General Software Discussion / virtualization, lite (Gizmo)
« Last post by Curt on March 18, 2012, 09:33 AM »
Dedoimedo from Gizmo has written a fine article named Light Virtualization. It took me some to understand what it was about because I focused on the word "Light". Turns out it is "Lite", as in Cola Lite; "Virtualization, Lite".

Introduction to Light Virtualization

What is light virtualization?

How does this work?

How is this different from system imaging?

What is it good for?

What is it not good for?

Living Room / Auslogics promoting false speed tester?
« Last post by Curt on March 16, 2012, 06:00 PM »
I got an email from Auslogics promoting "inKline Global Modem Booster 8: Turbo Charge Your Internet Speed Performance", with a link saying "Test Your Internet Speed>>". I wanted to test my connection again again, so I followed the link and took the test. To my sad surprise the test results were far below the expected, 6 to 9 MB per second (download) in contrast to 25MBps, and also the upload speed was well (bad!) below, 1.5 to 1.9, against 4 MBps. So I ran to both Speedtest.net and my InternetSupplier and tested, and sure enough my actual Internet speed is as my contract has promised me: 26MBps and 3.7MBps!

Please test to see if they also will give you a false, micromized speed test result: http://www.inklinegl...embooster/index.html (scroll a little), and come back here and tell.
 :tellme:

I have written Auslogics and protested, because they're the ones promoting. I don't trust it will help to protest to inKline, do you?

Modem Booster 8 by inKline Global is a proven web acceleration software that can help you dramatically increase your Internet surfing speed.

This means you can boost download, upload and web surfing speed up to 300%, reduce web page and graphics load time, and do a lot more fun stuff online.

I have keys for 16 (older) products from Magix and Xara (Xara Designer Pro 6 being my newest) - yet I don't have any of them installed. My beef with this twin company is that even though their programs really are fine, they speak in a language that I quite often don't understand. In order to use these programs to their max, you will have to watch / read a lot of instructions, AND then even use your imagination to maybe translate back from English to the original German and back into your kind of English (??)! Yes, I often got the feeling that the translator didn't know the subject and just used some generalizing phrases "in that area".

If you take the offer and later find your inbox pested with spam, go find the proper way to unsubscribe - it works.

Another beef is of course that they never informed me that I already had the program I was buying, but with a different name (Magix Xtreme Web Designer was part of Xara Designer Pro)! But I guess they were too busy laughing all the way to the bank.

BTW: I haven't touched UAC; it is still on the second-highest level.

How on earth do you have a disk sized almost 2TB? I mean, is it inside a normal (full) tower?
Mine are both 500GB, and I was told there was no room for more.

-yeah, more and more people are encouraging me to do just that. But my UAC is set at the next-highest level, (default), so if it was preventing this batch file from running, I really would expect UAC to pop up a box and ask or tell something, not to work 'hidden'.

At first I was willing to bet it sees me as Curt The User instead of Curt The Administrator, but then I tried the Right-click > Run as admin' - so all my imagination can think of now is that maybe there is a difference between how a batch file must "be" for 32-bit versus 64-bit. ?

del /S /F "C:\Users\Curt\Documents\PLAY\*.wma"
del /S /F "C:\Users\Curt\Documents\PLAY\*.m3u"
del /S /F "C:\Users\Curt\Documents\PLAY\*.tunebite"

I have tried both with and without "quotes". The path was copied from right-click > Copy path. I have also tried from both "Library/Docs..." and from ".../Users/Curt/Docs....", and from within "/Docs.../PLAY". Some of the folders to be handled have names with spaces, others without. And as I said, I have tried merely double-clicking, and right-clicking > Run as admin'. The text file is named skwire.bat

Need more info?  :tellme:

-------
Thank you, rjbulll. Can it delete files older than just a few minutes? Or can it delete per file extension type only? The process is: I download MWA music files, I convert them to MP3, I delete the downloaded files (wma and m3u), and obviously keep the converted ones, except the '.tunebite' that the converter created. The files to be deleted are placed in various subfolders, and seldom older than a few hours.

This was working so fine with my previous 32-bit Vista, but I cannot get it to work on my new 64-bit W7 - not even if I right-click it > Run as Adm'. Must anything be different?

-I don't think is has to do with UAC; that will only warn or ask. But:

Home-Groups are enabled by default and you will find that leaving it will work in your benefit.

Sorry, I have of course been terrible bad, explaining myself.  :-[

I have no problem with UAC; I have a severe problem with some shortcuts opening a guest / none-admin version of my Internet browser or Explorer. I am the administrator and only user, there are no guests - so everything  I do must be recognized as being done by the admin; nothing must tell me that I don't have the right to save a picture in C:/filename.jpg

sorry that i haven't had time to follow up on the answers.

I AM the administrator of my PC. Guest account is not activated. The problem may be HOW various programs are installed, and/or where their shortcut is situated ("Curt-user" vs "All users"). It now #seems# to me that in general it is mostly a question of not double-clicking installation files, but right-click > Run as admin'. But I am not yet certain of this. Please teach me! On my previous computers I would always just double-click the installer, and never had this new problem.

General Software Discussion / How to become Admin' for real?
« Last post by Curt on March 12, 2012, 09:49 AM »
I remember this from when I first started using Vista, but back then I installed a certain application and, voila! I was the boss of my own computer. Now I am in a similar situation again. This time on Windows 7. "You do not have the right to save this picture at this location. Will you like to save it to the Pictures folder instead?". Such a question can make me go ballistic; is this my computer or does it belong to someone else?!!

Please help me to become boss of my own computer!  :tellme:

also:
1) Must I LEAVE the (none-existent) home-group? It gives me all kind of warnings when I start trying to leave ("no print!", etcetera), so I don't dare! I never started a home-group, so how did it evolve? I don't understand the home-group layout; has the very concept of a private, single user been cancelled?
2) How can shortcuts apparently be situated in "Public", when there is no such location?

Maybe there is a program that will automate the "become the single user Admin' of your Win 7 PC" process?
