General Software Discussion / Re: User settings storage debate
« Last post by Armando on August 01, 2007, 11:04 PM »
Yes, flexibility.

As a humble "end user" -- sorry if what I say might seem dumb or naive-- what I like and want is an easy to 1-find, 2-isolate, 3-backup and 4-recover, configuration/settings file. And I wish there was a unique convention for the way settings are stored. But, too often, it seems like a melting pot of registry settings, .INI, XML or LUA in the program folder OR the user's folder. Personally, I hate the registry for storing settings -- to me, the registry, if any, should be for the OS only. I prefer the *n*x way, seems more secure too, as Josh said.

I very well know that MS Windows' registry main function is to organize in one place (since it's a database, basically) all the settings which used to be scattered all around (in .ini files or whatever) ... But it just doesn't seem like the right way to keep track of software settings anymore. Like some here seem to suggest, the same results could be achieved if all software settings were stored in the user's folder, in clearly identified files and subfolders + in the program's installation folder ? It might use a bit more HD space (but it's less a problem nowadays), but it would be sooooo much easier to backup and restore individual programs' settings** and would insure that everything is portable (I guess I agree with ethyar and josh). No?

**I don't know any easy way to save software’s settings when stored in the registry. And I don't think I'm alone in that (especially since I'm basically an end user, not a programmer): "Restoring parts of the registry is hard because the user cannot easily extract data from backed up registry files. Offline reading and manipulation of the registry (for example from a parallel installed Windows or a boot CD) is not trivial" (wikipedia). BTW : Is there a quick way for a normal user to backup only ONE software with all its registry settings (and only it's own registry settings, not the whole registry), and only restore that software with its settings ?

One idea I think should be done is that each application should give the user the option of making the application portable

IMHO, it would be good to be able (as an option...) to store settings BOTH in the program's program files folder and under the individual users profile -- that way, you're covered.

Every software should also have an option to point to (or import) the right configuration folder/file (so that one doesn't have to guess, paste stuff here and there, and pray that everything will work well afterwards).

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Re: Achieve Planner + Goals to Action
« Last post by Armando on August 01, 2007, 09:55 AM »
Sure iphigenie.

But I was not mentioning the Achieve Planner email trick as "the" great particularity, but just as a mere example of how AP deals with emails (because it *doesn't* really deal with emails natively). So it's absolutely NOT what makes Achieve Planner an interesting software, but, mostly IMHO, the ability to manage and link together tasks and projects with goals, wishes, results area, etc.

What I also like : the time charts feature, the calculation of priorities and adjusting of the "scorings" to ones preferences (in the task chooser panel); the nice and coherent tabbed interface; some of the "syncing with Outlook" ability (priorities, categories, projects, contacts) and the fact that one can customize how some the AP’s task fields will be transferred to Outlook (and in particular the customization of “user-defined” fields);  some of the exporting feature (to excel et rtf format), etc.

Reading that makes me wonder if I should just leave the PhD where it is and move on...

The uncommitted take the "Mr. Rogers" approach: They sit down, take a shoe off, talk a while, slide a sock off, and maybe, someday, they might be ready for action.
If you're not moving fast, it's probably time to move on.

Ahem...

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Achieve Planner + Goals to Action
« Last post by Armando on July 31, 2007, 07:54 PM »
I've been testing Achieve Planner (AP); I don't remember seing anything on DC about it (when and if I have more time, one day, I might do a mini review) : it's a great application in active development; + the developer is really nice and responds himself to comments. Of course, AP's got some flaws (I've posted about some of them under zarmando at AP's forum), but what are flaws for me might not be for someone else...  :)

There are 3 different versions. $49 for Achieve Planner Standard, $79 for Achieve Planner Pro, and 99$ for the Achieve Productivity Suite. (of course, there is a fully functional trial download - 30 days). I found that the Productivity suite is the real deal for anybody looking for an Outlook/Covey/Allen mix... AP doesn't do email per se, but synchronizes with Outlook in special ways (will transform emails into tasks, etc.). For a features comparison see http://www.effexis.c...ature-comparison.htm

(Right now, I’m not using AP, but might be in a few months. Am waiting for the next version. I want to see how the search function, outlook integration and contact management will evolve.)

Linked to AP, there are also these 2 web sites :  http://www.timethoug...com/goal-setting.htm and http://www.goalstoaction.com/. Some nice stuff, well synthesized. [edit : but, shall I add, a bit too salesmanish for my taste...].

Some Screenshots. (I will post some more personal ones in a little while)

I’m willing to answer questions about AP, if any. There’s also the Achieve Planner forum : http://www.effexis2.com/forum/ .

