FWIW - I'm going to watch Google Chrome. However, if the early reports about the way in which it gathers and stores information about the dolt on the other end using it is true, they are surely flirting with legal action (class action suits, anti-trust laws, etc.). No?

Good freakin' god!!! How bad does this have to get before people will wake up?!

Ehtyar.

Mmph. Snort. Cough. <eyes flutter open> Wha...?

uninstalling now...

This scared me as well (even if it probably doesn't affect me anyway)...

Dang ehtyar and urlwolf! Give us a chance to post this! That's about five posts while I've been trying to get this one up. Sheesh  ;D

Hmmm... thanks for clarifying that, wr975! I'm happy with my setup, for now... (are software addicts really ever "satisfied"?), so will leave well enough alone.

Not me... I looked at the features list and realized that I don't need the features it offers. I use Unlocker to deal with devices that can't be removed...

I love USBDLM as well - it's absolutely essential to my backup routine, which involves Super Flexible File Synchronizer and four or five different USB devices. USBDLM means that I can set and forget my backup routines and just run them without worrying about the drive designations changing and messing up my backup.

Thanks for the pointer to USB Safely Remove, wr975. I'll have to check it out, though once you set USBDLM up it's rock solid and very, very simple to use. It's also unbelievably light on resources, so I've very little incentive to change!

Really love it. Really miss Roboform though, but it browsers so fast, especially javascript heavy sites like our bugtracking system (fogbugz).

This is what I'm waiting for as well - Roboform!

First vulnerability just have been found:

I knew it wouldn't take long...link.

Ehtyar.

Thanks for the heads up, guys. It's just a beta so not a big surprise. Hopefully Chrome will be developed and strengthened quickly, not stay in beta forever like GMail or Google Documents!

Nice find, Curt

- no, it wasn't, I am sad to say. I have removed Polestar

That's too bad, Curt. Thanks to you and Jim for following up so quickly on it - I'll avoid it!

Thanks guys! I had a lot of fun putting it together with mouser.

If I remember correctly, Nintendo ships their Wii's first to Japan/Asia then Europe and after that to the US nowadays.

I knew it! Conspriacy!

The application is not intrusive at all and so I'll keep it and see...

That's exactly where I am with it... Though I'd forgotten that it was there until I was notified of your reply to this thread! I'm going to have to make a conscious effort to get to know it  ;D

...once I had set ad-muncher to strip advertising from pages it feels no slower than Opera...

Dirhael, how did you set up Ad Muncher to remove ads from Google Chrome?

Thanks for the screenshot, Dirhael - that helps!

BTW the system requirements for running Spore are here: http://www.spore.com/what/specs_spore

It took me a while to find 'em, so I thought I'd post a direct link...

There's an interesting NY Times article about Spore in today's online edition: Gaming Evolves

Not bad... I personally find the interface a bit clunky, though like others I like how clean it is. Definitely worth keeping my eye on... I'll be more animated about this one when plug-ins are supported.

Hmm... installing it now. I need another browser like I need a hole in the head, but you only live once, right?

Thanks for the Toolbar skin pointer, Armando  That increases my appreciation of the application 10-fold! I wasn't too keen on the supplied skins, given that I run my XP box in Classic view mode. I can confirm, too, that AltDesk's RAM usage is minimal...

Sadly, I just can't see myself using this  :o

Hmm... that's interesting, Armando. May I *should* take a look at this (before the Giveaway is over!). My experience with these sorts of apps is similar to yours - I don't use them much, if at all, and they require significant resource allocation to run in the background waiting for those times when I *do* use them...

General Software Discussion / Re: Battery Icon Stuck ???
« Last post by Darwin on September 02, 2008, 02:43 PM »
What I *try* to remember to do, and what was recommended to me at some point in the past, is to run the notebook off battery occasionally so that the battery discharges to at least 50% and then let it charge again. I no longer remember where this tip comes from, but following it has kept my batteries more or less optimized for a year now (vs. having, say, 3 hours of battery drop to 1 hour after a year).

Hi Softland - thank you for your reply and clarification about NovaPDF's editing capabilities (or lack thereof). Hope this is added in the future - it's a great feature!

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package

VIPRE seems to update *about* once a day. This is one of the things people posting on the internet have criticized Sunbelt for. My beef intitially was that the process of updating the first few times seemed to take forever. Once everything settled down, though, it was quick enough.

Hmm... did a deep scan on my Dual Core notebook with Webroot and it took 53 minutes to scan 110GB.

My increasingly flaky Win2k machine has given up the ghost again (I think the video card is on its way out), so for now the trial is on hold. I have two current licences for Webroot, both of which have over a year left, so I'm not too interested in running the trial on either my XP or my Vista notebook. However, I am very impressed with what I did get to see.

I still wonder what the people who absolutely MUST travel with their laptop do...?

Good point - it always *seems* like a great idea to take my notebook, but I rarely do much with it and no longer even bother taking it out in the cabin. In fairness, when I've traveled for work, I've used it extensively. However, I've never really used it when I've been on vacation...
