
« Last post by rjbull on September 21, 2007, 04:54 AM »
I use xnews - it's fast, works both for online and offline reading.

iphigenie,

From Xnews online manual:

It has pseudo offline features such as header storage, but if you need true off-line capabilities, use Agent, Gravity, or something else.

Offline reading???

LaunchBar commander is my first choice for "static" things like programmes

I'm trying to get used to FARR, but for the everyday application launching LBC is quicker by far[r] (sorry  :-[)

There's a bit been said about applications that have a key hook, I wonder what the possibility of FARR implementing "universal" ears so that it could use text input from any window not just FARR's??

It certainly would be quicker to just type calc(3*6) somewhere and have another application do the calculation, well that's not too difficult with AHK or AutoIT anyway, but my point is just typing in an application is quicker than going to the toolbar, etc, etc.

Perry Mowbray,

Don't forget that FARR remembers what you've been using, and puts the most recently-used programs first in the list.  You can also weight the scores of different programs/links or whatever to change whether they appear high or low in the list of results.

As for calculations - that's Mouser's fc plugin, that ships with FARR 2.0 Alpha!

[16:07] <srikat> In my work, I have to do a lot of copy/paste
[16:07] <srikat> so was wondering if there's an easy way to copy and paste
[16:07] <srikat> like, if I select some content and move my mouse to say left top corner of my screen, it should copy
[16:07] <srikat> right corner top should paste
[16:07] <srikat> is any such program available?

Can PowerPro do this?

sri,

From PowerPro's Help file:

The *Clip command is used to work with the clipboard. Powerpro has commands to copy text or a file to the clipboard, to copy the clipboard to a file, and to clear the clipboard.
Furthermore, Powerpro has a clipboard history function: it can track text as you Copy it to the clipboard and can subsequently display a list of such text items on a Clip Menu. If you select an item from this menu, the selected item is recopied to the clipboard and optionally pasted. Click here for more details on clipboard history tracking.

The built-in clipboard commands work with the first line of text on the clipboard only.  The clip plugin, described below, can work with the full clipboard.

[...] the thing I like most about DirectAccess (and to a lesser degree ActiveWords) is the ability to simply type an abbreviation, word or phrase followed by a trigger and having a file or a program open up (or boilerplate text inserted, etc.).  [...]  I *should* try running with FARR only. [...]

Darwin,

If you do that, won't you still have to use DA or something else for boilerplate text?  Or is that now included in FARR?

Giveaway of the Day - Flash Renamer: September 20, 2007.  Normal price $19.95.

This is one of the ones mentioned in Zaine Ridling's Great Software List and has been mentioned in various DC threads.

Flash Renamer is a time saver for people with large amounts of files, eg digital camera owners, webmasters & media collectors (music/images/movies). It renames many files at once, so called batch or bulk renaming. With Flash Renamer you can automate thousands of file renames in a single click!

Rename filters include set casing, MP3 renaming, find/replace, set attributes, add & crop strings, sequential numbering and an advanced format function.

Haven't read this thread, so apologies if this is stale news: the UK magazine Amateur Photographer has lately been recommending Picture Window Pro as a low-cost $89.99 package "that in some respects rivals Photoshop CS3 for functionality," albeit "you may struggle with the interface at first."

Are there any similar better free programs that brings up a menu by simply mousing over a region of the screen?

PowerPro can do that (amongst an astronomical number of other things), depending on how you set it up.

Does this form exist on your computer as a form?  I.e., is it something that gives you fields you can tab between?  If so, then you could use RoboForm, or KeePass, or one of the many clipboard utilities like ArsClip that have a "form mode" for filling in forms.

If you start with a blank screen, you could still use a clipboard utility, or (probably, as I haven't tried it) Mouser's Form Letter Machine here at DonationCoder?

« Last post by rjbull on September 14, 2007, 08:22 AM »
Nir Sofer's ShortCuts Manager (shman) is a partial solution:

ShortcutsMan displays the details about all shortcuts that you have on your desktop and under your start menu.

It includes hotkey details (e.g. what owns them)  where they are set in Windows, but it obviously can't know what you have set in a hotkey program, or which hotkeys the foreground program uses internally.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: KlipKeeper (A FARR2 Plugin by hamradio)

The more I think about it, the main reason I never really use clipboard extenders is because they lack a stack option.  Most of the time I want to copy some things, then paste them in some order.  LIFO, FIFO, the option would be nice.  Normal extenders make this tedious by always having to chose which clip you want.  But, if you could copy a bunch of clips, then paste, paste, paste, no re-selecting, no pop-up menus once you got started... this would be awesome.

kfitting,

The old free version of ClipCache, 1.41, lets you define a pair of hotkeys that let you step up and down through the clip list, popping up a tooltip as you go so you can see where you are.  You press Ctrl-V when you get to the right one to paste it, as normal.  I haven't tried recent shareware versions of ClipCache.

