Living Room / Idea: DoCo Research Collaboration (DoCollaborate)
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on February 17, 2012, 12:27 PM »
I am thinking of doing some research...the only problem is...I don't know what I should do it about!

It's a dilemma I know...however, it did give me an idea...

How about, we all, as a community, focus a small amount of time on one thing to do a whole bunch of research and development on, then publish our findings in the name of DonationCoder.

The project could be about anything, and seeing as I suggest we do it as a community, it would be great to see what everybody thinks it should be based on!

I honestly think, that as a big team, we could generate a whole lot of data and findings for our chosen topic.

My opinion is, that the research should be based around some sort of unsolved problem, that way, we can gain data, and adjust until the problem is solved.

I think this would be an awesome project and would certainly generate some pretty decent publicity for DonationCoder if we manage to solve the problem...even if we don't fully solve it, we might find something that other people have missed...and be able to work from there!

It's not something that needs everybody's full attention...more of, find a bit of information in your spare time, and submit it for those who are working on it and have more time to spare.

Lemme know if you think I am crazy or not!  ;D

You say you don't want to go against peoples views on donating to the site...so why not show ads for only those who are either guests, or none-supporting members.

This means, those who chose to contribute via donations, do not have to see these adverts, but those who cannot afford/do not want to for other reasons, can contribute in other forums towards the monetary upkeep of DonationCoder and its developments.

Personally, I have no qualms with seeing advertisements on DonationCoder, as I have mentioned to you in private, on several occasions.

The other advantage of only showing advertisements and such to none-donating members, is that, it somewhat gives people an incentive to donate even $1 (Many sites do "Pay to get rid of advertisements", and I have never seen it harm a community in any way that cannot be rectified through some simple adjustments) - You can also use this to your benefit; by being able to directly show advertisements from companies who come DIRECTLY to you; in order to place a banner or other type of advertisement here on DonationCoder...doing it this way, means you get 100% control of what is being shown on the DC website, without having potluck results from an Advertising Platform.

There are several players in the advertising industry that offer much bigger payments, and allow for a much more targeted output.

With Google Ads, I have found, that some seemingly innocuous term, can result in things being shown, which are totally against what you want (I found several banners, which where showing content of a sexual nature)...And, although Google resolved the issue very very quickly, the damage was still done (The image had already been seen by the users).  I'm not saying that this is something that WILL happen to everybody who uses Google, and it was quite awhile ago, so they may have tightened up the system...but obviously, if your not in total control, you have no guarantees!

IMHO, this should be an 'as-and-when' project, as in....as and when we have time to get together and talk...opposed to the "This WILL be out at 19:00 every Monday" type thing.

Even when doing the radio shows, I had to heavily rely on Auto-DJ for those times when I was called away for unexpected reasons...or purely couldn't be bothered hosting that night.

Its a bloody good idea though, and I am sure a whole lot of people here would enjoy pitching in and listening to the talks :)

Dead project?  :(

No!  I still want to try it.  I'm not comfortable with my setup right now.  I've already purchased like $200 of stuff.  It's the website work that is the most difficult for me.  I don't know how to embed my icecast stream into a simple html page.

I already have some notes about you for talking points.  Hope you don't mind me nosing around!

You could use Sam Broadcaster, that allows for you to record and broadcast the stream, and also automatically generates output files for PHP and HTML based websites, which also both connect up to your chosen Database (If you decide you want to share you music collection with people) :P

Failing that, try Shoutcast, as you can use some free service like "listen2myradio(dot)com" and use their plugins to add it to your website.  Very simple.

Alternatively you could also just broadcast using icecast, and embed a media player into your site, which will connect to the correct IP and Port of the stream (IE: http://1.1.1.1:8000).

I could help with most of these issues (Done a whole lot of Internet radio in my time ^_^) - You're more than welcome to PM me for any help or if you have any questions!

I would also love to see these notes :D

Living Room / MIT launches online learning initiative
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on February 15, 2012, 08:25 PM »
'MITx' will offer courses online and make online learning tools freely available

MIT today announced the launch of an online learning initiative internally called “MITx.” MITx will offer a portfolio of MIT courses through an online interactive learning platform that will:
organize and present course material to enable students to learn at their own pace
feature interactivity, online laboratories and student-to-student communication
allow for the individual assessment of any student’s work and allow students who demonstrate their mastery of subjects to earn a certificate of completion awarded by MITx
operate on an open-source, scalable software infrastructure in order to make it continuously improving and readily available to other educational institutions.
MIT expects that this learning platform will enhance the educational experience of its on-campus students, offering them online tools that supplement and enrich their classroom and laboratory experiences. MIT also expects that MITx will eventually host a virtual community of millions of learners around the world.

MIT will couple online learning with research on learning

MIT’s online learning initiative is led by MIT Provost L. Rafael Reif, and its development will be coupled with an MIT-wide research initiative on online teaching and learning under his leadership.

“Students worldwide are increasingly supplementing their classroom education with a variety of online tools,” Reif said. “Many members of the MIT faculty have been experimenting with integrating online tools into the campus education. We will facilitate those efforts, many of which will lead to novel learning technologies that offer the best possible online educational experience to non-residential learners. Both parts of this new initiative are extremely important to the future of high-quality, affordable, accessible education.”

Offering interactive MIT courses online to learners around the world builds upon MIT’s OpenCourseWare, a free online publication of nearly all of MIT’s undergraduate and graduate course materials. Now in its 10th year, OpenCourseWare includes nearly 2,100 MIT courses and has been used by more than 100 million people.

