DC Gamer Club / Duke Nukem Games being removed from GOG.com at year's end (2015)
« Last post by Deozaan on December 30, 2015, 09:18 PM »
Classic Duke Nukem games will be removed from GOG's catalog for the new year. So they're offering the games on sale for up to 90% off (about $2.50 for all 4 games). See the quote below (emphasis added):

The Duke. Men want to be him, women want to be with him. The manliest of men, the ultimate male role model. He's been kicking ass on GOG.com for years, but on December 31 2015, Duke has to step out to get more bubble gum. On that day, all Duke Nukem games on GOG.com will be removed from our catalog, but we are in talks with the new rightsholders to bring them back as swiftly as possible. That's why we bid you a farewell for now, Duke: with every Duke Nukem game at 90% off as a bundle, or -75% individually.

[...]

With the start of the new year, Dragonshpere will no longer be a free game on GOG.com due to new publisher agreements. If you haven't claimed a copy for yourself, make sure to do so by December 31, 22:59 PM GMT - afterwards the game will be regularly priced at $5.99.

Get the Duke Nukem games here, and get the free Dragonsphere game here.

you have an android device don't you?  You might try Google Translate.

I gave that a try. It didn't help.

It didn't recognize most of the text, though it did pick out a couple of words such as "multi" (which could also be translated as "many"). But without knowing if it's Japanese or Chinese, I wasn't sure what to trust.

This reminded me to check my netbook. It is still on Build 10240, but Windows update says it has an update available for 1511 10586. It's currently downloading. I'll find out what version number it ends up at when it's done and report back.

I upgraded it using the 10586.0 ISO and then let it update.

I just finished the update from Windows Update and it's at 1511 10586.36. So now both my Win 10 Pro x64 desktop PC and my Win 10 Pro x86 netbook are at the same version.

A boy asked his bitcoin-investing father for $10.
Father: $9.82? What do you need $10.08 for?

:P

In other news, I'm considering giving away a few dollars worth of bitcoin for a white elephant exchange. I figure it meets the requirement of a "cheap" gift while still possibly being interesting and having the added benefit of helping spread adoption of bitcoin. I found this website which allows you to generate paper wallets you can print off and hand out.

Microsoft really needs to stop trying to be "cute".

I opened my laptop this morning to the messages:

  • "Hi."
  • "We've Updated your computer"
  • "All your files are right where you've left them"
  • "We have some new features we are excited about" (something like that)

The bad thing?  "Hi" didn't stick around for long.  Neither did the second line.  After I looked up, I saw the third line.  And it stayed there, unresponsive for over 5 minutes!  Thankfully, I knew that I'd told it it could install, so it didn't freak me out too much.  But some people are going bonkers when that comes up, and doesn't give any other information.

Thankfully, I changed it so that it has to ask me in order to restart my computer for installs.  I was notified that it needed to restart, and scheduled it for 3:30 AM.  That sort of straddles the line between leaving it on, and giving them full carte blanche.

That message *did* scare me, however.

Again, Microsoft needs to stop trying be "cute", and err on the side of being clear.

I read a rant on Facebook where someone said he saw those messages and thought his computer was infected by ransomware. e.g., he was expecting something along the lines of "Your files are where you've left them... but you'll have to pay $XXX to get them back!"

I thought he was just trolling for the sake of Microsoft-bashing, since from the very beginning of Windows 10 (and probably Windows 8) Microsoft has been using similar messages during installs/updates. But after reading your experience, I'm starting to feel it's more plausible that he was being sincere (albeit exaggerating somewhat due to frustration).

If you don't like the cuteness, watch out for the new BSOD screen. It shows a sadface emoticon! :P

I have a netbook with Win10 Pro x86 on it ... and it's stuck at v10.0 Build 10240 with no pending updates.  Think I'll have to reinstall that.

On the desktop x64 they are but I've just upgraded the netbook x86 (it doesn't have deferred updates) and it's now sitting at 10586.14 with no pending updates, same as the desktop.

This reminded me to check my netbook. It is still on Build 10240, but Windows update says it has an update available for 1511 10586. It's currently downloading. I'll find out what version number it ends up at when it's done and report back.

With no pending updates, wouldn't have thought there'd be that much difference between Home & Pro.

I'm on Pro and have the latest version.

Did you defer updates?

I haven't really followed the story closely, but here are a couple of points about the story I feel are often overlooked/ignored during the media's sensationalism/outrage:

  • Nobody thought it was really a bomb. He got in trouble for perpetrating a "bomb hoax." (Whether it was an intentional hoax or not is another story.)
  • He didn't create the clock. Odds are he didn't even solder any parts together to make a functional clock out of various parts. Evidence suggests he just took the guts out of an old digital clock and stuffed them into a pencil box that looked like a briefcase... which he then, for some inexplicable reason, wrapped in wire so it would be hard to open when the alarm was going off in the middle of class?

