General Software Discussion / Re: imaging & partitioning queries
« Last post by Armando on August 16, 2007, 08:57 PM »
1) Make sure you have an image backup of your initial configuration. I don't know if your computer will come with some kind of recovery CD or whatever, but if not, the first thing you should do is to image your drive -- if anything goes wrong (while partitioning, etc.) you can always go back to the initial state — and make sure that the image is valid as steeladept recommanded. (If possible, test it!)

If Acronis 7 (true image or disk director??) doesn’t do what you want (but it should), you could also try one of the free Open Source partitioning and imaging Solutions like gparted http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ (only for partitioning) or parted magic http://partedmagic.com/ (does imaging too) -- you'll need to dowload (about 50mb, I think) and burn them on a CD. Gparted is easy to use and reliable. I must admit that I have never used the Open source imaging solutions though (only on parted magic), only the partitioning one.

2) Of course , after imaging, just partition your hard drive (using the chosen boot CD). That, you probably already know, but anyway! If your computer comes with Windows preinstalled, you could just keep it as it is and create 1 or 2 extra partitions (which will probably be called E:, if D: is taken by your DVD drive) — that is if there was only one to begin with. Anyway… the point is : make sure you have at least 2 partitions. One for the OS, and one for your personal stuff.  Personally, I like the setup in your first post. I have almost the same: the active partition C: for Windows and apps, E: for all my personal stuff (D: is the DVD drive -- but drive letters, as you probably know, can be changed), F:  for temporary stuff (downloads, movies, etc.). There are other partitions, but they don't really count : they're for Linux, when I feel like playing a bit (2 ext3 partitions + 1 swap).

(Generally speaking, I find that it's uselessly complicated to have too many partition — especially if you have a very good backup system with reliable media and software).

Normally, if you have Acronis 7 as a boot CD/DVD, and if it's compatible with the OS you want to install (presumably XP...), you shouldn't have to deal with all the details about system partition, boot partition etc. If you need to install windows yourself, just make sure that the first partition is an active primary partition (and that it’s not hidden — it shouldn’t be anyway). That’s it. Do whatever you want with the others…
If you have 2 hard drives, you could put the paging file on the second drive (if Windows is on the first). Otherwise, I'd just leave it on drive C. It's just sipler and I've never seen a real noticeable gain in performance. Some won't agree, I'm know... But my paging file “philosophy” goes like that : once your paging file starts to get used too much and decreases performance, it's just time for more RAM.

3) After imaging, partitioning, etc., you will then either do a clean install of Windows XP (booting with the Windows CD/DVD), or just start from the preinstalled OS on the machine (if there's anything valuable there). That's what I did with my Dell : I usually do a clean install, but this time I decided to only uninstall a couple unwanted software and I started from there. It was quick and painless.

I don't know if any of that will be useful.

Good luck!

Just came back from a loooooong work day...
Thanks for your time Jim! I'll have a look at these different elements and try to figure out what's possible.
As you said, external links would be kind of fragile, but that's to be expected...
I'll post back my discoveries -- if any!

Living Room / Re: suffering online status anxiety
« Last post by Armando on August 16, 2007, 03:06 AM »
Don't worry nudone, you're not alone.  :)  But that shouldn'rt stop you blogging about your anxious condition though -- I haven't seen too many things on that subject yet  :P

People (well, most of us) live according to what others think and according to specific (sometimes defective) sociocultural scripts. It's a complex subject which has been explored from several points of view: psychological, sociological, anthropological (and maybe biological... who knows). The “web” component might be new, but I’m not sure if it really changes the “parameters” that much.

Status, more specifically, has always been important in human societies — it's one of these important parameter human beings manipulate with more or less ability to differentiate themselves from others, gain power, promote their ideas, genes, etc. It should be noted though that status, which always exists in terms of comparisons and hierarchy (you’re always better, higher or worse, lower than someone else) is not bad per se; it’s just another component of  the complex human communication and interaction system. BUT, in contrast, the feeling of anxiety can tell something about one’s attitude (most probably negative) towards status.

