Living Room / Re: What kind of tagging system would be appropriate for DC?
« Last post by mouser on January 12, 2008, 06:04 AM »
Also let me repeat something so that everyone keeps this discussion in perspective.  I'm fairly firmly against making any changes that would add undo "noise" to the forum.. So any tagging system should be basically invisible.  It will operate behind the scenes and just provide extra functionality for those who choose to use it.

In general my position has been that if we add a tagging system we get the NSFW filter for free and it won't affect the vast majority of users who won't ever be turning on such a block.

But i am sort of curious about something, it seems to me as if codetrucker and others who want such a filter.. would you want to block ALL posts that EVER mention the terms you've listed about in your chart, including wtf and similar acronyms?
(regardless of other content).

It may make sense to have a FoulLanguage filter that could be automatically computed from posts without requiring any human intervention.  Personally it seems to be like a very unforgiving filter but i don't know, is that the level of blocking you are interested in Codetrucker?

For what it's worth, i think the graphs are cool to look out.. sure you can debate their meaning, but i appreciate them and they are interesting.  as others have said, there are issues regarding what the right metric is to look at (radio of curse words to non-curse words over time? or just absolute # of curse words? or curse word containing threads?).

Still, i'm glad to see the charts.

I do think carol has a point though about the context of words, which is really the most important thing to me.  It's hard to make the case that one should avoid some of these words absent of some recognition of the context.

i'm pretty sure a program like this exists.. but i can't remember the name at the moment.

I think i started to answer this here: https://www.donation...05.msg93919#msg93919

I'm in the middle of some work now and so i can't dig into farr source code at the moment, but i will try to do so at the end of next week and give a more detailed reply.

From the standpoint of coding plugins however, i will say that IFF FARR is not currently updating results as they are available, i will improve that, so feel free to assume that it will in the near future.

nice.. though we should point out that there are firefox extensions that do a pretty good job of adding thumbnails to normal google (and other) searches.  Here's one: http://ackroyd.de/googlepreview/

Just open some of the existing messages in a text editor and you will see the format.  to add new ones just create new text files of the same format.

Guys and gals, please try to keep this thread civil -- i see some people arguing with each other needlessly.  Everyone is making good points, there is no need to get personal.

At this stage, a variety of ideas about different features of a tagging system is welcome.

As has been noted, I have reasons that i think an internal tagging system would be useful, and have wanted to put in such a system for quite some time.  Mostly this would be a more general system to help in the creating the blog, newsletters, and year end reviews.  The blog system I wrote is a kind of specialized restricted tagging system, and i think a more robust tagging system would be useful.

Being able to tag threads/posts for content and let people browse the forum using a tag cloud or by content could be very useful if we could get help tagging things, either by authors, moderators, or readers.

In my opinion, the NSFW tag is the *least* compelling reason to implement a tag system, at least for our forum (for others it could be very useful), but having said that, if we go to the trouble of writing a tagging system, adding the NSFW would be trivial, and offering the general ability for people to filter out threads based on their tag would be useful.  Some people could filter out NSFW threads, others might filter out programming-specific threads.

So at this point we are in the stage of brainstorming, so feel free to let your ideas flow.  Do keep in mind as has been suggested by others that eventually we will have to balance the work required to code this with the benefits, and figure out if it is something (the tagging) that can be done fairly painlessly and without adding much to the workload in terms of every day tagging.

Is DC safe for work?

I think the answer is clearly yes.

There are no naked pictures on DC forum or site.  You might find the occasional curse word here and there, and you may find a discussion of some technological issue relating to sexuality, but nothing that you wouldn't read in any newspaper or magazine.  There are probably a handful of posts on the forum in three years that refer to some sexually themed site, and link to them -- in such cases the links should clearly be marked as NSFW.

I think that's where this forum has found it's comfort zone, and it seems to be a reasonable approach, and I don't think we should try to change that.

Living Room / Web services to help you come up with good (domain and other) names
« Last post by mouser on January 08, 2008, 03:38 AM »
1. Dislexicon - Takes common words and adds suffixes and prefixes. It even gives you the meaning. This site is great for finding short domain names that look like they could be real words.

2. JustDropped - This site lets you search for domain names that have recently expired. You get a few searches for free with limited results. I’ve found that the free searches are usually adequate for my needs.

3. Word Mixer - This one lets you enter up to five words which are mixed up into new, semi-pronouncable words. The same website also has a couple other tools that are useful such as the random words tool which is hit or miss, and the mixer seeds page.

