General Software Discussion / Re: Is the Windows start menu dead?
« Last post by Josh on September 24, 2007, 04:20 AM »
Thats just it, you have to install WDS separately, it is not used by the Vista search feature. Vista expanded upon the already existent indexing service and provided a way for users to see direct results of what it can do. When I visited mouser, I suggested he tap into the API for the indexing service as it provides a large database of many attributes of files chosen to be indexed by the end user.

Good to hear he is ok and things went well, off to shoot him an email. I guess saying that its just me using a voodoo doll to poke him wouldn't go over as humorous to him eh? ;-)

Farr with locate32 is nice, however, I've found that the need to have two separate programs doesnt really justify resource usage
Actually, those aren't 2 separate programs, i don't use locate, only its database updater, when i need to update the DB, and that's something that probably vista start menu also does (if it includes indexing).

Vista's start menu DOES have an indexer. Hence why you have "SearchIndexer.exe, SearchProtocolHost.exe, and SearchFilterHost.exe" running. These three applications make up the instant search capability that is possible in any explorer window, not just the Vista start menu. And as far as locate and farr goes, wouldnt farr need to launch locate32 in order for it to run? Wouldnt this slow things down for the sheer fact that it has to launch a program as opposed to using one which is already running? A better idea would be to tap into the Windows Search protocol and utilize databases that are already being indexed anyway. If locate could do what the Windows search indexer does, then I would use it. Right now, however, it only indexes on demand (via a scheduled update, or user-forced update) and does not integrate into explorer without having to first launch the application.

And yes, Vista's start menu is totally independent of WDS.

Farr with locate32 is nice, however, I've found that the need to have two separate programs doesnt really justify resource usage when the start menu functions just as well for me, if not quicker, and uses resources already being utilized by the OS. Resource usage is my prime concern when it comes to choosing a solution.

Actually, I have to say that the start menu is even more useful to me now in vista. I simply hit the windows logo key, type what I am looking for, and its found in the start menu. I can even do folder browsing like in farr. The Vista start menu has impressed me. I love it

Probably a play by the dev team since they considered XP to be their "Flag ship" product of the Windows series when it was released.

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by Josh on September 14, 2007, 11:26 AM »
Darwin,

DOpus 9 has features geared towards vista. While DOpus 8 might work in vista, its not designed for native use and as such isnt optimized to the way vista works. If I want a version which is fully suited to Vista, I have to upgrade, which means paying the ridiculous fee for something I won't utilize anywhere nears its potential. I loved opus in XP, but for Vista, the usage is the same however there are many nicities in Vista's Explorer that I love and dont see in DOpus8. The costs to upgrade versus the usefulness I've seen from the trial arent justifiable. That, and for the $60 I spend on an UPGRADE to Dopus, I could buy 2 or 3 licenses of other file managers which give me a better bang for my buck.

Has anybody used *any* file manager, then gone back to explorer?
I mean, I'm having trouble seeing DC users that actually like explorer :)

Actually, can you post your evolution if you switched? I like those. I went explorer -> dopus (with DC discount -> TC (horrified by dopus upgrade fees, I found nirvana in TC)

I have switched back. I don't like any of the other file managers, besides dopus (but I refuse to pay the upgrade costs the author feels he has to charge), because none of them can intercept calls to shell execution commands (Start - run, shellex, etc) and open THOSE in a window like DOpus can. So for me, I have switched back to Vista's version of explorer for the sheer reason that it works, it works well, and I dont have to "pay" to get it upgraded. I can always extend it with freely available software and dont have to pay an upgrade fee. Yes, some will now claim "But you pay when you upgraded to vista", but I cant concur with that logic. I paid for a new OS, not the explorer portion.

But anyways, I would use DOPus as it was given to me as a gift (Thanks KenR), but like I said, the prices the author charges for UPGRADES isn't justified with the "benefits" I gain from using it or from upgrading.

General Software Discussion / Re: problems with (having moved) windows temp folder
« Last post by Josh on September 14, 2007, 03:40 AM »
Thats just it, if software is telling you that it cant find the temp folder, then it isnt using the Windows API to access it and is instead using a hard coded path, which is bad juju.

Too bad for me? I love *nix, but I also dont dilute myself into believing it could ever take the place of windows for 90% of users. There is a reason it hasnt taken off yet, lets just leave it at that and let this thread go back to its topic.

Too bad none of those alternatives are even ready for mainstream use.

I really dont consider this a big deal. As long as they arent patching OS components without telling me, thats fine. Automatic updates patching on its own is fine because in the end, its only helping users stay up to date. But I guess this is a case where microsoft is wrong (not in my eyes) for trying to do something that IS useful.

Exactly, a car can be compared to a computer in that, the longer you keep it, the more it costs to maintain. For a computer, the longer you keep it without upgrading, the more of your TIME it takes to maintain. Upgrading is something everyone must do at one point (when the costs outweigh the benefits).

I agree, whole-heartedly. No one forces you to visit a website. If you don't like their choice of advertising, by all means, stop using the website, but don't claim an invasion of privacy.

Well, on the same note, they are well within their rights to block you from accessing the site if you choose to block the ads. Its a two way street. I am a firm believer that if you utilize something enough, and its provided for free or offers an option for some form of reimbursement, you should reimburse the author (be it donations, subscriptions, etc). If an ad makes your favorite site free, why shouldnt you support them and let it be shown?
