Revision-control of all forum posts?
yes it would be nice. we do have backups but i'm not sure it's worth the effort to restore these posts.

I'm very dissapointed in what codetrucker has done by way of deleteing all the content from this posts.  we will try to address this later so this kind of thing doesn't happen again, since it renders an entire history of conversation unintelligible.

Special Edition Mini-Newsletter for January 13th, 2008
Codename "Three Things"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read our BLOG"
(new rss feed with images)

Introduction to the Special Mini-Newsletter Edition

Greetings to everyone from the year 2008!  This is a special mini-version of our normal newsletter.  Instead of reviewing the best posts on the forum from the last few weeks like we normally do, this special edition will just briefly mention three new big things on our site this month that we wanted to draw to your attention.  We'll be back next month with our regular newsletter format.

1. New Apps for the New Year (N.A.N.Y.) 2008 - Programs Released

This month the coders on our site unveiled a dozen new freeware programs to welcome in the new year.  Some of the programs have received a lot of attention, and some are just plain strange.

Among the collection you'll find a unique new motivational program by mouser called Point Motivator, which let's you set up rewards and activities and track your progress towards achieving your own personal high score; a whimsical online tool that has taken the web by storm, CoinCalc.com, for estimating the value of the jar of coins on your shelf; a trio of very cool plugins for the Find and Run Robot program, and many more.

2. Best of the Web from 2007 - The Best Stuff You Never Saw

At the end of every year we always take some time to dig through the entire past year of posts on our forum, and create our annual "Best of the Web" retrospective roundup.

Over 46,000 posts were made on the forum in 2007, and from those posts a collection of some of the most entertaining discoveries and debates have been featured in our 2007 Best of the Web edition.  It's packed full of rare treasures you won't want to miss.

3. Massive January Shareware Giveaway+Discount Celebration

As part of our upcoming fundraiser and our three-year celebration of DonationCoder.com, we are excited to bring our supporting members a very special month of discounts and giveaways.

You'll find big discounts on some of the best shareware on the internet, plus a ton of copies to give away to our supporting members. The list includes the programs that you asked us to get discounts on, as well as new discounts and giveaways from some of our favorite companies.   A special thanks to DC member carl thorpe, who arranged for most of these discounts.

Read more and enter the draw for the software giveaway:

Living Room / SquidNote: Create online Greeting Cards that many people can sign
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2008, 09:37 PM »
Fun idea.

SquidNote is an online group greeting [card] service – we help you create a card and then circulate it to other people (around the office, around friends/family, etc) to have everyone sign the card before it gets delivered to a lucky recipient.

Here's a firefox extension called ProCon that triggers when it sees objectionable text on a web page. maybe others can post other solutions for people who want to block or filter objectionable content while they surf.

I'm not exactly advocating the use of such things, just thought it would be interesting for people to share their discoveries about such tools for those who are determined to use something like this.

Filter web pages containing explicit content based on text on websites.

ProCon is a content filter for the Firefox browser. It can filter any kind of material (pornography, gambling, hacking, cracking, etc...), it can also block all traffic, making sure that only desired websites (set in the Whitelist) can be accessed, and includes a profanity filter, all *like* a parental control filter.

ProCon also has password protection in order to keep *others* from changing the settings.

In fairness, i think a good part of the problem is that codetrucker seems to be in a very very small minority of readers here who think there is anything to be even remotely concerned about regarding the content on this forum.

However, that doesn't mean people shouldn't be more understanding of the concern.. it doesn't cost anything to try to be understanding.  Doesn't mean you have to agree.

General Software Discussion / GPG4win - a GnuPG (PGP clone) package for MS Windows
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2008, 04:31 PM »
GPG4Win is a free collection of tools for performing pgp-compatible encryption of text files and email.  It installs both commandline gnupg tools and a graphical front end utility for managing keys and and a very nice tray based tool for doing general stuff.  It's sort of a minimalist version of pgp if you don't need the full desktop tool (commercial pgp tools: here).