Tagging (or "keywording") is essential to go beyond current folder hierarchies (but not necessarily beyond hierarchies in general; that's a common misconception, because hierarchies are still primordial), and transcend simple and anecdotal  "word searches" -- that's why we use keywords in any good classification system.

Virtual folders (even "search folders" or whatever) could/should function in close relationship with tags.

One thing EverNote misses to deal better with bigger databases is the possibility to have multiple tabs/windows of the same database. But I'm not a huge fan of big databases anyway : harder to backup quickly (unless you use DeltaCopy or similar technology -- but even that, I found, is not always that efficient), corruption affects the whole thing if its corrupted, transfert of documents in and out (for various reasons...) is cumbersome.
2458
Zoot is for people who have an enormous amount of text they need to organized in a pretty uniquely powerful manner.

Well, I do have about 15 gb of text in various format (mainly rtf, txt, doc, djvu and pdf) I've gattered during the past 10 years for my studies, and I was never able to really test Zoot's legendary power on them [edit : not the whole 15gb, of course!! just a few docs...] -- I got the error "The Win 16 Subsystem has insufficent resources to continue running, blah blah blah...". Anyway.

Regarding EverNote… Because of some of its limitations, and because I don't like software functions duplication, I use EverNote almost exclusively for notes that, for various reasons, I don't want to classify immediatly. But I empty my EverNote database every week and file everything before it becomes out of control. So, everything else -- well, almost -- is perfectly named and organized, and instantly found with X1/archivarius, Farr/locate. I almost don't use any other applications as far as searching goes; I still miss a better tagging system though (I use tags in  filenames, it works well, but it's not optimal for various reasons — tag2find might be what I’m looking for, eventually… when its new version comes out), a good way of managing virtual folders and cloning files, other ways of displaying info, etc.

Zoot meets X1 is nice to think about, but don't bet on it.  I don't think Zoot will be an indexer of any type in the near future.  I like Archivarius for indexing.

I won't bet on Zoot meets X1...  I was not thinking of zoot becoming an indexer. But I’m a bit sick of having to import my stuff into different databases (and loosing formating and other usefull tweakings in the process) to be able to use the organizing power of some software. That's the main reason why I never really bought into any of the Ultra Recall, myBase, etc. solutions... And even EverNote, to some extent, since I only keep around 40-50 notes max in there, for very practical reason (at some point, I had 800 notes in there — which, I’m sure, is much less than other EverNote’s users — and it literally became a nightmare; I really *hated* to work with such a a big amount of “pseudo classified” notes, and now I’m pretty much back to a more conservative way of working but so very much  more efficient…). Being able to find/see everything with one or two software -- x1/archivarius --, is much more powerful. My database is my file system (the discussion went in that direction at some point in this thread -- regrettably, it was dismissed...).

And, yes, Archivarius is good : not too resource hungry, deals well with huge documents, cheap for students, etc. But as far as its features go, it really lacks at least 2 or 3 extremely useful things that X1 has : to be able to memorize searches and settings (for the various searches) AND create “virtual folders” for these searches and organize them in folder trees. So,  I mainly use X1… but always keep Archivarius there, ready to rescue.

@tomos

Normally, you'd write " monitor ", with spaces and quotes. But that particular syntaxic feature has been broken in the newest release. i've posted about it at the everNote forum. I got some answers, but nothing from the developers. (There are other advanced syntax trics you can read about in the help file, and others you won't even find in the help file -- for these you have to search the forum. Have you been to the EverNote Forum? Tons of good advices there.)

One way of dealing more efficiently with categories is to use special keyword filters. Not actual words, but abbreviations you make up yourself.

@Superboyac

How does the Zoot 32-bits deal with graphics ? Evernote is/was much stronger in this area. Graphics are not that much of a big deal for me, but we live in 2007.

"Organizationwise" we'd need something like "Zoot meets X1", but for the whole file system.

Folks might be interested in taking a look at that site, http://www.outlinersoftware.com. It's a discussion forum for people "interested in outlining, PIM, and knowledge management software."

I'm sure folks over there would be very happy to see you all!

"Outlinersoftware.com" was originally "outliners.com/discuss," a forum set up by Dave Winer in the 90s to exchange views about outliners (mainly single-pane ones). Nowadays, as well as outlining, it touches on other aspects of researching and writing as well - web clipping, pims, note-taking, editing, word-processing, etc. It has a big searchable archive going back many years. The move to a new server somewhat disrupted the little community, but it is recovering well.

DBC

I've read lots of stuff there and really enjoyed the info!
Some developers post there too (Ultra Recall developper, if I remember well?), which adds some spices to the sauce.