Anxiety could probably be loosely defined as a “counter emotion” as it is a “negative” feeling which arises because one represses, censures or muffles the expression of another emotion... fear. It can manifest through different kinds of bodily experiences, like stomach pain and other physical tensions… Ao anxiety usually means that one fears something in the present or in the future. The cure for ansxiety usually lies in one’s willingness to disclose what fear it hides. Fear tells you that you perceive a potential danger. Some possibly useful and therapeutic questions would be: what do you fear and why do you fear what you fear? What do you need to do that you’re not doing to resolve that fear? Etc. These questions can help to reveal what the insecurities are, exactly, and find ways to calm them down. But, of course, that might not be enough, depending on other factors (biological, psychological…). Ken R’s knowledge could be handy here :) .

Anyway.

Like you suggested, every era and sociocultural context comes with its own ways of defining identity, hence status, etc. Presence on the web (like powerful computers, software, etc.) certainly plays a major role in identity definition nowadays and, in a strange way (and despite its inherent networking function!!), the web seems to contribute (more then anything else before) to our decidedly narcissistic culture, so characteristic of Western postmodern societies : aren't we (we... web 2.0’s children or contemporaries) obsessed with ourselves, our image(s) and how people see us? I’m not saying that in a condescending way, of course (if it's part of our evolution... so be it!). I’m just saying…

It's a huge subject, my brain is fried, I’m not a real psychologist nor a sociologist, and my English is way too clunky (sorry…) to embark in a multuperspectivist analysis of "status anxiety" in relation to web 2.0 at 3:30 am…

But maybe I can add one more thing to make you feel less lonely  ;) : sometimes I wonder if I'm not unhappy about my Ph.D. research because of some screwed up scripts or belief systems, parental projections, etc., related to some kind of screwed up… status perception. Yes, that’s it. And last year I surprised myself having “grandiose” thoughts of a great website of mine where I would disclose all these precious ideas my supervisor doesn't seem to care too much about, etc. Not that it's a bad idea though… But I do have this weird feeling… Anxiety?

Anyway, it's in the air. It's part of who we are in this sociocultural context.

But what matters is most probably our attitude towards status and web conquest. (Fortunately, my girlfriend seems oblivious of my absence of status...  )

I have to go get some sleep now as I’m starting to say stupid teings

Cheers.

And I wonder how the researchers here manage all their precious definitions (if not using a wiki system)... Of course, one can make his own independant dictionnary/database... But that's a bit different since there is no real automated linking involved.

Also, if it seems driver related, you could try to uninstall the dvd and controllers' drivers and reinstall them ? (It shouldn't do any harm and I remember that I fixed some weird DVD problems by doing that, many years ago...)

PS: Carol, you know I'm not an expert... and you are much much more qualified than I am...  :-[ I'm suggesting stuff to offer another perspective (lateral thinking, if you wish...). Nothing more!

I haven't tried PIO in normal mode - it is just too slow.

I was just asking because it could be something with UDMA... Maybe there's some registry corruption, or driver conflict-corruption, as you suggested... Since it works in PIO mode, why not in UDMA... that's weird.

Have you checked your device manager and what it says about transfert mode, current transfer mode, etc.?

Thanks for the links (in your 1st post), Justice.
Have you tried any of these... like the above mentionned NikSaver?

I think programs like this are pretty useful if you just want to revert 1 or 2 apps to some previous configuration (without having to dig for hours to find out where the right settings are stored, which image contains the right config, etc.). Right now, I use a normal backup strategy based on True Image, a bit like Darwin. It works OK, but is not optimal in some cases.

BTW : this thread is somewhat related to the User settings storage debate

That's weird. Have you tried using PIO in Normal mode?
Have you tried with another dvd drive on the same machine?...
Or the same dvd drive on another machine ?

Thank you for the suggestions! Sorry for the late feedback on this one.  :-[
My brain is dead these days, and I didn't feel apt to follow up on that one.

Yes, exactly : I'm looking for something wiki-like, but for Word :  putting a term inside [ ] (in my case, it would probably be [[ ]] to avoid confusion with comments) would transform it into a potential link -- as Iphigenie explained.

@tabletguy : I'm not sure how you'd transform the "Chinese tone marking converter" macro into one that would have a wiki bend...

The macro would probably have to :

1- Find the bracketed words
2- Create a  database or index (or use an already existing one -- there are so many desktop search software around...) to contain all these bracketed words (the wiki words), and, of course, refer back to the exact spot in the documents containing the original bracketed words (a bit like tiddlyWiki, for example -- but I have no idea how tiddlyWiki does it...)
3- Rapidly find corresponding "normal" words in MS Word documents and link them back to the original (bracketed) term (thanks to the "wiki word" database/index).

