They just released a native 64-bit Vista version, as well.  The one I mentioned yesterday is 32-bit Vista-compatible.

General Software Discussion / Software for measuring resource usage?
« Last post by rjbull on December 03, 2007, 03:58 AM »
Lots of threads have remarks about the resource usage of various programs, so much CPU etc.  What's the best program for tracking resource usage?  Looks like you'd ideally need something like a chart with resource usage plotted against time.

TIA...

Access your favorite and recently visited folders and documents with one mouse click. Adds push-pin button to keep windows on top, and roll-up button to hide window contents except for title bar.

Living Room / Re: Amazon's Kindle eBook Reader

I heard from someone who claimed to read blockbuster nineteenth century novels on her Palm while waiting in line in queues!  Which makes me wonder why anyone would buy an eBook-only device, when they could have the functionality of a PDA.

Because reading a book from a PDA sucks.  It can be done, I have done it, but man... those things are not optimized for the task.  It's like watching a 2-hour movie on your phone.  Sure, people do it, but it's not exactly a pleasant experience.

Fair enough - she said you can easily increase the text size, but you'd be constantly paging down and it wouldn't be comfortable.  But there's no reason you couldn't have a Kindle-sized PDA with e-Paper screen, and that might be a better bet.

Finally would anyone choose to read a novel on this sort of device - there is no way I want to lie in bed with a glowing lump of plastic glaring at me instead of a comforting paperback that can happily drop on the floor without problems when I drop off to sleep!

Don't think I'd have the patience for queues that long, though...

What I'd like is a way of clipping a section of text from a Web page, and saving it with the URL included automatically.

If I'm reading this correctly, both Evernote and NetSnippets allow you to do this. If you can still find a copy of the free version of Netsnippets somewhere, it does this, brilliantly. Evernote does it as well and is available in a free version.

Darwin,

Do you mean that both of them will include the URL along with the clip, even when the the clip wasn't the whole of the page?

I should still have a copy of free NetSnippets somewhere; I seem to remember reading here that it's been abandoned.

What I'd like is a way of clipping a section of text from a Web page, and saving it with the URL included automatically.  I do it now with a batch file that prompts me, but then I have to Alt-Tab back and forth to to Crl-L, Ctrl-C; quick and easy, but it could be quicker and easier still.

Hmmm...  going off topic...

I doubt it will satisfy kalos, but don't forget this:

VisitURL: Flexible, efficient, lightweight bookmark manager

VisitURL is not a fully-fledged bookmark manager. It is not a replacement for Netscape's bookmark file or Internet Explorer's Favorites. It does not organize bookmarks into categories.

VisitURL is designed to help maintain a handy (as in: at hand) list of URLs that you intend to visit. For instance, if a friend sends you an email recommending that a particular URL, Visit is a good place to store the URL until you are ready to launch your browser and go surfing. If you copy the URL to clipboard, Visit will automatically intercept it and save to its database. If you copy several URLs at once, Visit will get all of them. (You may also add URLs manually or directly from an open browser window.) If you copy the URL with some text around it, Visit will optionally treat that text as a description for the URL you copied.

To access the bookmarked site, you can either view the HTML page that Visit creates in your browser, or click a toolbar button to launch the browser directly from Visit. There is no limit to how many URLs you may store, though the program is primarily designed to hold, view and edit a short, temporary list. Netscape and Explorer tend to consume so much system resources that it's not practical to keep them loaded at all times - this is where Visit comes in.

Can Roboform be used with an arbitrary browser - I know it won't work with Opera, but will it work with K-Meleon, for example?

I *suppose* I should be backing the data up to a different format as a backup...

Can you do that?  I thought one of the drawbacks of Roboform was limited import/export, which if true would look like trying to lock you in.

OK, but bear in mind that extreme enthusiasm is difficult to distinguish from zealotry to passers-by...

Please take a look at this thread Auto browser open, form field fill batch script - I assume this is what Roboform does well, even if the OP wanted a different solution.

But what I would like is that a field in the form on the page gets a word put in for me so that I don't have to manually type it. [...]
I was hoping for something general, every kind of case thing.

I think it's very hard to do that, which is why Roboform's technology is proprietary.  By contrast, KeePass, a very good freeware password manager, can type long custom text for you, but you have to set the starting location for the cursor.  That is, if you set the URL, it will load the default browser with that page, but you have to locate the cursor in the starting field before it can type the text.  Same thing with (payware) LinkStash bookmarks manager.