Thanks for the skin tip, FARR looks better without captition, but it is still thick, is there any skin to make it more more thin :) It would be perfect if FARR fit my browser captition, not covering the browser menu buttons

Maybe someone will be willing to make such a skin. I wouldn't know how to do it though.

You should also have a look at LaunchBar Commander https://www.donation...Commander/index.html.
2464
Trying FARR v2 and i love it!

But.. i want to use FARR as a launchbar, so i need it to be always on top, always on screen, it is possible but it looks like this [ Invalid Attachment ]

Don't you use farr to launch stuff using your... keyboard?  :)

farr appears and disappears when you hit the "break" key (Can also be configured to work with (Alt+Space), (Ctrl+Space) etc.). Why would you need it to be permanently there?

And you can turn the caption off by selecting another skin  : open the "Options" window, click on the "Display" tab, enable "Use fancy skinned display", choose the "slenderFARR.skn"

You could also play with transparency.

Have fun

- you told it to, at the setup: "Do you want Maxthon to often release memory?"
(or how it was phrased).

yes yes...  :)
But, still, even if it "releases memory", it still is as fast... I don,t see too much I/O activity when I switch tabs. I'm telling you : magic.  :Wizard:

i'll stick with maxthon 1.6.1

lets me use and arrange all the toolbars and buttons that i want. loads in faster than opera and firefox and just seems to have things worked out better. no doubt i could find plugins for firefox that would provide the same functionality (and more) but why bother when it will still load in slower - plus i'll have to spend all that time looking and testing the plugins. (load times are important to me because i do a lot of opening and closing; maybe that's a bad habit.)

okay, my web pages are rendered crap because of the ie engine - but not very often. perhaps i'll give maxthon 2 a try again but the beta didn't do it for me - simply depends on how much i can customise the layout...
I removed Maxthon 2 again and went back to 1.6
- but I expect to try again after the next major update.

Same thing here.

I honestly don't really see what greatness Maxthon 2 is bringing to the table. yes, it'S cute.

But I like Maxthon 1.6 better, even if uglier:

- fast
- feature full
- very small memory footprint (maybe is just a trick though... but I have never been able to find out how it does it).

I really like Firefox too, and have it installed, but rarely use it (for the same reasons nudone mentioned). Maybe I will, one day, if I install more RAM and I don't care about giving a big chunk of it to Firefox...

Wow, you guys have lots to say on the subject!  :)
I'm sticking to XP. I've thought about going Vista for a while (mainly because of some of it's tagging and new explorer features, etc.), but, like justice, F0dder and others, I find it much slower with the same hardware... for nothing much better. With XP, I can basically do everything Vista does -- and more -- but faster. XP IS faster with "normal" hardware (1.5gb ram,  1.8ghz core duo CPU) for someone who's multitasking a lot. And I don't care too much about eyecandy.

What FARR will not do on its own is let you type a string of letters without spaces and match those at different places.

Yes. I thought that was what uncontiguous meant in that context...

Personally, I don't care to much about "type a string of letters without spaces and match those at different places". I'm happy with "f f" (instead of "ff"). I usually type the first syllable of a word anyway. Faster and I don't have to memorize patterns.

Maybe the performance hit wouldn't be too bad IF there was an index? Dunno...

Find And Run Robot / Re: new launcher just released
« Last post by Armando on July 24, 2007, 11:49 PM »
In my opinion the only two options  amadawn mentioned that FARR 2 really “lacks” are the index and the uncontiguous search (but launchy lacks many features that Farr has).

So… An index, yes... and Mouser is well aware of that aspect (might even be using locate's?). But I’m sure Farr wouldn't be as great without also keeping its current search mode.  I’ve used quicksilver and Launchy, and, well, when I rename files — which I do all the time — I want my files to be available now. Not in 20 min, or after I manually reindex my HD.

Uncontiguous search? that would be nice, but I wonder if it really adds that much usability. Maybe.

Oh, and there’s the look thing. For me, if it’s functional, I couldn’t care less about the looks. And I actually like FARR’S look. Not very glamour if you use the windows default, but... Compared to other launchers, with farr I can see more files with more details (except for picture view — but then, I prefer to use something like faststone or something like that)… And I need that level of detail since Farr is also my file explorer for quick navigation.

Anyway, Farr is far from ugly -- the slenderFARR.skn is actually quite sexy -- it’s just not… flashy. But yes, a quicksilver bubbly shiny candy look might attract more people. Won't be using though. My windows still has the 95 looks...

I feel sorry for you...

I've made a clone at the 50% re-install stage and checked to see if it works - no it doesn't >:( What to do now?