...or something like that... I'm thinking out loud, of course.

I have no idea how complex that would be to code, or if it even exists. Maybe it does.

edit : the nice thing with wiki words is that your can quickly refer back directly to the definition you want for a specific term, without having to spend time looking for it manually into a data base (or, even worse, using X1, or something else...) -- it's not just mere linking similar words together, of course. Inserting tags-keywords (as textual strings) directly in the text could do the trick, I guess, but would certainly not be as elegant, and would be more complicated to handle with large quantities of terms/tags.

(Armando, no offense intended)

Thanks Lashiec. No worries. I just put the link as an extra reference... I don't necessarily enjoy CNET/download.com's material, and I agree with what you said **... Also, personnally, I'm pretty happy with XP and I KNOW (it's a certitude) that Vista is not for me. At least, not for the next 2 years. And then it will probably be Linux, not Vista (especially the huge progress made virtualization software, like VMware, etc.). I wonder which distro will be #1 at that point... PCLinuxOS? Suse? Ubuntu? Sabayon? But that's for another highly speculative thread...   :)

**edit : and the comments at download.com show a majority of insatisfaction with Vista. These people might not be connaisseurs, but who cares : they're unsatisfied users complaining about the same problems most people complain about : software compatibility, resource hog, etc.

Darwin, I guess you're already familliar with Edward Tufte's work on data visualization, etc?
A few ref. :
- Images and quantities, evidence and narrative
- The visual display of quantitative information
- Envisioning information

Very interesting stuff I'll be using (partly...) for my thesis.

ok i could add that, maybe with like ctrl+shift+C
Good idea!  :)

I mostly use Word 2003, but I like OOo very much -- except for a few things, like cross-referencing, commenting and outlining, which I use a lot. And I don't think that StarOffice makes these things better, of course...

I actually sometimes use OOo to "correct" problems (usually : table problems) in MS Word documents by opening/saving them in OOo and then reopening them in Word. Strangely, it fixes the tables etc.

OK. I went there and found pretty much answers to my questions... :-[ :

So, if this can happen for Linux too, I'll be switching sooner than I thought.

Here's a nice video of the VMWare "unity" feature (in VMWare Fusion) -- speaks for itself : http://www.youtube.c...llels%2Dcoherence%2F

VMWare fusion seems like it will surpass parallels in terms of features. Run, parallels, run...

P.S. Edit : and here's a recent review of VMware Fusion

@nontroppo :

Does Parallels for Mac really allows Windows apps to each run in their OWN windows (not windows  inside a window of a MS Windows desktop...), a bit like if one was using Wine on a Linux box? (that's what I understood from one of your previous post...)

According to your experience, I understand that cpu power consumption is about 5% higher, but how much more RAM (%) does it take to run both XP and OS X + the Parallels layer, all at the same time (vs running OS X alone)?

thanks

Give me a free summer then maybe I can do it, otherwise I'm trapped.

I've tried several summers... i'm still trapped.

But I still have hope. One day...

IMHO, even more resources should go into developping virtualization solutions and other compatibility layers like... Wine.

About those posts above.. I actually do do graphics, and whats illegal about it??

As a joke ken was probably suggesting that you must be in the business of beautifying a lot of, ahem…. pictures???

Now, about the top 3 programs...??  This is just very difficult to answer without more precise parameters. And the others are right: it's hard to escape MS explorer (or replacements-- am considering Directory Opus), browsers (am using Maxthon), etc.

Anyway... if excluding the above and many others, the programs that I seem to be using the most ("timewise"... does that exist??), actively (so, no antivirus, firewall, etc.), are :

- Farr (because... it IS the best.  :) Launchy and the other "launchers" are a lot less powerful, sorry...  ;) )
- Clipboard Help + Spell (because it does everything I need in a clipboard enhancer...)
- MS Word 2003 (because I live in it... In Maxthon 1.6, X1, AHK and Outlook 2003 too, should I add... But... only three, only three....)

An unfair list, for sure...  As these won't do much without at least 10 other essential -- or at least vey important... -- pals.
