Hehe, I think one problem for Firefox may be that you have about a million extensions/toolbars loaded. :D Do you actually use all those?

You note what applications are using memory but not which are consuming CPU? Maybe you can tell us which applications are using the CPU most when this happens. Otherwise it's shooting in the dark to give advice. :D

Yeah, I did that, and I liked what I saw. But I'm not likely to be visiting those pages just to see those. No biggie. *shrug*

Probably so, though I wouldn't like to truly judge it before I could try it out. I definitely think the previously mentioned touch-screen UI had more promise. I think perhaps the fundamental flaw in logic here is assigning too much value to the physical manipulation, positioning and other cues of physical organization. Or perhaps more specifically in not recognizing what analogs (or replacements/enhancements) there might already exist in UI's for these functions.

So it's cool research but yes we have yet to see a truly usable/useful 3D GUI that actually enhances productivity rather than just providing eyecandy. Is it possible?

Ok, but that page is so much to read, it's overwhelming. It'd be nice to have it presented to us in little snippets. ;) So is there any chance to have an "ad" feature for full members too? I know, it's an odd request. :D

Living Room / Re: new Futurama series! finally!
« Last post by JavaJones on June 24, 2006, 01:33 AM »
:o !!! Good lord, can it be true? I sure hope so! Futurama has (somewhat ironically - more in a moment) become one of my favorite cartoons over the last year or so. This has me really excited, I must say. :D

It's funny because when it was actually on the air I didn't really think much of it! I saw a few episodes while it was still on the air and chuckled a bit, but it didn't really stick. A friend of mine was really into it and used to watch it at his girlfriend's house all the time, but I seldom saw it, and it never really grabbed me. After it was cancelled I happened to be living with someone who loved the show so I watched more of it and it didn't take long before I was hooked. I've now watched every episode at least 10 times (no, really). Zoidberg is my favorite character by a mile - I think he's completely hysterical - but I really love almost all of them. It's a wonderfully quirky show. Some folks on /. also pointed out the character development as the show progressed which I agree is a big part of why it's cool. Characters get older (at least to some degree), have girlfriends/boyfriends for long periods of time (aside from Maud's passing in The Simpsons there hasn't been much cross-episode romance there), and progress is even made on long-term conflicts (like the Fry/Leela romance).

So is Futurama better than The Simpsons? Yes, it's better than Simpsons *now*. Old Simpsons? Maybe not. But you know, they're both Matt Groenig shows, they are both weird and violent and yet oddly touching and endearing. They both have characters who are really just bad "people" in many ways, but are really good at heart and make you love them (Homer, Bart, Bender, Hermes).

One of the things I love about Futurama is the diversity of characters. Almost everyone is rather likeable IMO too. The same can be said of The Simpsons of course, but I think some of the Futurama characters are more unlikely and thus (IMO) more surprising and fun to find likeable.

Anyway, bottom line whether you like the show or not I think most can agree that there are far worse shows on TV that should have been cancelled before it. It joined the ranks of many of my other favorite shows that were cancelled well before their time - Family Guy and Firefly being the most notable examples. It's good to see that with Family Guy and now Futurama coming back there may be hope for other shows with enough fan support. Let's hope Firefly is next! And then Airwolf. ;)

Living Room / Re: Recommendations for good external hard drive solutions?
« Last post by JavaJones on June 24, 2006, 01:16 AM »
For my part I'm aware of the Samsung advantage in noise so I definitely recommend them for any low-noise needs. But they *are* less generally available than other brands and they also tend to have less deals than say Maxtor or Seagate, both of whom often have very low prices with rebates on Outpost.com, for example. I've also been a bit unclear on whether *all* Samsung drives are "low noise" or if they have a special low noise type of drive. I've gone through the trouble of trying to find models in the same group as a well-reviewed quiet drive before but I don't often want to go to the trouble. If I can assume they're all equally quiet I'd be a lot more inclined to buy and recommend them. Otherwise, if their noise level truly does vary from product to product, then it may be too much work to research for anything but a low-noise PC purchase.

Hmm, I think you might want to give a bit more info on this up-front. It's actually really quite interesting and insightful. Basically the idea is that if you come up with an idea for something that you think might have unforeseeable problems (e.g. it depends on other people's code/systems that you may not be familiar with yet), then you just start coding immediately so you can (hopefully) run into the problems quickly and solve them. Then when you've done a few iterations of this exploratory, trial-and-error process, you start over with the lessons you've learned and do a proper structured (planned) version of the feature.