4. WordFinder - This is actually a tool for crossword puzzles, but it can also be very useful for finding a domain name.

5. DomainsBot - This search engine is geared specifically towards finding a domain name. It works best if you’re looking for a compound-word domain rather than an invented word.

6. Online Generators - If all else fails, sometimes you’ll find a gem using one of these online generators. This is usually a last resort for me though, they tend to suck up your time without out producing much.

I will have an update this week, I apologize for the delay.
24440
ps. You may be able to find an older release which does not include the toolbar.
24441
EDIT: please make sure you read the caveat at the end of this post.

I've written before about the nice multi-monitor capable photo screensaver maker (both free and commercial) at gphotoshow.com.  Today i wanted to mention a great free utility they have that sits in your system tray and let's you easily control your screensavers.

Features:
  • You can Enable/Disable/Configure your default screen saver
  • Allows you to start/configure/choose every installed screen saver without opening windows display properties
  • Starts your default screen saver with a mouse click
  • Starts your default screen saver with a hot key
  • Starts a random screen saver with a hot key
  • Automatically disables the screen saver at startup
  • Automatically changes the default windows screen saver

It's an excellent little tool, works perfectly.

IMPORTANT:
I cannot recommend this unreservedly.  While downloading a new version to install and test, i see it now comes bundled with a revenue-creating toolbar which you cannot choose not to install, although you can uninstall/disable later.  I've spoken to the author in the past, and i know he is a nice guy, but you should probably avoid this unless you feel quite comfortable removing the toolbar and uninstalling parts of this installer.  Dissapointing

Maybe someone knows something else as good and free of such trickery?

Let me make a last comment and then close this thread so we can continue spin-off discussions in spin-off threads.

I once started an academic discussion group and a professor i respect told me that most of these things fail and that you really need someone to take responsibility and basically make sure everything gets done -- that if you just hope that everyone will chip in, it won't work.

In many respects i've found that to be true, at least in the initial phases of a new endeavor.  It really does take one or two people to spearhead a project.  Things just don't get done otherwise -- most things require some concentrated effort and responsible coordinating that doesn't just spontaneously arise from a group.

On the other hand, as things develop, a project like DC grows and evolves.  This forum is now a self-sustaining enterprise and i do not view it as my job to decide the rules.  I do still think that ultimately sometimes decisions are best made by one or two people rather than putting every micro-level issue to a direct one-person, one-vote poll, not just for practical purposes, but to ensure some kind of consistency and avoid things becoming a constant campaign for influence.

But anyway i do want to emphasize that, especially with regard to this forum, it's purpose is mostly to be useful to the people who hang out here, and i view it as my goal to ensure that it continues to be so, rather than to impose my personal views about content and organization.  I do have strong opinions sometimes and i will advocate for them when i think it's important, but i think decisions about the forum should not be based on what I want but what's best for the community.

Of course it's impossible to be all things to all people, so sometimes we may have to make choices about where to focus our efforts and our attentions.

Unlocked for a little more - but please only post if you have have something useful to add :)

Hi Mary, I'm very happy you like it. I'm sure we will be able to come up with good new features.
It was designed specifically to make it easy for people to create and share item definition files so i hope you find that part useful.

As for "incorporating" it on a nonprofit or profit website, sure as long as you don't misrepresent it's origin.  probably always better to send them to our site to get the latest version.

Developer's Corner / Re: source control systems: what's the best?
« Last post by mouser on January 07, 2008, 11:17 PM »
tortoise is a quality product, but it was a bit too "invasive" for me with its shell extensions.
i use RapidSVN (free): http://rapidsvn.tigris.org/

i should say i am still suspicious of version control systems.. i never completely trust my source directory to them, i always have a backup.

furthermore my experience is that svn is a huge improvement from cvs in terms of modifying repositories (deleting the odd file, etc), but it can still freak out if you try to do major restructuring.  so try to get your directory structure basically in place before you start your repository is my advice.

Find And Run Robot / Re: can't manually add plugins
« Last post by mouser on January 07, 2008, 11:13 PM »
That is really strange, BUT:
if the updater works to install plugins, try this:
see if the updater is really installing them in the same place as you are.. or if maybe the updater and farr are putting them  and looking for them somewhere else?

i suggest this because there is really nothing that the updater does except copy the files into the plugin directory, there is no additional magic.

however did you manage to cull it down to these??
basically we went through all the items that were blogged on dc in the last year (so the blog was the first filter), and then just tried to select a representative subset of the best, with a strong emphasis on small new sites.  not very scientific.