ArsClip, also free, has a form mode, which seems to be fairly similar.  It also supports keystrokes and commands in its permanent clips, so you can automate formfilling, send dates, etc.  Disclaimer: I haven't tried either feature.

In fact I wrote this program once for myself, but it didn't have the option to delete files, only to view them, so now I added deleting and that's it.

TPReal,

Please will you consider adding a README file to the archive, briefly saying what the program does, where it and the necessary libraries can be downloaded from, and what the license conditions are?

Thanks...

Try this simple program, I think it might be what you are loking for. You load a directory, then there's a list of all text files which you can browse and delete (not edit).

This looks very like a Windows-ized version of PC Magazine's DOS utility FileCtrl.com.  Is that where the inspiration came from?

How about the possibility of change between all apps currently running, including those which reside in the system tray? I know some task managers currently provide this functionality, showing all windows "drew" by Windows, and allowing to bring to the front those which are hidden, including app in the systray.

If that's done, I think showing hidden windows should be optional.  If I run ShoWin originall by Robin Keir and now owned by Foundstone, I find a  load of invisible windows that aren't immediately helpful.  For example, I run Magic Notes sticky notes program, which turns out to make all its notes hidden windows.  I wouldn't want FARR to find those by default.

I use KeePass and RoboForm (the safenotes feature) to store important stuff like serial numbers, accounts, etc.

Sounds like you're already suited, but you might like to look at MemPad which is a small, fast, portable, tree-style notekeeper with encryption.

I use TheBat! successfully with Yahoo! UK Web mail.  I can't remember now, but you might have to go into your Yahoo! account and set it up to use POP3.  Works with Gmail too, again after setup (AFAIR).  I don't have a Hotmail account.

Brahman,

Oops, I should have read "Replies to your posts" first, because I just posted about Recuva in this thread!

There's also CyberNotes: How to Recover Deleted Files for Free that someone mentioned on DC before, which lists several utilities.

For undeletion, I don't think Recuva has been mentioned yet - see Appaholic's blog post.  Freeware - well, donationware  8)  by the CCleaner people.

For getting stuff off damaged drives, there's Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier, mentioned on TinyApps, though I didn't have much luck the only time I tried it.

You could try TextView (freeware) by Florian Balmer.

Also Lister, Total Commander's "F3 viewer," has been split out and offered as a freeware.

If I could select a hotkey to mark a link unread before I migrate away from it this wouldn't be a problem.

I realise that you've looked at WebSite-Watcher (WSW), so the following may not be news...

In WSW, to toggle a link read/unread, press Ctrl-M.

Another useful feature would be a context menu item or a toolbar button instructs Check&Get to check just my hot sites. This way, I don't have check them all (I have 216 sites that I track) and I don't have to manually select the hot sites from amongst my 20 or so folders.

WSW has a HotSites folder, where you can copy URLs.  Just press F9 on the folder and it will check the entire list (though I don't think it does nested subfolders).

Another request is to add the ability to monitor changes to FTP sites. This would be a big time saver, though I realise that it would require that Check@Get have some sort of facility to use my credentials to log-in.

WSW has a login system.  Hasty disclaimer, I have not tried it.

Is it possible to have Check&Get ignore parts of web pages for the purposes of reporting sites as changed but still have those changes highlighted, so that when the part of the page that I AM monitoring changes and I am alerted to it, I can see what else has changed as well?

From WSW's Help file;

With a filter you can ignore specific parts of a page to prevent false update notifications.
If a filter is defined, WebSite-Watcher will compare the filtered content of the new version with the filtered content of the old version of a page to detect updates.

:)

Another thing I'd like to be able to modify is when the time cycle begins, so I might set it to check a particular site at 6 am, rather than just specifying how often it is checked. Quite a few of the sites that I monitor return errors and I have to manually reselect them and check for changes. Is it already possbile to set a delay and then have Check&Get automatically recheck them? If not, could this be added? It would be very useful.

Not sure if WSW can do that natively, but it has its own scripting language with constructs like getting the current time and date, and waiting until some time, with flow control statements, so it should be possible with a script.

I'd like Check&Get to automatically display the first highlighted change in a page when it opens the snapshot up in the browser tab and then, at the press of a hotkey, move to the second change, and so on. Website Watcher has this feature and it is extremely handy.

Need I say more?  8)