This technique is particularly interesting to me as I've just read the "tips for the one man programmer" article linked from here a while back and it stressed planning quite a bit. At the time I agreed with it wholeheartedly. However I think this is an interesting twist on that. It is a way to potentially combine the best aspects of the true "cowboy coder" and the more methodical, "professional" approach.

That being said I'm not actually a developer so I'm not sure how valuable my opinion is. :D I'd love to hear what some real coders think of this though.

Hm, I could have sworn I read this thread earlier, but it appears I only read the later replies thinking I had read the OP. Anyway, great mini-review! I loved hearing about the journey you went through; I think many of us can identify.

For the moment I am using Outlook for basic reminders and text files for all "to do" lists and it's really pretty cumbersome. I installed MLO a couple months ago now and still haven't gotten around to using it. I think my biggest mistake is basically assuming I need to transfer over all my existing to-do's before I start relying on it. It seems like instead I can just put any new tasks that come up into it and sort of have a split system for a while. It can't be much worse (more cumbersome) than what I am doing now. :D

DC is at its heart a great community and that is expressed nowhere else better than here in the forums. And really I think I rather like the fact that, although I can get discounts and even free software here, I spend most of my time just reading what other people have to say and trying to communicate my own thoughts. Even when free things are on offer the biggest focus is still community and that's cool to me. I do hang out on IRC a bit too, but I haven't been on my IM client as much lately as I've been super busy (took a few days off from the forums too). Hopefully I'll be back to my normal lurking self soon. :D

« Last post by JavaJones on June 24, 2006, 12:17 AM »
Yeah, I for one can't live without the "recover/restore previous session" feature and when I first tried FF the lack of it was a serious dealbreaker. I did eventually find the many extensions available that have this functionality and much more, but trying to figure out which was the best was very annoying. I like the idea of extensions but I frankly think the plethora of them that duplicate each other indicates there are serious lacks in FF's core featureset, not (as many people argue) that the extensions approach is particularly great. For me extensions are a great thing but I don't think they should be leaned on as a crutch to avoid implementing things that are really useful to a wide audience.

Has anyone here actually looked at benchmarks on SATA drivs vs. PATA lately? :D Drive rotation speed has a much, much greater impact on performance still, so quite frankly until they improve the read speed of the drive itself I don't care that much what the interface is.

Notice that the fastest drive that is *not* a Raptor (10,000RPM) is Ultra ATA. :D

Wow, that sounds awesome Carol. And then I see the massive development talent behind the Linux variants (and Windows for that matter) and I wonder why oh why can't someone make something that "just works" like anymore? Let alone something that is truly *elegant* as it sounds like RiscOS was. *sigh*

I've long had a dream of building my own computer platform. Some of the ideas I had about 15 years ago popped up in IBM/Sony/Toshiba's CELL, but so far I'm not really impressed with the results. Basically I figured that to really ditch legacy like x86, etc. you'd have to have so much development power that you could essentially design radically new hardware, write a radical new OS for it, *and* develop all the basic necessary software for it, *plus* emulate the major existing systems (because your hardware is so fast and OS so efficient, right? :D). OK, it's all pipe dreams, but it was a nice dream. ;)

Josh, great to see you are also here on DC! I should have known with an actual intelligent post/review like that. :D I would love to discuss this more as obviously I have a lot of thoughts on the issue. Unfortunately I'm quite pressed for time at the moment but I will come back to this thread and post in more detail soon, I promise. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Why is so much software cracked?
« Last post by JavaJones on June 18, 2006, 08:32 PM »
Carol's response is very much along the lines of what I was thinking in reading Rover's posts. Great points by both, but I agree with Carol, we're talking in general about shifts in mindset and business approach here, so the change in software pricing is not occurring in a vaccuum and should be done along with other changes like creating user-to-user support services (forums, even hosted chat). These actually lower your support costs, so either your total support cost stays the same while increasing your user base, or it may even go down.

Now of course there are those users who wouldn't know to investigate the forum and other user-to-user support options, but if they're buying the cheaper product you will have fully made them aware of the limitations on official support, so there's really no room for them to complain.

I for one would definitely like to see more separate in support and actual development/production costs.
