Living Room / how wide can you stretch the width of your windows?
« Last post by nudone on November 08, 2006, 07:38 AM »
i'm testing webpage layouts and i'm curious as to how wide you can actually stretch the width of a browser window (i've noticed that all my windows behave the same - not just browsers).

i'm not talking about the the 'maximised' window width - i mean, if you arrange a window on screen so that it is almost the maximum width of your monitor - and then you move the window over to a side edge of the screen so that most of it's content is hidden off screen...

...how far can you then drag the side edge of the window so that the window is widened even more?

i can only resize the window so that it never has more width than the horizontal width of my monitor. okay, this seems sensible but i'm sure i've had windows in the past that i could resize wider than the width of the monitor - maybe it was when i was using dual monitors(?)

could someone please confirm whether they can actually resize a window so that it is wider than the physical pixel dimensions of their monitor (or not).

thanks.

I also vaguely remember a similar thread, like "what are the best programs you use?" - I can't find it, maybe someone could post the URL to it here?

My favorite software! What's yours?

unfortunately, wirenote doesn't like working with 'dialogmove'.

when opening a window (regardless of it's size) with a note associated with it, dialogmove somehow confuses the note with the opened window and makes the window jump to the cursor.

i suppose i could get used to it but quicknoteplus didn't have this problem - nor did jgpaiva's little autohotkeyscript.

for my file versioning (i do a little hobby webdev), so I need to keep track of file versions. but have not looked at Subversion, although it looks promising!

i use TClockEx (http://www.rcis.co.z...e/tclockex/index.htm) for my taskbar clock.
it has this neat feature: (my own configuration) i clock on it, and it copies the following to my clipboard:
061104-011122
Year. Month. Day. - Hour.Minute.Second.
makes it so much easier when manually searching my file directory for a previous version.

i do that file method only when saving a big change. not all file saves.

that's a nice idea.

well, it works (in the basic way it cay at the moment).

i'd not thought about the actual mechanics of what the program should do - like the 'ok' button to close the note.

i'll try to make a few useful suggestions to make the program 'user friendly' or of greater worth than using something like 'quick notes plus'.

1. easily create a new note that is attached to the current window - select command from a tray icon menu maybe.

2. delete a note.

3. editable text inside the note - not sure what autohotkey can do but maybe the notes could just be text files that open in notepad.

4. probably helpful if the text of the note was saved inside a text file regardless of how point 3. above worked.

5. hotkeys to create/delete/hide/store a note.

6. automatic saving of text in a note when it loses focus.

7. other things that would start taking the 'note' simplicity into the realms of more sophisticated programs.

thanks for doing what you've done so far, jgpaiva.

edit:
just checked again how 'qnp' works.

rather than selecting to add a note from a tray menu - create the new note first then from that note select from a menu which open window you want to attach it to (this can be several currently open windows).

(having said this - since mouser created 'tap tap' i don't have such a big problem with 'quick notes plus' as i can now use the winkey to create a new note - which reminds me to add hotkey function to the list above.).

sounds risky, but that's only because i've never tried such a thing.

aren't there any similar boards listed that would do what you need - something maybe a step up from what you have already.

i don't think you mentioned which msi board it is, Carol, but you could take the ebay cheap fix approach.

http://search.ebay.c...erboard_W0QQfromZR40

for the price they are, i'm sure it will be the cheapest solution - you could even get a second replacement board just in case the first one dies.

just read this, great work by Dallee.

i'm sure i'm beyond the babysteps idea but it's good to take a minute and ponder on whether you are letting yourself slip back into the old routines - if you're finding the old chores starting to build up again then it's time to have a rethink about your level or control.

mouser will be able to answer about the screensaver image format - the images started out as jpeg's but perhaps they get converted to bmp's.

cody obviously isn't as brave as he likes to portray.

General Software Discussion / Re: Repairing Windows XP (to restore AutoPlay)
« Last post by nudone on October 31, 2006, 12:48 AM »
is anything guaranteed to work?

i've recently set up a new system for a friend - all brand new hardware, brand new xp pro - does it autoplay? nope.

it will if you stick a usb device in but it won't with cd/dvd regardless of the optical drives you use.

so, if this can happen with a new install, are you going to face a similar situation if you try a reinstall of your system?

only one way to find out.

i wish i had spotted whether the autoplay worked up until a certain piece of software was installed but it's too late now.

i wish you all the success i can, superticker, and if you do find the solution - please, please, please, post it here.

(i admit i've not tried those methods you've been through so i'll have to give them a go.)

rather than taking google's adds, how about taking sponsors or adds from companies that sell products that DC does approve of - just on a trial run, of course.

i know it is almost anathema to think in such a way but an add is an add after all - is there anything special about using google's adds over a company we respect?

« Last post by nudone on October 28, 2006, 03:11 PM »
thanks for that, mrvampi. it was a good try.

but the 'survival' program i'm after was shown during the 70's - probably the 60's and maybe the 80's. after that it might be the same actual wildlife footage but it wasn't the early used tv theme or title sequence.

the flutes i speak of had a more 'trippy' sound and so where the visuals - like lines moving across the screen fading in and out.

the search continues...

Living Room / desperation - any uk readers know this old theme tune.
« Last post by nudone on October 28, 2006, 09:31 AM »
this isn't the forum for it but i'll ask anyway...

does anyone remember the children's program 'picture box' that was shown in the 70's?

i've finally managed to get the theme tune for it but it's not the best quality in the world.

my desperate question is: does anyone know what the them tune is called or do they know what instrument(s) it was played on. i always thought it was a pipe organ of some kind (church organ or smaller fairground ride thing) but now i'm beginning to think it sounds like steel drums.

the website tvcream doesn't know much about it.

also, am i losing my mind or did there used to be a nature program called 'survival'. it had a theme tune played on flutes - i can't find any mention of it anywhere online. i'm after that theme tune also - anyone remember the show?

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it
« Last post by nudone on October 28, 2006, 06:34 AM »
i've just had an idea that i think is gridmove related. it could be a new app but i think it could be a useful feature for gridmove - maybe the next step. see what you think, jgpaiva...

rather than moving the windows so that they 'snap' into predefined grids by first moving them to trigger 'zones' how about this - as an EXTRA feature:

1. you have a few program windows open - currently visible on your desktop. some larger than others, the user has just moved them around a bit so that they can see enough of the contents of each window as they need to.

2. the user then hits a hotkey combination - or selects from a menu - or maybe uses some kind of trigger zone to drag a title bar into.

3. the program windows that are currently visible then automatically resize themselves so that they try to maximise their area without overlapping another program window. each window tries to maintain the same kind of percentage/ratio of screen area that they had, whilst going through the the auto resize process.

so. the idea is: you set your windows out in a quick 'rough' layout with gaps in between them (so you can see the desktop through the gaps), then you hit the hotkey (or whatever) and the windows automatically resize themselves so that they try to close the gaps between each other - hiding the desktop below.

i hope you like the idea, i have no idea if it would be simple or a nightmare to implement. it appeals to me because if it worked well it would actually remove the need to have predefined grids (though these would still be useful). the grid would, in effect, be created on the fly to accommodate the current program windows that were open.

if possible then overlapping windows would also be capable of being 'intelligently' resized and moved. you could (hopefully) just open a could of windows move one the the left and one to the right of the screen - hit the hotkey and the two windows would stay on their respective sides of the screen but maximise their area.

i know that windows operating systems will already tile horizontally and vertically any windows that are visible but it won't try to lay windows out in a patchwork grid like display - it can only tile across or down.

any thoughts?
