nothing appeared in tray..

the new version killed it successfully when i tried to exit.
(ps you didnt add a menu item to kill now in tray, you changed it so it kills if you exit it from the tray -- make sure to change that).

--

is it possible that the situation is more difficult than i thought, and that windows tries to shutdown programs SEQUENTIALLY, and so that if it tries to close the stuck program before it gets to yours, yours will never even be called?  :(

 :-* :-*

That makes me very happy to hear.
I hope to hear lots of suggestions and feature requests.

Why couldn't this be an added feature to Process Tamer?

that is quite a good idea really.
since i really want to keep PT tiny and free of extra features people don't need, it poses a bit of a problem.
however, i think maybe the solution is: plugins for Process Tamer.
i have stuff i'm working on for the next couple of months but when i finish i may consider this.

jgp -> KillProcesses did not work for me.  didn't kill the processes.
i think it would really help if there was a menu item called "kill processes now" so we could test it.

btw just so we are clear -- it's not sufficient to send these processes a message requesting that they close, since that's what windows does already.  they need to be forced to die.

an alternative option to trying to kill it from the ahk script would be for us to use an existing commandline process killer and just have the ahk script invoke it.

UrlSnooper / Re: downloaded, started, found url, now what?
« Last post by mouser on January 02, 2008, 02:07 PM »
johnny, there are several programs that can download files to your computer, some are free and some are commercial.
the program you need will also depend on what kind of file it is.. flash (sfv) , realmedia (rm), windows media (asf, wmv), or from youtube, etc.

so your first step is to identify the file type.  then you can look for a program that can download such files.  if you post the file type someone may be able to point you to a program.

like most areas, there are usually some good freeware alternatives, so dont just jump and buy something on a whim.  but if you are going to do a lot of downloading then you might consider buying the program that works the best for you.

GREAT STUFF

id rather swap the message box for a timer without a message box.
oh and just to make sure -- this program should not trigger the killing if it's just me manually exiting it.  it should only trigger at system shutdown.

Developer's Corner / JayIsGames.com Flash Game Programming Competition #5 Starts
« Last post by mouser on January 02, 2008, 12:47 PM »
JayIsGames.com gets posted about regularly here on DC.  We were linking to Jay's great game reviews way back when it was just Jay alone reviewing occasional games.  It's wonderful to see the competitions on the site bring such great new talent to light.  If you haven't checked out some of the past entries, they are as good as they get.

So here is competition #5.  If you ever wanted to make a flash game, now is the time:

For the 5th Casual Gameplay Design Competition, we are asking for entries that incorporate this theme: UPGRADE. You are free to interpret that any way you choose; however, the extent to which your game addresses the theme is left up to the competition judges to decide. Use your imagination and be creative. We will select the best entries submitted to represent the competition just like we have done before. Impress us with your game design and production skills and you will score fame, recognition, prizes, as well as a proper review of your work by the JIG Casual Gameplay review staff.

ps. Cody, the mascot bird/duck of DonationCoder.com is dying to be in a game, so keep that in mind if you are looking for a starring character for your game :)

Fantastic  :-* :-* :-* :-*
I'll test and report.
The only thing i'd love to request extra is to be able to set a delay before it starts killing the processes.  So i can set it to wait for 5 seconds or so before doing the terminations.. just to give these programs a chance to gracefully shut themselves down.

looks like there is a slight bug in the program or something, you have 3 bars at top that look like they should be both considered "untagged".

It's a new year so you know what that means, right?

It means it's time for the second annual "Best of the Web" retrospective roundup!

Over 46,000 posts were made on the forum in 2007, and from those posts a collection of some of the most entertaining discoveries and debates have been featured in our 2007 edition.

It's an impossible task to select just a small number of sites and essays to feature, so a lot of great ones were bound to be overlooked.  Please share your views about any particularly glaring omissions.

Thanks to Lanux128 for helping me prepare this.. It was a lot of work.

Site/Forum Features / The DC Coding Snacks Page
« Last post by mouser on January 02, 2008, 12:19 AM »
The "Coding Snacks" section of the DonationCoder.com forum is one of the most unique and populars areas on our site.

Normal users post (often unusual) requests for small utilities, and coders who hang out at the forum try to implement them as freeware programs for the public.

We've created a special page where all released coding snacks, past and future can be found:

Site/Forum Features / The DC Mini-reviews Page
« Last post by mouser on January 02, 2008, 12:12 AM »
One of the things that members of the DonationCoder forum do a lot is write "mini-reviews."  These are short reviews of specific programs, and they often prompt some heated discussion about alternative tools and which ones are the best.

We've created a special page where all mini-reviews, past and future can be found:

New Apps for the New Year 2008

Help us celebrate the new year with a bunch of brand new freeware programs!

It's time for the results of our annual programming challenge. The coders on our site were asked to:
  • Release a new freeware/donationware program of any kind, by Jan 1, 2008
  • It must not have been released prior to Dec 1, 2007

Some of the programs are rather specialized and whimsical, some are just a little silly, and substantial and serious.  But you'll probably find something that you find useful.

Do you have an mp3 collection? Use "WTF!? Music Info" to generate charts showing the statistics of your collection.  Do you need help staying motivated to keep to your new year's resolutions? Try "Point Motivator", an innovative motivational tool and tracking diary.

Browse and download these brand new freeware programs and over a dozen more on the NANY 2008 Release Page.

Congratulations to all the programmers who participated.  As always, if you find a program you like please consider making a small donation to the author.

Ok, if you have released a program for NANY 2008, please email me your shipping address so I can send you your DC mug commemorating the event: [email protected]

If you already have a DC Mug, you may choose anything else from http://cafepress.com/donationcoder and it will have the NANY 2008 logo on it.

Alternatively, if you already have enough DC stuff for your tastes, and need money to pay bills, Cody has authorized me to disburse $50 via paypal, or amazon gift certificate or through postal mail.  It's not much but it's something.

If you have something else you'd like just ask.

ecaradec, i'll split your question off into another thread after i answer it a bit.
we should probably have sdk questions as their own threads, but titled so they can be identified as such (e.g. "SDK Question: blah blah")

ok now to your question..
i'm not 100% sure what you are asking, could you be a bit more specific?
maybe it will help if i explain a little bit about how farr works with plugins and results.
before farr does any searching of it's own it calls the plugins and tells them the search.
then it checks if any plugins have results right away, and if they want farr to stop searching immediately.
most plugins respond at this point since they can return results without delay, and normal farr searching never proceeds.
but some plugins may need an extended time to search, and may want farr itself to be able to proceed and find files on its own.  for example if you had a plugin that searched online or and index, BUT still wanted normal results displayed.  in this case a plugin can let farr continue searching while it works, and send results as ready.

but again, i'm not 100% sure what you are saying works faster than what.

it's very elegant.. but i would say it's a bit dark, especially for a page featuring a kitchen/house.  people tend to want BRIGHT kitchens, so maybe some brightening is in order.

jim is right except scratch the words "simple as".
getting networking stuff to work can often be frustrating and mysterious.
sometimes you get lucky and it just works.. other times you can feel like you are going crazy trying to figure out why the computers can't see each other.
however jim is basically right, and there are tutorials on the web that will walk you through the process of setting up a workgroup.

suggestion:  call it something that will help truckers find it.
how about simply "Truckers Log Watch"?