I only know this stuff because I used to be into the console homebrew scene (as a "consumer," not a hacker--I'm not that educated) so I follow some hackers on Twitter, and just yesterday I was scrolling through the tweet history of Marcan. Here's his take on the matter, compiled into a single Storify:

I have Windows 10 32-bit installed on my Netbook. It runs like molasses, but so did/does Windows XP/7 and pretty much every Linux distro I've tried on it.

The only common denominator in your endevours is the hardware you run each OS on. With that in mind, it is very likely that your hard disk is a very big contributor to the slowness.

I put an SSD in there about a year ago. It's still awfully slow. :)

Runtime Broker is currently sitting at about 12MB RAM used and 0% CPU. Sounds like your issue could be related to SAR or some other rogue/unoptimized program.

Blimey. I don't know why, but I had assumed that Win10 only supported 64-bit (i.e., not 32-bit).
Maybe there's hope for my old 32-bit Dell laptop yet...

Interesting. As I was reading about the news, I kind of had the feeling that he seemed very full of himself, and like maybe he was trying to con people into thinking he was Satoshi. But I'm not sure how much of that was my own intuition or the way the article(s) I read on the subject were written.

Cool to see BTC going up.

Meanwhile, some new information suggests an Australian man named Craig Wright invented Bitcoin (along with his now-deceased friend David Kleiman) and is the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto.

Not long after that information was published, Mr. Wright's home was raided by the Australian authorities:

Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Bitcoin story with out a bit of drama thrown in for good measure. That said, The Guardian is reporting that Wright’s home was raided by Australian police following Gizmodo’s published report.

More than 10 police personnel arrived at the house in the Sydney suburb of Gordon at about 1.30pm. Two police staff wearing white gloves could be seen from the street searching the cupboards and surfaces of the garage. At least three more were seen from the front door.

Guardian Australia understands the raids are not related to the claims that Wright may have been involved in the creation of bitcoin, but are related to an Australian Tax Office investigation.

Interesting news indeed.

And since this information about Mr. Wright have been published, almost all of his social media accounts have been erased or made private.

Screenshot Captor / SOLVED: Windows 10 OneDrive hijacks PrintScreen hotkey.
« Last post by Deozaan on December 08, 2015, 01:36 PM »
I noticed for the past month or two that ScreenshotCaptor no longer would work when I pressed PrintScreen. Instead, I'd get a notification that my screenshot was saved to my OneDrive. No matter how I configured ScreenshotCaptor, I couldn't get it to take a screenshot using PrintScreen as a hotkey.

Weird.

After finally mentioning the problem to mouser today, he quickly found a link with some suggestions that led to a solution. The solution is pretty simple: Right-click the OneDrive icon in your tray, select Settings, click on the "Auto save" tab, and uncheck the "Automatically save screenshots I capture to OneDrive." Click the OK button and then close/restart OneDrive.

DisableOneDriveHijack.png

That last step of shutting down OneDrive is imperative. It's not enough to just disable the setting. OneDrive must be shut down completely and optionally restarted if you want OneDrive to do its OneDrive stuff.

If restarting OneDrive doesn't do it for you, then I have read that a reboot will do the trick.

the older guy whose name I don't know because I haven't seen any episodes with him as the Doctor, not counting the one where he's the new regeneration at the end of the episode.

Peter Capaldi.  I hear he's had quite the career as a distinguished thespian.

Thanks!

More trivia: Peter Capaldi currently plays Doctor Who, but he also played a WHO Doctor in World War Z. ;D

A question for the Who fans.
Giving the Doctor twelve transformations / or in total (or something) was a brilliant concept when it started because it "In story" built in when an actor had to / chose to leave the role, as well as the adjustment period of each switch.

But now we're on the 12th incarnation, is the series hitting "franchise fatigue" like Star Trek did and need a rest, or should they make an "explosion of exposition" and find a way to just add more? How will the core fans deal with the break in mythos?

Um... possible SPOILERS ahead, but technically the last Doctor (Matt Smith) was the 12th and last regeneration (because one time he regenerated but didn't change the form of his body... or something) and they made up some stupid plothole/loophole to get him to regenerate one more time to the current (?) Doctor... the older guy whose name I don't know because I haven't seen any episodes with him as the Doctor, not counting the one where he's the new regeneration at the end of the episode.

P.S./Trivia The older guy playing the current Doctor, as well as the actress who plays Amy Pond, were both regular folks in the episode about Pompeii back when David Tennant was the Doctor and his companion was Donna.
