Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Deductoid puzzle game
« Last post by mouser on January 16, 2008, 05:25 AM »
yeah it's fun to learn tricks and strategies.

spoiler tip
a major breakthrough i had was when i realized that the vertical clues (at the bottom) are useful for excluding possibilities not just choosing them. in other words if clue says A is above 1, and you have a non-A, then you can exclude 1.

Just a note about this -- unlike many forums, we here have no problem with an author posting about their own software.

To me it has always seemed strange that the exact same post is attacked as spam if made by an author, but welcomed with open arms if written by someone else.  Independent authors without advertising money need to be able to tell people about their software, and that's not a crime.

HOWEVER, we do *require* that anyone posting about a program make clear any affiliation or relationship they might have with the company, so that people can be fully informed.

This topic has been moved to Announce Your Software/Service/Product, because it is not a mini-review, but an announcement about a program from the author.

I've uploaded a new version (1.19.01) that i think should fix the date error problem.  Sorry it took so long.

I'm going to work on a few more fixes before i make this public but you can just download the new version and install over the old:

Please let me know if it solves the problem for you.

wow i just realized that the "clue" button just tells you a logical move you can make based on the current info..
clicking it repeatedly shows me that, contrary to what i originally thought.. maybe it really is possible to solve every puzzle without doing any guessing.. if so, thats phenomenal and very cool.

which leads me to another question.. if indeed it is always possible to solve every puzzle without guessing, using just the available clues.. how did you code it so that is the case?

maybe skrommel just needs to recompile his programs with a new version of ahk..
24384
Congratulations on the release -- and welcome to the site

I just sent this as a reply to 2 emails i've gotten recently, reporting viruses in skrommel's compiled ahk utilities (https://www.donation...m/Software/Skrommel/).

"ugh, this antivirus false alarm stuff can be so stressful.
i assure you, there are no viruses in donationcoder.com software.

certain antivirus programs are super paranoid about the "autohotkey",
the language that these programs are written in.  it's incredibly
frustrating when the antivirus tells people it has found viruses.  if
you search the internet for the the alarm it gives you and
"autohotkey" youll probably find a bunch of people cursing out the
antivirus and having the same problem.

which antivirus program are you using by the way?

the utility that gave you the warning is from Skrommel's One Hour
Software page, one way you can know you can trust these is that all of
them you can download the source code version in .ahk form and compile
them yourself.

my advice:
post this observance on the forum if you are still nervous so you can
get opinion of others.  try to find option in your antivirus to not do
"heuristic" or other "guessing" which might be causing it to false
alarm.

i apologize for any scare you might have -- try to see how painful
this is from our perspective when a virus scanning program goes around
telling people it has found viruses in our software.. the only thing i
can tell you is that these kinds of false alarms happen and you should
always use an antivirus program and always pay attention when it says
it finds something -- but never assume that just because it says it
found something that it really did."

ProcessTamer / Re: application error
« Last post by mouser on January 15, 2008, 09:13 PM »
hmm that is really strange.. nview.dll is an nvidia graphics card utility and i've used process tamer myself on a computer with that without error.

what operating system?  it happens as soon as process tamer tray utility starts?

i wonder if it's possible there is some sort of conflict -- it's hard to know of its nview at fault or process tamer, without more clues.. can you try to see if you can disable nview features and see if that stops the error.

anyone else have any ideas?

Just wanted to report it's pretty darn fun when you get the hang of it
And very nicely done.

It's hard! (at least for me) -- i'm playing only 4x4.

Question (i may have more):
Am i supposed to be able to solve every puzzle without getting any hints getting any clues or making any mistakes?
Or is part of the game the expectation that you will make some mistakes but you are going for a high score?

There is one thing that i find i wish it could do:

When you play a game like minesweeper, which is also a "constraint-based" logic puzzle, you are able to temporarily try things by marking tiles, without actually committing to your choice.

With deductoid, every click you make is absolutely final -- you see immediately whether you are right or wrong and and basically you are told the correct answer if you got it wrong.  That makes it not quite as fun as it might be otherwise i think.  just my 2 cents.

but having said that, i'm quite enjoying it

SC already has options for either copying new screenshot file path to clipboard, or copying the bitmap file data itself..
ah i see maybe you want a third option, to save the file, and then copy the file data.  hmm interesting idea..

Hi wilfred,

looks interesting --
one thing though, if this your tool or from your company you need to say so (i just mention that because this reads a bit like an advertisement or something).

I think the simplest idea (if anyone actually wants it) is to have an optional filter that users can manually enable that simply prints all expletives when viewing posts with either a row of **** or an icon such as

i like that idea.. but i'd like to suggest that the even simpler and better solution is to do this via a firefox plugin.
that way users can choose for themselves which words they dont like, and can have it applied to any site they visit, not just dc.

Living Room / Nice little write-up of DonationCoder in usa today "tech_space" blog
« Last post by mouser on January 15, 2008, 02:54 AM »
I don't usually post these, but DC member Hamradio found a really sweet mention of DC in a USA Today blog today that I wanted to share.

The DonationCoder NANY (New Apps for the New Year) 2008 challenge wrapped up with an assortment of cool little applications, many for Windows folk but some accessible to anyone with a Net connection. If you don't know about DonationCoder, it's a swell little site for programmers and other cussed eccentrics -- donation-based, platform-independent, and one of the few places on the Web you can (within limits) inquire about having someone maybe cook you up the oh-so-specific program you're needing.

I like their attitude a lot, obviously, and the 2008 challenge did not disappoint. Browse through the entries at the link above, and don't miss CoinCalc, which -- given some basic info from you -- can estimate how much change you've managed to squirrel away in that jar on the bookcase. I had some fun with it; give it a try and see how it does for you. It's a nice introduction to the "donationware" sensibility, and you may just find a community of like-minded souls to boot.

Supposedly the skill is in attaining a competitive high score, not in completing all 50 waves.
that makes some sense, since there are various ways to get more points that can really increase the challenge (there are 'Dares' you can purchase, etc.)

Today is a great day for those of you who love the genre of Tower Defense flash games, with the release of Flash Element TD 2.

JayIsGames.com has a nice long write up about why this is such a good thing, so i'll just let you go and read it there.  It's a very nice game, with some new ideas and a ton of personality and strategy.

I just noticed that CodeTRUCKER took down his NANY app..
yes he did, he also removed his entry from last year's as well.  i've taken it off the page listing the programs available.

it's his program, if he wants to remove it that his prerogative.  i have no feelings of anger just sadness that whatever he is going through has caused him such turmoil/anger.
