General Software Discussion / Re: What is your boot time?
« Last post by mouser on January 31, 2008, 06:58 AM »
since i only reboot once every couple of weeks these days, i must admit i don't really care about boot time.

i do however have a pc in my bedroom which i put on standby and wake up from sleep regularly. and the turn off and turn on time is under 3 seconds (see my post about it here: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=11991.0) is done using the physical on/off button.  couldn't be simpler or faster.

i have to disagree with renegade -- those links are a bit advanced.
if you are new to programming you need to start out much slower.

Maybe start by trying to figure out what language you want to learn..

Then you might try some of the assignments here on our programming school:

Maybe people can recommend some beginner sites for people just getting their feet wet in programming?

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Google Translation Plugin
« Last post by mouser on January 31, 2008, 06:29 AM »
http://www.google.co...language_tools?hl=en

google can translate between a lot of languages, it would be nice if a plugin could be made so you can indicate what language you want to translate to and from..

like:

gt en fr hello there my friend!

would do google translate from english to french the phrase "hello there my friend!"

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Option to move dock(s)?
« Last post by mouser on January 31, 2008, 06:21 AM »
is it in your tray?
is it possibly off screen because you had multi monitor before but not now?
try this program "Discover" which when you double click its icon will move all windows into visual display range if they are offscreen:
http://www.geocities...2/main/freeware.html

ps. it might be nice to recreate that program with ahk for all the ahk coders.

currently there is no way to do it, but i'll consider adding it as an option.

General Software Discussion / Re: https by default?

that's a nice idea for a firefox plugin -- to switch to https for all urls where its available.

is chs still compressed? i thought i stopped compressing my executables a while ago, partly for this reason.
24234
cool
ill see if i can fix the height bug.

i wonder if you could make a version that interfaced with some other translation online tools..
24235
yeesh, this is getting ridiculous, i really wish these antivirus companies would show some more care.

i think the problem is that when antivirus tests are reported -- no one cares about false positives, but if an antivirus program ever MISSES detecting a virus, it looks bad.

so the motivation for antivirus companies is to just flag anything they dont understand as a virus.. not cool.

Post New Requests Here / Request: (Email) Extractor With Options
« Last post by mouser on January 30, 2008, 08:24 AM »
One of the things i do occasionally at DC is take all the bounced email from the last newsletter and "extract" all emails and then remove them from future mailing lists.

I currently use a freeware email extractor but i'd like to see one with some more features.

This should be a simple project and i can code it myself in a day but i thought i'd put it out there in case someone wants to try it, and maybe make it more general.

So here is my idea for a more general extractor:

0) should be a gui utility (yes i know this would be easy to do with a commandline script).
1) let user drag and drop or add a number of files to process as input
2) show results in a memo with a button to save to file
3) options for specifying the regular expressions (multiple) to extract from each line if found
(the program should have maybe a helper to let you select common things like the regex for an email).
4) options for specifying a list of regular expressions to EXCLUDE from matching (ie if this is found in a regex match in step 3 ignore it)
5) option to reject duplicates.
6) save all options above on exit.

Anyone else have any ideas to add to it?  Anyone want to try to code this?

Official Announcements / February 2008 Discounts and Shareware Giveaway
« Last post by mouser on January 29, 2008, 06:44 AM »
To follow up on January's massive collection of programs from different companies, in February we are focusing on one company that makes a large variety of truly excellent programs: Metaproducts.com. Metaproducts is the home of quite a few programs that are clearly at the top of their class, including, Offline Explorer, Mass Downloader, Startup Organizer, and many more.

The software giveaway ends February 14th, and the discounts expire February 28th.

This Month's Special Discounts and Giveaways:

In addition, due to late posting in January,  the following discounts are running through February:

A note on my personal experience with Metaproducts.com programs:
I only add my own comments to these discount posts when i feel really compelled to do so and when i have some personal experience with the programs.  I can personally recommend very strongly three of their programs: Offline Explorer, Mass Downloader, and Startup Organizer.  These are extraordinarily good programs with extremely well designed user interfaces.

Offline Explorer is one of the best website spider/mirroring programs available -- it's both easy to use and extremely powerful.  If you've ever wanted to make a copy of a website, this is *the* program to do it.  Mass Downloader is a related program, but it's more of a traditional download manager for grabbing files on a page (rather than mirroring an entire site); there are a lot of download managers, and some really good free ones, but for some reason i just keep coming back to Mass Downloader, maybe just because i find the user interface so intuitive.  And then there is Startup Organizer, which helps you manage which programs start with windows.  Again there are several startup managers available (mostly shareware), I keep coming back personally to Startup Organizer.  It's very polished, does just about everything you could want, and the interface is a real pleasure to use.

Also we should mention that the programs all have a 30-day money-back guarantee(!)

Quick Links:

Important!
In January we offered an unprecedented number of discounts on some amazing programs.. Many of those discounts are still available (but will be expiring soon).  These discounts are available to all supporting and honorary members of the site: Discount Code Section.

Actually i meant his "guitar and drum trainer": http://renegademinds...efault.aspx?tabid=65
it's kind of the opposite of what you want, can slow down songs etc.

I think adding ability to send to a member from the Send This Topic page is a no brainer and should be added.
CodeTrucker has a point that that doesn't let you send a specific message, which is unfortunate, but im not sure it warrants adding another button to every post.
So my inclination is to put on my todo list a change to the Send This Topic page which:
  • Expands size of comment field
  • Lets you put in user names instead of emails to send to and sends them a PM if you do

I do think this feature could be useful -- for example people sometimes email me and let me know there is apost about one of my programs that i havent replied to yet, and so i think this would make this easier.