What do you mean exactly... You can't use a previous image?

That's tricky.

In some cases, it's possible to use an image from and other computer. Steeladept gave me some very useful advice :

https://www.donation...49.msg61210#msg61210

Maybe he’ll know what to do if you’re stuck with an image which contains drivers which won’t allow installation??

What I did (but I had access to my old computer... and you most probably don't) :

So, on the old computer...

1- uninstall the NIC driver (don't reboot)
2- uninstall HD driver (don't reboot)
3- SHUT DOWN (don't reboot!)
4- Image your drive from a CD -- if you have access to Acronis Universal Restore, use it. But I don't know if it will make a difference or not.

After :
5- use the cloned image on the new computer

You might have to reactivate windows though.

Hi mitzevo,
Since May 19, I've tried a lot of these software.
I found that tag2find is the best one, but I'm not using it presently (I'm waiting for the next version which should do more what I need).
2475
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm spending a lot of time fiddling around with various programs, too!    :-\

Thanks for just saying that. Starting to feel like I might be the only one struggling... or the only one struggling for... nothing? Not that I haven't had any useful feedback though!

  • @ Mandork + Wiki like Solutions : You'll see that there are some posts around about ZuluPad (and ZuluPad Pro), wikidpad, tiddlywiki, etc. I really like tiddlywiki. But after some more fiddling around, I've decided that to manage text+complex tables+graphics, it's not the best solution. There seem to be ways to achieve what I want, but it doesn't look very intuitive... Or am I missing something?  :-[

  • On simple formating only VS “multimedia” + complex formatting : What I find is that there are a lot of solutions to manage plain text or simple RTF textual data,  but not that much for more "multimedia" kind of data (text + graphic + complex formatting, in my case). Unless, of course, you're willing to invest like what seems a lot of time dealing with issues and trying to make the software do what it wasn't really meant to do in the first place.  Yes, some of these solutions do offer more control, but at what price!

Now, I might sound a bit like an heretic, but, right now -- and even if that software still figures as my "not good enough" starting point in this thread --  MS Word (maybe followed by OneNote, OpenOffice and TextMaker) seems to me like the most rounded solution (and, yes, it is not LaTeX… and it doesn't know the diffrence between typefaces and fonts...).  :-[   Word does almost everything I want. ALMOST. Of course, if it was perfect, I wouldn't be looking for something else.

  • Interlude : some thoughts about a... New Generation File System Organizational Interface — NGFSOI?? (not very elegant, I know) : I believe that my problem is a multi faceted one, not only linked to "individual software" limitations, but ultimately  also to the way NTFS (and even other FS) is currently used by the OS and the file explorers. Some posts  by Spivey, jimdoria, superboyac,  nevf and nudone in the "note-taking" thread were heading in that  direction. Some quotes :
Instead of creating a database and bringing whatever I wanted into it, let the file system be that database and use the program to impose whatever forms of order upon it I saw fit.
-Spivey
https://www.donation...62.msg25341#msg25341

[…] of using the file system as the back end for the ultimate Note Taking software. It does have some excellent benefits, and addresses the interoperability issue neatly.
-jimdoria
https://www.donation...62.msg25400#msg25400

Unfortunately, like some said, that king of solution seems like a hard thing to achieve… We have software like Eclipse, tag2find (which seems to use the alternate data stream in a pretty clever way), ACDsee, Directory Opus, tiddlywiki, etc. but no unified system and interface which would allow the use of flexible categories (keywords, tags, etc.), virtual folders, file cloning, file linking, seemless searching,  etc. implemented in a very robust way.

To me that “NGFSOI” (don't laugh) would be the real deal. Vista seemed like it was going to offer something in that direction, but… it looks like it’s not for now.

I know, I'm drifting, and the solution I'm looking for right now probably doesn't require such a "radical" shift.

  • @ Jimdoria + askSam: thanks. I remember you talked about it in another thread, superboyac too, and I checked it at that time. I’ll have to look at it again. But, from what I remember  it's very expensive (as you said too), it's strictly windows (meaning that everyting that’s imported in asksam will have to be dealt with… asksam), not unicode compatible, everything has to be moved in its database to be searchable, it doesn’t deal with images, etc. BUT I’ll have another look at it. (Something like askSam would so much better if it was, like I’ve suggested, more of an organizational layer on top -- and taking advantage of the inherent possibilities -- of the ntfs fle system…)

Anyways... Sorry for that long post. I'm still searching. I'm presently testing Word + Links to a database (like Evernotes' database). I know, simple, but it could be (????) the most effective-powerful-simple-flexible-portable-etc. thing at that point.
