Find And Run Robot / Re: Alias sharing
« Last post by mouser on December 18, 2007, 02:21 AM »
Just a note that the new preferred way to share aliases is to attach a .alias file, rather than using the old >>> style pasting.

hahahaha.

back to this site..

this site is a bit boring.. i wonder if there is a similar site where people can actually stake out a location and place a little house where they want, etc..  anybody know of one?

i'm not saying i want a full involved rpg game or simcity, just something where you can "do" a little more in terms of establishing a presence.

I'm writing a program for NANY 2008 which i would like to interface with Samuraize in order to give the user the option to have the desktop show some occassionally (not often) changing stats from the program.

I don't have much experience with Samruaize but it seems like it might be a good solution for me.

So basically i can have my program create a text file somewhere whenever the stats change.  And i can have it run some commandline "update signal" exe if that helps, or send a windows message, etc.

The text will be something like:
Stat Value 1: 39847234
Stat Value 2: 7894
Stat Value 3: 34999
Stat Value 4: 9843453

But i'm basically looking for some help figuring out a general way in which a program can tell samuraize to display a text file in a nice user-customizable way on the desktop.

Anyone with any experience with this? I don't know if it's as simple as configuring an existing samuraize plugin, or writing a new one.

Or maybe even someone has a different suggestion instead of samuraize?  Perhaps a lightweight coding snack program which shows text on desktop would be something someone wants to write to avoid needing samuraize?

Developer's Corner / Javascript Gamelib
« Last post by mouser on December 17, 2007, 05:12 PM »
It would be fun if someone made a game with this for the NANY 2008 challenge.

Scott Porter made a popular library for creating Javascript Games, called the Javascript Gamelib. It provided relatively simple routines for animation, sprites, collision detection and control. It meant games programmers could concentrate on designing games for websites instead of spending time rewriting the basic building blocks.

I have 6 loop / sample cds for Acid (in original boxes):

  • Ethnicity
  • Vince Andrews Solos and Sections
  • Essential Sounds Vol.2
  • On the Jazz Tip
  • Street Beats by poogie bell
  • Funky xtreams 1

I'd like to send these all to one person, or maybe send 3 each to two people.

I ask only these requirements for those who would ask for these:
  • you already use acid, and actually have a use for these
  • you be an honorary/supporting(donating) member of donationcoder.com *prior* to this posting

The first two people (or one person if no one else requests) who reply meeting these criteria will get them.

ps.
if anyone has any other stuff sitting around they want to give away please start a new thread and go for it, might be nice to spread some cheer and clean up the attic

General Software Discussion / Re: My Stupid Windows Question for the Day!
« Last post by mouser on December 17, 2007, 12:34 PM »
I would think long and hard before changing the names of these directories..

As you say, you can rename them and windows will adjust to the new folder names..

But you may have older programs that are not coded well that get confused, OR you may have programs that remember when the directory was called one thing, and now that it's changed they will still be looking in the old place.

nosh said exactly how i feel as well:
I just ignore the 'My' series and save all my personal data at another location. Lots of apps feel free to create their own subfolder within these anyway and I wouldn't want my personal data getting mixed with all that junk.

In other words, the default "My Documents" and other such folders are useful as places where some programs autocreate subfolders and files.  I prefer to make an *additional* directory for my personal files and leave the "My Documents" folder completely alone -- i never go in there and never save files in there.

It also helps to have a dialog extender tool as well to help you quickly navigate between your favorite folders.

I don't see your post as a personal attack -- but i'd also understand if doublewitt decided that you had both made your points about what you are unhappy with and left it at that.

currently the only way to exclude extensions is to give them high negative scores as mentioned; i have been thinking though that in the search directory list it might be nice to be able to specify for each directory which file extensions to include or exclude.

Wow, looks like Ralf hit the jackpot for you CodeTrucker, as that guy says what you have been saying:
To get this to work, you have to pretty much forget the Toshiba site. It is mostly unhelpful and will send you over the edge. Instead, one must dig down deep into the operating system. One must manually edit driver inf files. One must deal with trying to find a driver for "Unknown System Device". Fortunately, some unnamed kind soul has done all the hard work for you.

I have some concerns about this section as well, and it was always clear that there was real potential for things like we see here in this thread.

And the point that this section could be used by people to make up stuff to attack the competition is troubling.

If this section gets out of hand we will have to reconsider it.. Right now it exists because the consensus of people on this forum seems to be that they want a place where they can talk about problems they have with companies, without it cluttering up the main sections of the forum.  I don't really view the decision as one i should be making -- it's up to the people here whether they want such a section.  As long as it remains generally civil I think it's ok.  People do need a way to express their frustrations about companies, and warn their friends.  If a company has a forum that is usually the best place -- if they don't then a forum like this is definitely needed.

As far as only allowing one side of the story -- I do think this thread shows that this is not the case.  I would welcome both sides to comment on any complaints here (again, as long as they do it in a civil manner).  I think it's always important for both sides to have their say.

I'm not sure how to respond to this thread..
It got personal and ugly quickly..

Both sides clearly feel mistreated and like they have to defend themselves against what they see as unfair behavior from the other.

We try hard to be a place where both end users and software developers can communicate, so there is bound to be some tension occasionally where there is a feeling that one party has wronged another.

I can only remind people that we really try to keep things civil here and encourage people to take the high road at all times.  And when everyone has had their say try to refrain from piling on -- we have intelligent readers here who can will read all points of view and make an intelligent decision about what the arguments mean for them.
