General Software Discussion / Re: Userbar Generator: Cool Freeware
« Last post by mouser on December 15, 2007, 03:51 PM »
i was also thinking of some seals/badges/userbars maybe to celebrate our fundraiser next week that had the text:
"I Fund Software at DonationCoder.com"
something like that, that people could feel good about and would emphasize their role in supporting the development of software here by their donation.

you know what might be cool is if.. when we setting on a good userbar look, we could upload the config file, with text like:

"DONATIONCODER.COM MEMBER: XXXXXX"
where user could put in their username and make clicking on the bar link to their profile on donationcoder..
could be something fun people could use on other forums, etc.

i knew josh was gonna hit me for dcupdater.
note that it's an option in dcupdater, though i suppose i should make the default to not popup and grab focus.

when you say you didnt manage to make it work, can you elaborate?

Here is your page of drivers from the toshiba site:
http://www.csd.toshi...rpn=PSAEGU&ct=DL

You want to download the most recent of each different driver.
Check your bios version as well and upgrade your bios if it is older (MAYBE -- only if you feel like an adventure).

Any pc that can run vista can run xp well.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: a Profile-able Workdesk Desktop
« Last post by mouser on December 14, 2007, 04:25 PM »
I'm starting to warm up to this idea, as distinct from a virtual desktop tool.
A virtual desktop tool (like virtuawin, which i like), is nice for running multiple programs on different virtual desktops, etc.

As I see this request, it's more of an occasional switching between modes of working.  So when you switch you want different icons, wallpaper, etc.  It's not about running multiple programs on dif desktops, just about setting up different desktop environments suited for different modes of working.

Nice find nontroppo, though it is not free.
I'm sort of warming to this idea as a coding snack.. i'll post on the request thread (https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=10819)

The general approach with such stuff that i recommend is:

1) backup current hard drive image so you can always go back to you current setup (i.e. use a drive imager like Acronis, etc.)
2) backup any of your data files in an easy-to-access way.
3) visit the website of the computer manufacturer and find and download all drivers for your computer (important if you have a laptop since there are commonly special drivers for the network, touchpad, etc.)
4) do a clean install of the new operating system, wiping out the previous one (i.e. never try to do a formal "upgrade")
5) install the drivers
6) do a driver image of the new clean install.

Toshiba is a good laptop maker and their drivers are easily available on the web -- you should have no problem with xp on that machine.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Start menu links open as text files?
« Last post by mouser on December 14, 2007, 12:05 PM »
please make a note of which lnks dont open properly.
i can try coding an alternative way of launching the .lnk files and we can see if that fixes it.

i'd love to know why that's happening.. sounds very bizzarre.

« Last post by mouser on December 14, 2007, 10:51 AM »
that is really bizzarre and i've never heard of it before.
it sounds like maybe your .lnk files have somehow been configured to open as text files, though maybe your file manager is overriding that, hiding the problem?

if you use a 3rd party file manager, try windows explorer and see what happens.

as a workaround, you could try going to the options of FARR and on the general tab UNCHECK "Always launch shortcuts directly instead of resolving links"
24744
this has actually been requested several times as a core farr feature, but maybe it would be good to do it as a plugin?
plugin to let farr search recently opened files, e.g.

ps. it would be nice to have some icons for these.. hamradio made and setup all the icons for the built-in aliases maybe he would be willing to make them for these.

there are 2 directories where alias files go, one is AliasGroups\Installed and one is AliasGroups\MyCustom
you should definitely have already had myaliases.alias in the MyCustom\ subdirectory.  if you didn't then i need to figure out why.

Living Room / Re: Applications Stealing Focus...
« Last post by mouser on December 13, 2007, 07:04 PM »
The tricky thing is that if they don't take focus, you have to actually switch to them to dismiss/handle them if they don't take focus.. so i'm not sure that the alternative is any better.  maybe something like a sound and delay should proceed a pop up so it can steal focus but still give you warning to stop typing.. i don't know..

you should clarify -- you mean applications that "pop up" unexpectedly and take focus.  not applications that come up when called.  right?
