FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Locate32 Plugin for FARR by Okke

Dunno if writing a separate plugin directly accessing the locate databases would be that much of an advantage over piping locate.exe

sure it would, and it would let you:
1) avoid the startup overhead each time you did a search
2) be able to search on the fly as you type

now that you guys (both google suggest c# and javascript fscript) have mastered web page grabbing, how much longer till we get 2 holy grail plugins:
1) rss fetcher w search ability
2) generic web page regex parser (let user configure web page to grab and how to parse it into items with regex)

in both cases one extra complication is that it would be nice for a user to be able configure multiple sources which could be selected.

e.g.:
frss dc keywords..
where the first thing after the rss is the label telling the rss plugin which configured rss to grab from.
(just typing rss might list the known rss feeds).

how nice would that be :)

in the second case, it would be similar, so that you could configure it to grab a page and display result(s) either as a list or in richedit mode.
this could be used to grab almost anything from a web page (weather, news, etc).

Maybe someone in the future will write a plug-in that gets results directly from Locate database;

i think that this would be a great idea.. since the locate source code is available, it could be done and would bring indexed searching directly into FARR. if the plugin is written in C++ i could even incorporate the code into the main FARR codebase.

sorry i probably should not have been the one posting this bug report, since it works like a charm for me :)

maybe the problem people didnt even have .net2 installed.
i'll let them post about their problem -- i think it just wasn't showing in the plugin list.

jpgrosen,
i think you are using vitalyb's C# sdk..

others were having trouble getting that to work on some windows machines, including myself -- i think it may have to do with beign built with the latest .net runtimes required, instead of a more conservative build?

ive gotten 2 reports that the farr google suggest plugin isnt loading, and this is what happened for me with vitaly until he uploaded a new build.

vitaly can you share with jpg how to build this for better compatibility?

General Software Discussion / Re: Print Calender on Desktop Wallpaper?
« Last post by mouser on December 29, 2007, 12:36 PM »
I don't quite understand how you can expect the screen to keep displaying a calendar when the calendar program has closed. I cannot think that is posible, unless it is saved to the wallpaper's picture file itself.

right -- i believe such programs exist -- they basically create an image of background wallpaper with calendar on it, save the image, and set the wallpaper to it.

then they have to set themselves up to be run once per day or month so that the wallpaper image is updated automatically.

the other option is to use active desktop to essentially display an html/web page calendar.

just to reiterate, although the screenshot i showed about of 1st clock showed a nice fancy looking clock.. i'd be happy with a tray clock that looks identical to default classic clock, but just with me able to customize the text.
24586
So you don't need any fancy calendar options etc.?
not at all.
if you want to be nice, make an option so i can configure the program to launch on a double click, then i can configure a 3rd party calendar tool to trigger.

f0dder - GO. FOR. IT.

  • yes, it absolutely must be in the tray, replacing the normal clock.
  • i need to be able to set the replacement text (let me specify a standard strftime() format string would be fine), don't need a gui.
  • bonus: let me set font/style.
  • i will be running this in win classic mode not with the normal blue bubble skin mode so either it needs to be "transparent" to the background color or have customizable background color.

betaclock does not work on x64.  Also not working sarbyx trayclock.
24589
I've been experimenting with installing Windows XP Pro x64 edition.

This is a native 64 bit version of windows that allows the operating system programs which are specially compiled for the platform to access larger amounts of memory.  A 64-bit version of Vista exsits as well.

You can read a few discussions about the pros and cons of 64bit versions on DC threads here.

I'm not sure at this point that there is really much reason to try installing the x64 version.. It doesn't magically give you improved performance and there are still some incompatibility issues.

But there may be a few occasions when you would want to try this version, such as when working on some heavy computational software which can use more than 2gb of memory.

I installed it half out of curiosity, and half because I do occasionally do some work on machine learning stuff that can use as much memory as it can grab, and half because on a new computer I have the 32bit version of windows refuses to see my 2nd stick of ram, leaving me with less than 2gb accessible memory instead of the 4gb I have installed.  Apparently this is a known problem having to do with memory addresses and a "conflict" of sorts with the graphics card.  The hardware issues are beyond me and in my opinion all motherboard manufacturers should be locked up in a mental health clinic for the insane things they do.

As an aside -- I actually had to figure out how to slipstream the WinXp x64 installation cd with the service pack#2 before I could even get it to install on my computer because the motherboard (Asus P5WDH) uses a hard drive controller that the winxp 64 installation cd bluescreened on every time.  The SP2 slipstream solved that problem.

Anyway, back to the issue at hand.. I thought we could use this thread to talk about any software compatibility issues, workarounds or alternate software replacements for programs we like for win 64bit.

I'll start with one software replacement report:

I'm a big fan of putting the date in the bottom right of the system tray.  I've always used the free program tclockex for this.  It's old but it gets the job done simply and effectively.

However, it does not work on x64 versions of windows.  So began my quest to find a replacement that did.  There are many replacement tray clocks (clock tray skins, alfaclock, etc).  But I only found one that works well on x64 (it comes with special x64 drivers): 1st Clock.

1st clock is quite good -- it looks nice, it's customizable, it has alarms, can show some extra stuff, etc.  Worked perfectly with xp native skin, and with some customization of the font it looks perfect in classic skin too, which i prefer for the simplicity of it.

clock-tb-vista.gif

Not free (at $29 i'd say it's on the bit on pricey side for these utils), but.. still if you are using x64 and you need the date in the tray like I do, this may be just what the doctor ordered.  Unless someone knows of a free equivalent for x64 or wants to try coding one?

Anyone else want to share some x64 software recommendations (or horror stories)?

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Personal Event Log
« Last post by mouser on December 29, 2007, 10:40 AM »
some feature request ideas:
  • ability to set a text label from the tray, that would be used on subsequent log items. so it's always still just click to add a log item without any request for additional info, but you can change the label added to each log item when you desire.
  • use a more pleasing tone -- the system beep you use sounds like my bios beep warning me the cpu is about to explode from heat
  • global hotkey that can be used instead of clicking tray

This thread shouldn't be about helping any one person on the site.

The absolutely best thing you could do to help the site, is to figure out something you can do without needing my help, that would add to the community here, that would improve the site in some way.

i think we should keep the place special right now and free of ads.  some other time we can consider it again.

all things considered, i'd rather have more help running the site than more money from ads.  there is just so much administrative stuff to do that it leaves me less time for coding..

veign is right that there are many wonderful ways the site could get better and do more stuff but that we are reaching the boundry of what we can do without more of an influx of something.  right now the bottleneck is really time.  money is just a substitute for that since with more money coming in, it's possible to devote more time to DC.  but i'd give my right arm for someone to really jump into the site and help run things and let me concentrate on coding.

that error means your browser did not download the entire file.  try again.
i can't figure out why this is happening to some people.  is it a problem on our server?

why not try using a good free installer like Inno Setup.