And there's a DC thread on Roboform (one of several, I think - lots of people here really like it) here

It's now payware, but you can find older free versions around the Web if you look.  Here's one, from an old post in alt.comp.freeware:

Program: AI RoboForm (v 4.6.8 )
Company: Siber Systems
W: LFW
Ware: (Freeware) LFW (v 4.6.8 ) last uncrippled version Note: disable

OK, so they behave honourably regarding (re)activation.  That's good to know.

I do, however, worry about the issue of being able to access my data if they go under.

Shame no escrow system...

However, if that were to happen, the free version is available so you're data would not be inaccessible - it just wouldn't be very convenient!

I thought the free versions only offered 10 entries, except for one older one which did 30 or so.  If you have more entries than that - not very convenient at all...

just one hoop which is quick, easy and painless.

OK, it's probably a hoop I have an unreasonable dislike of.  What happens if, for example, you more to a new computer; do you have to contact them for activation?

I just find it easier to visit websites. [...] What I really want is :-

- get the entire article and keep a copy offline. If the article is not available in the feed then it should cache the web page with all images etc

You might try combining Martin Aignesberger's http://www.aignes.com/products.htm Website-Watcher (which can operate as an RSS reader) and his Local Website Archive.

Feedreader [...] some of its features & settings are kind of buried.

No-op for me at work, where they use proxy.pac files.  I went into configuration and told Feedreader 3.10 to use IE's settings.  It greyed out all the other boxes, but it couldn't have saved the settings because it just didn't work, and the HD's light didn't flicker when it should have been saving.  By contrast, Great News worked OK first time.

Yes, you must activate it over the web with the RoboForm server.  I remember being worried about this initially (like what if the company went away)....but I've since forgotton about that.  I view that as a necessary evil in order for a software company to protect their intellectual property.

Well, other companies are concerned about their intellectual property, but don't make you jump through so many hoops.  If they are going to take that approach, it would be nice if they had some kind of escrow system in case they do go under; not likely in their case, but a good principle.  Is there any kind of Web service anywhere that does that?

@Josh: turns out I own two fixed licenses and one portable (DC discount) and never activated any of them   :-[

I've used RoboForm (RF) for years....it is the first thing i install on any new laptop.  Well worth the price.  The key features I use RF are:
  • Password Manager:  Pretty obvious here.  The key drawback to this is that it only works with websites so other apps I use can't have their PW autofilled by RF.

KeePass is good at that.  It has a "cmd://" construct so you can call a program with the same Ctrl-U hotkey you would normally use to launch a browser with the URL.

  • Bookmarks:  Rather than using the Bookmarks in IE or Firefox, I use the feature in RF.  Since I always have RF, I always have my bookmarks.

I use the excellent bookmark manager LinkStash.  LinkStash keeps secure passwords, so I've put most of the important KeePass ones into it as well.  The very new LinkStash 2 doesn't seem to work on my old Win98 laptop, though, at least not yet, so I've gone back to 1.7.3 for now.  Not missing anything critical.

  • Safe:  I use this to store software keys, etc.

I sometimes do that with KeePass, but I'm tending now to put them into an encrypted MemPad file.  Then I can keep all the relevant information together, copies of e-mails, and successive generations of keys if they change on upgrading, etc.

I didn't like what I heard of RoboForm's business model, with online activation on specific computers (correct me if I'm wrong.)  And, I make out Web forms so seldom that it didn't seem worth making the effort to adopt it, especially if the program doesn't have good import/export features, thereby keeping you locked in.

Kevin Kelly of the Cool Tools Blog recommends the Swatch Original; clear, accurate, light, cheap, waterproof...

If you're into landscape photography, and want a watch that tells you when sun/moon rise/set are, and the phases of the moon, check out this Luminous Landscape article on The YES Watch which does all that and more.  The same author wrote an article on how to make a camera buying decision by using a watch purchase as an analogy

pdftk - PDF toolkit can split PDFs into separate files for each page, and there's a pdftk Builder Windows GUI shell, but I don't know of any context-menu integration.  However, I seem to remember seeing various forums and Web sites devoted to PDF tools, maybe they'd be the place to search.

@Armando:  thanks - wouldn't it be nice if Evernote stated clearly what features were and weren't available...  And the resource usage looks a bit heavy for me  :(

@elvisbrown:  I heard once that ShirusuPad too was a resource hog, but that was several years ago.  Any comments?

@mnemonic:  For a small, fast program, you can't really beat Mempad  :)
