FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: New C# FARR Plugin: FARREnviormentVariables
« Last post by mouser on December 28, 2007, 07:41 PM »
coool :)
another nice plugin would be one that lists all registered environment variables and their values and lets you search; click on one to copy it to clipboard (note farr has a copytoclipboard command you can all).

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: New C# FARR Plugin: FARRTunes - iTunes control plugin
« Last post by mouser on December 28, 2007, 04:46 PM »
Latest version i tried from vitalyb worked like a charm (not sure if he's uploaded it yet to the link above).
it's a beautiful plugin, really wonderful.

Some ideas for future development:
  • 1) command to show all songs in current playlist to choose from.
  • 2) option to not start itunes until the plugin is first triggered (right now it launches itunes as soon as plugin/farr is started)
  • 3) leave the farr window showing the current song after changing songs.
24603
can you try changing skins (or disabling skins) and then restarting FARR, see if that fixes.
24604
i dont know why some people get font size problems while others dont.. do you have large fonts enabled on your windows?

one workaround for now is to go to options and customize the font settings and row heights.  you should be able to configure it to look right.

Only a few days left before NANY 2008 deadline!

Authors please create a new thread in this section of the forum (even if your program isnt ready for download yet), and include:
  • title of your program in the topic subject (along with short description)
  • describe the program
  • attach a screenshot
  • attach a download if it's ready -- message me for webspace if you want it!!
  • or link to your website if you've put it on your own website

it would only be 1 extra press of enter, but ok fair enough.. it would be easy to make it an option, so if user still wants alt+# and enter to launch, they would use ctrl+# or ctrl+enter to queue.
24613
i wonder how people would react in general if we made it always the case that when you hit alt+# or enter, it didn't launch right away by default, but always just "selected" or "queued" the item triggered and then presented options like:
1) LAUNCH
2) QUEUE
3) ... context sensitive stuff here.

using a special hotkey would work too and leave enter to do the launch.. or we could make it an option i suppose.

i actually strongly considered writing point motivator as a farr plugin instead of a standalone tool.

if anyone actually ever uses point motivator i'll make a plugin so you can interact with point motivator data from farr.

General Software Discussion / Re: Google knol
« Last post by mouser on December 28, 2007, 02:22 AM »
Anil Dash talks about why this is (another) conflict of interest for google, though a clever business move to grab more advertising dollars from wikipedia-like traffic.

http://www.dashes.co...-theory-of-mind.html

Worse, Knol shares with Google Book Search the problem of being both indexed by Google and hosted by Google. This presents inherent conflicts in the ranking of content, as well as disincentives for content creators to control the environment in which their content is published. This necessarily disadvantages competing search engines, but more importantly eliminates the ability for content creators to innovate in the area of content presentation or enhancement.

I like the idea of sharing revenue with authors.. and Google consistently does good technical work.

But repeatedly google has demonstrated that they want to get their hooks in and dominate every aspect of the internet for the sole purpose of serving advertisements.  The fact that their search engine is so dominant and so dramatically governs the income made from advertisements means that the entire content of the web is warping itself to please google and get better placement in search results.

The game is to get their ads on all high-traffic sites (wikipedia for example), or when that doesn't work, create a replacement service that they can put ads on.  All of this would just be a little troubling on its own -- but the fact that they run the largest search engine on the planet, which purports to be neutral, but has every incentive in the world to send people to sites which run google ads, is a blatant conflict of interest.

I don't doubt that google will do a good job with the content and technology behind knol pages.

But when the google search engine has to decide between the ranking of wikipedia result page and a knoll result page, and no one on the planet is allowed to understand how google magically scores the sites -- surely that's not acceptable.

I've written about this before on the site, and i think the solution is really clear.  It is a huge conflict of interest for a search engine to be making a profit from sending people to some pages instead of others.  Period.  We should not be supporting such search engines.

Put another way:  It's just not ok for the same company to be the foremost authority for ranking websites and at the same time making billions of dollars based on ranking certain sites above others.  That is what google is increasingly all about and it's not ok.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: LaunchBar Commander and Quick launc
« Last post by mouser on December 27, 2007, 12:15 PM »
no.. but..
you can dock LBC on the bottom row of the screen but it will take up the whole row, it won't merge into the Quick Launch bar.
you can also minimize LBC to to the system tray so that it works like a menu.

maybe you could do something similar as what Ryan set up in the CyberNet News forum, with ads being displayed for non registered members

this is indeed exactly what we used to do.

again my instinct was that this was not helpful.  for 2 reasons:
1) it was yet one more thing to have to explain, and just made things more complicated for people to understand.
2) i think it was counter productive.  the ads weren't annoying enough to get people to register to remove them, and i think they therefore thought "well if i don't mind the ads then i shouldnt have to donate"

I am extremely grateful for any advice, suggestions, critiques, etc. about ways to improve DC's financial health -- i'm not good with such things and i'm very thankful to have any help in thinking about such issues.

Veign,

I actually don't remember any strong opposition to the ads, maybe one or two people who had a negative reaction, but most people took a middle of the road stand.

Also don't forget that i already wrote code that lets supporting members turn off all ads on the site.
And in fact we could easily let anyone (supporting member or not) turn off ads for themselves and it wouldn't have a noticeable difference on any ad revenue.

In short -- if we put ads back, we can very easily let anyone who doesn't want to see ads turn them off.

So the only question then is what psychological effect it has on visitors to the site.  My gut feeling, and one of the reasons i've never left ads on the site for long, is that people might be less likely to voluntarily donate if they see the ads and think we are making money from ads.. And i'd rather have more supporting members who are vested in the site and feel good about funding it, vs. anonymous ad-supported clicks, even if the ads bring in a little bit more money. i just though that the community as a whole would be healthier.  But it's a tradeoff.