MIT President Susan Hockfield said, “MIT has long believed that anyone in the world with the motivation and ability to engage MIT coursework should have the opportunity to attain the best MIT-based educational experience that Internet technology enables. OpenCourseWare’s great success signals high demand for MIT’s course content and propels us to advance beyond making content available. MIT now aspires to develop new approaches to online teaching.”

OCW will continue to share course materials from across the MIT curriculum, free of charge.

MITx online learning tools to be freely available

MIT will make the MITx open learning software available free of cost, so that others — whether other universities or different educational institutions, such as K-12 school systems — can leverage the same software for their online education offerings.

“Creating an open learning infrastructure will enable other communities of developers to contribute to it, thereby making it self-sustaining,” said Anant Agarwal, an MIT professor of electrical engineering and computer science and director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). “An open infrastructure will facilitate research on learning technologies and also enable learning content to be easily portable to other educational platforms that will develop. In this way the infrastructure will improve continuously as it is used and adapted.” Agarwal is leading the development of the open platform.

President Hockfield called this “a transformative initiative for MIT and for online learning worldwide. On our residential campus, the heart of MIT, students and faculty are already integrating on-campus and online learning, but the MITx initiative will greatly accelerate that effort. It will also bring new energy to our longstanding effort to educate millions of able learners across the United States and around the world. And in offering an open-source technological platform to other educational institutions everywhere, we hope that teachers and students the world over will together create learning opportunities that break barriers to education everywhere.”

I'm pretty sure it would be covered under similar terms in most Western Countries also...seems like something that should be as private as possible, especially if data can be linked to specific people.

Nothing is ever 100% secure :)

The basic rule of thumb is...if its online...people can access it.

Best not to think to much about it...but also best to write some pretty long privacy policies and disclaimers to avoid any possible legal actions from break-ins :)

That's what mouser's WLC is but without the simple

 ;D ;D ;D >:(

LOL

+1 Ath!

I will be adding an "open in SC" feature -- I just need to finalize the details and make sure it's easy for people to turn off (never was just an option in previous versions by the way).

Pretty easy to do, just 2 simple buttons, one to add the registry key, one to remove it xD

I have a few custom Context Menu items done this way :)
2487
the reverse of this would be cool...sends a backup (raw shot) to a separate folder before u get to editing

Lets vote mouser for President...no more tax, just donations to the government haha xD

I see, so it's good to live in the EU then :tellme:

So long as you don't see any Americans on holiday trying to keep you from looking at their phone as they change SIM cards after paying cash for their expensive dye job/haircut and dark glasses.

Going into an Internet café thats an 'illogical' distance from their hotel ^_^

Also:

"Are overly concerned about privacy, attempts to shield the screen from view of others"
DO NOT READ
STOP READING MY STUFF!

"Always pay cash or use credit card(s) in different name(s)"
...I often use my mrs's CC to pay for transactions...she generally has more money in her account

"Act nervous or suspicious behavior inconsistent with activities"
erm...dunno what to say...yeah...erm....im gonna go over there now!

"Are observed switching SIM cards in cell phone or use of multiple cell phones"
I have 2 cell phones, and often use other peoples o0

"Travel illogical distance to use Internet Café"
...How far is "illogical" and what if I happen to go there, because I prefer the service, or the coffee is better?

"Evidence of a residential based internet provider (signs on to Comcast, AOL, etc.)"
w00p, I have several internet connections...does this mean imma blow stuff up?

"Use of anonymizers, portals, or other means to shield IP address"
So loggins on to my VPS from a public PC so I can browse without limits or firewall restrictions makes me a terrorist?

"Suspicious or coded writings, use of code word sheets, cryptic ledgers, etc."
NNJ CD8 NE( JDM £N& NWEIN NN00023 x 2

"Encryption or use of software to hide encrypted data in digital photos, etc."
So everything must be open source, by order of the FBI!

"Suspicious communications using VOIP or communicating through a PC game"
Wow...I tell people I am going to kill them about 8 times a day in games...pretty sure im talking about GAME killing, not actual murder...but who knows *evil laugh*

"Identify license plates, vehicle description, names used, languages spoken, ethnicity, etc."
^^ lol whut?

"Request specific room assignments or locations."
I need a kingsize bed, on the top floor, with a sea view...OMG I WANNA SHOOT PEOPLEZ

"Use cash for large transactions or a credit card in someone else’s name."
Didn't I answer this already?

"Arrive with unusual amounts of luggage."
...I have a wife...what is unusual?

"Make unusual inquiries about local sites, including government, military, police, communications, and power facilities."
What is considered to be unusual? ... Can I no longer say things like "Is that big white building, the White House?"

"Refuse cleaning service over an extended time."
I will not be woken up at 7am by ANYBODY

"Use entrances and exits that avoid the lobby."
What if I dont want to use the lobby!

"Abandon a room and leave behind clothing and toiletry items."
Unlikely...what is more likely is "Leave no toiletry items cause you stole all the towels"

"Do not leave their room."
So...someones wife kicks them out...they go to hotel and spend 5 days crying, only to find the FBI kicking down the door? - Sounds like a fun week  :-\

"Change their appearance."
So I can no longer change my hairstyle, clothing, or shave...or get any more tattoo's, or piercings...

"Leave the property for several days and then return."
No longer allowed to go on holiday?...Damn!
2494
They wanna go that far...wow...nice to know people with a residential internet provider are now terrorists...LOL

Lets all starting EVERYBODY for minor INFRACTION ON THIS LIST...I am pretty sure they would soon be that overwhelmed with information, they would need to ask people to stop, so they can actually get REAL...USEFUL information...like "Theres a guy with a bomb" lol
2495
No major advantage tbh, just adds an icon to your app screen and makes it a little easier to access :)