GnuPG is the GNU project's complete and free implementation of the OpenPGP standard as defined by RFC4880 . GnuPG allows to encrypt and sign your data and communication, features a versatile key managment system as well as access modules for all kind of public key directories. GnuPG, also known as GPG, is a command line tool with features for easy integration with other applications. A wealth of frontend applications  and libraries  are available. Version 2 of GnuPG also provides support for S/MIME.

GnuPG is Free Software (meaning that it respects your freedom). It can be freely used, modified and distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License .

GnuPG comes in two flavours: 1.4.8 is the well known and portable standalone version, whereas 2.0.8 is the enhanced and somewhat harder to build version.

Project Gpg4win provides a Windows version of GnuPG. It is nicely integrated into a installer and features several frontends as well as (German) manuals.

Living Room / PPcalc - Online Paypal Fee/Conversion Calculator and More
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2008, 04:26 PM »
This was actually mentioned previously by someone else in a thread on micro-payment systems, but i've come across it a couple of times so thought it deserved it's own post:

PPCalc.com is a free web-based PayPal fee calculator. It is an online tool that allows PayPal users to quickly calculate their PayPal fees before accepting a payment, or reverse calculate their fees to determine what amount a person must send them for them to receive a certain amount after fees. It supports calculating PayPal fees between different currencies and includes daily-updated currency exchange rates and support for cross-border transactions. It also supports PayPal's new Micropayments (digital goods) rate, and the new rate Personal accounts are charged for accepting limited credit card payments. It was originally written on May 13, 2005 and has been updated numerous times since to account for changes in PayPal fee rates. Currently, it supports calculating PayPal fees for 103 different countries and 16 different currencies and includes a built-in currency converter.

PPCalc.com is simply a third-party tool and was not written by, nor has any official connection with PayPal.com or eBay.com.

I'm sorry, but it ticks me off when the community goes out of it's way to try and accomodate somebody, but all we get back is a "sorry, that's just not good for me, I'm leaving".

I think it is a mistake in life to expect every kindness to be repaid in full in each interaction.  Better that you show kindness and respect to those you encounter, and let karma take care of the rest.  How does doing so harm you?

f0dder i don't think that tone suits you..
one of the ways this site has remained so civil is that long time members here strive to be polite and understanding and respectful, even if they don't feel they are being treated with that same respect.

i especially expect those of you who are esteemed members here to set a good example for the rest of the people who might be more recent newcomers.

reading through it it looks great.
so this sdk also includes your new advanced options dialog system with options in a standalone file?
outstanding. this javascript plugin sdk really amazes me.

i apologize i've just been so busy with other things i haven't gotten around to trying to fix this yet.  However i now have a list of quite a few small screenshot captor things to fix and i hope to have some time in the second half of this month to release a new update.

that's strange, it's capturing my exact screen size here (1600x1200).
my guess was that you had it set to add a border on capture, but you say you checked that.  it still seems to me that that's what's happening, but it could be some kind of bug making it think it should.. did you check whether you might be asking it to apply a small shadow on capture?

try this:
capture a smaller region.  see if it puts the border around that also.  if so, then that's definitely what's happening. if not, then it's something stranger.

DC is a great forum and at this point I say put the tagging system on the back burner until things cool down.

I think I may have left the impression that we are sitting here fevereshly working on the tagging system as this discussion rages.

Better clear that up.. No one is working or event planning the tagging system at this point.  It's simply something that has been discussed occasionally (mostly by me and wordzilla), and which comes up fairly regularly when i think about ways to improve the site and some of the things like the newsletter.  It's still in the phase where we are waiting for some inspiration and some settling of ideas, and mostly waiting for when i can convince Wordzilla to code it  ;)

So, don't expect this anytime too soon.  And if you do want it sooner rather than later, write to wordzilla and start pestering him

Thanks Phoom, and i'm glad you like it!  When i put together the list of user-contributed item definition files i'll be sure to include yours.  I'll look into the category bug.  One question I have -- does the duplicate category still exist after you reload the program or re-open the file? Or is it just temporary?
