interesting. this burnout scenario is what i've considered 'normality' for as far back as i can remember. well, only for about 6 months in every year that passes. time to seek help - hmmm, maybe next year. hark, hark, i hear the procrastination bell ringing somewhere afar.

Living Room / Re: Very odd graphics problem - anyone any ideas ?
« Last post by nudone on December 15, 2006, 05:10 AM »
can't really offer any help but i get this kind of problem with my graphics cards when i've got them set up for tv out.

it's understandable when i've ONLY got tv out set on a card but i've had cards do it when they just felt like doing it - never figured out why - i just forgot about it.

i hope you find the solution but i wouldn't be surprised if there isn't an answer - that works.

huh, maxthon 1.59, i'm still using 1.58 - i just can't keep up.

great. now i'll end up wasting even more time stumbling.

i wish there were was a way of filtering out video clips over a certain length, i.e. avoid everything over 60 seconds running time - that way you could merrily browse through a few videos knowing that you aren't going to have to sometimes waste 5 or more minutes watching dud clips.

they'll have to remove the word 'innocence' from the dictionary in a few years as no one will remember its meaning.

i'm in no way a coder but i do have a math background. the salient point being that i now have trouble doing simple mental arithmetic let alone anything else.

if i was to try to continue in mathematics i know i wouldn't understand anything right now. i'd have to start at the beginning, get the basics down and then build from that. hopefully a lot of it would seem like riding a bike and things would 'click' a lot quicker than they did first time around.

so, why tell you this?

i'm wondering if your problem is that you've forgotten some of the 'basics'. you don't see the connections as quickly as you did nor grasp the concepts so swiftly because you've lost a few of the simple tools that allowed you to piece it all together.

i still experience that eureka moment when i'm learning something novel, but it's with topics that are relatively new to me - or with things that i feel expert in. so either the subject is fresh in my mind - with the 'basics' still firmly retrievable, or the subject is something that just feels intuitive as i've been doing it that long.

but i've definitely had the experience of returning to things only to be confused and overwhelmed by the topic and i think it's always been because i've lost that 'basic' knowledge that underpins it. my advice would be to just try refreshing yourself with what you think you know - see if you've forgotten a few things.

other than that, i know that i find certain things beyond my comprehension because i'm simply not interested with them anymore, i.e. mathematics. there are other things i'd rather be concentrating on - maybe you've got yourself into a similar position and you don't really want to code as much as you think you do.

sounds a lot like how postwar generations would guffaw at how prewar(ish) children would play with a hoop and a stick or spinning-top, etc.

games have always been about the imagination required to fill in the gaps to make it seem real - but it seems like we are becoming increasingly lazy and increasingly critical so that only 'virtual' reality will suffice the next generations of kids.

i admit that i only unistalled zone alarm in the usual manner before installing comodo. this clearly didn't remove all the files it should have done otherwise i wouldn't have had a problem when reinstalling zone alarm. so, i can accept this might be why the comodo firewall acted a bit odd with me.

i'd give comodo another try but i found the number of prompts it kept popping up was far too annoying - stupid things like maxthon is trying to connect to the internet using parent application gom player. almost anything that connected to the net would say it was using a different parent application to do so - i'm sure some things were correct but others were gibberish - and if they weren't gibberish then i really don't want to know. no doubt this is makes for a more secure system but i haven't the patience to click a prompt pretty much every time something connects - i'm more used to allowing a program through the firewall and then letting that be remembered for me.

okay, it would only ask once for each specific combination of app and parent app but the number of parent apps it 'thought' were being used just made it ridiculous. i shan't try to describe the situation further as i can well imagine i'm the only person that had this problem.

anyway, my main reason for using comodo was for assigning specific port numbers - which i quickly realised after installing it that i really don't need to use (port numbers were important to me about 3 years ago).

currently, zone alarm allows me to allow an app through the firewall - and then forget about it. i really don't care what 'parent' application is being used to trigger it.

is my system an less safe because of it? i'm not worried, i'm just glad not to have to keep clicking on extra dumb prompts.

this isn't to say that wouldn't try comodo again - i'll just wait until i have a good reason for it.

just thought i'd mention my futher adventures of my system being messed up by comodo.

i previously said that i couldn't reinstall zone alarm (free edition) after having comodo on my machine. this probably had nothing to do with comodo and was just because zone alarm didn't uninstall correctly.

i've now got zone alarm back on the machine and thought it worth mentioning the little util that let me do it.

Greenwood's Computer Corner http://www.greenwood....com/sgcomputer.html has a download called zfix.zip that, when run, will remove all traces of zone alarm.

of course, you can do it manually and start messing around looking for files to delete and things to remove out of the registry - but 'zfix' does it all for you.

seems to be a common problem with zone alarm.

looks very nice. going to make the effort to read this one.

edit:
or not. after browsing through the archives i didn't really come across anything that i've not read elsewhere. if you've yet to read any 'time-management' or 'self-help' books then Scott's website will be of more use to you and should be worth a look.

i find it comes in very handy when encoding video - usually with virtualdub, which has it's own cpu process settings but i tend to ignore them. without using process tamer my mouse would become less responsive (jerky) as would the movement of other windows.

i've also had several apps be tamed by process tamer when they get stuck in an endless loop (i assume that is what is happening), things like acdsee and internet explorer.

Living Room / Re: Real code vs. Code in the movies
« Last post by nudone on December 08, 2006, 02:41 AM »
sorry, i don't know about code things but i did start to watch CSI: Miami for the first time in my life about 3 days ago. got to the 5th episode and just ejected the dvd out of the player.

i don't quite see what all the fuss is about with this show. their ridiculous use of imaginary technology was definitely something that put me off. from all the hype i was expecting to see a show that remained realistic but it's beyond fantasy.

anyway, if you're talking about fictional computer power in the movies - don't forget 'lawnmower man'. it must rate as the top most ludicrous representation of what computers do. i felt embarrassed to see all that virtual world crap - but then it does still look better than 'second life'.
