Did anybody watch the game last night?

lol j/k

Yeah I have seen this change, and have actually ignored some of my own topics due to this (Replies have turned into conversation I have no interest in and are not really part of what was being said)

Ill admit, I have been known to derail a topic or two myself, but 90% of the time, thats because I am trying to diffuse a heated flame war, with some light-hearted comedy.

FlatPress is a good option in my opinion but I wouldn't go for flat files because of a host, for other reasons like preference or needs sure but not because of a host.

Agreed

Even if you like your host and dont want to move, there are quite a few sites that will give you free Databases with remote access that you can use for websites.

I know some folks will scoff at the idea of a database-less Flat File Database CMS but, if it's a small-ish site, you can always use something like FlatPress.  That's what I use for my Skwire Empire site.

Thar...fixed your post :P

Um, you pretty much answered your own question...

You should use a template (Easily found online) Example

Secondly...Get a new website host...who the hell offers website hosting with no database installations? - There are more than plenty that do, and are absolutely free :)

A lot of sites were inaccessible for me today.
I tried Justice's link earlier and it said it was "just me" - but it obviously wasn't "just me" if this thread is here ;-)

Oddly enough, it now says google (it's default site) is down, even though it isnt...

Great service but lacking in some areas...with mine you can see if the server is online but slow to respond, or actually down (Quite helpful in some cases)

Oh, and for those who want it, you can also check FTP, SMTP, and POP3 :)

I would question who set the requirement to use Win9x. You've got all sorts of licensing problems there since it is deprecated by Microsoft. Even if you *wanted* to BUY licenses, I'm not sure you could. Someone at Microsoft might donate licenses to a charity, though then *they* have problems since they are donating licenses for a deprecated product that they no longer maintain, so would have you sign some disclaimer that you know security issues may exist (and they do!).

I set the requirement to install 9x on some machines purely because of the specs of some, being very low.  The machines we had where simply donated to us, so we had no control over any of the hardware.

These machines have now all (the ones that worked anyway) found good homes :)

Just thought I would share a link that is sorta handy to bookmark in case you can't access DoCo for any reason and it seems like the site is down...

Yes I know there are other services that do this, but meh...I got bored :)

I'm sure it's fine but you don't want to think you are calling your bank and instead call a fraudster and give out personal information. That's why I was asking. :) Just research the phone number before you call it.

Great point from Justice there...If you are calling somebody who will require personal info, perhaps Google the local rate number that you have found and see if it brings anything up :)

How do you find out when calling an 0870 number what the equivalent local one is? AFAIK it doesn't show up on your phone. So if it is not possible how are these phone numbers added / verified?

No idea to be honest, but I managed to get a LOAD of local rate numbers for the Post Office Customer Service Dept. using that site...Perhaps people find out who owns the 0845, then searches the Phonebook or something for it?...Pure guessing lol

http://www.saynoto0870.com/search.php

Welcome to the SAYNOTO0870.COM website

The site lists many well known companies, and their equivalent geographical numbers.

 Alternatives listed for 0500, 0800, 0808, 0842, 0843, 0844, 0845, 0870, 0871, 0872 and 0873 numbers.
The SAYNOTO0870.COM web site has been featured on BBC's Working Lunch TV programme, Five's The Gadget Show, BBC Radio 2 (Jeremy Vine Show), BBC Radio Norfolk, and also appeared in many newspapers & publications, including The Guardian, Which Magazine, Readers Digest, and many more.

Many people don't realise that there are many phone providers offering cheaper calls to standard telephone numbers (those beginning with 01, 02 or 03), which don't apply to 0842, 0843, 0844, 0845, 0870, 0871, 0872 or 0873 telephone numbers. - Please see the links page and click on Cheapest Call Provider for price details. This shows that by using multiple providers, you can reduce your call cost on standard telephone numbers to as little as 5p fixed cost (regardless of duration), whereas the cheapest provider to 0871 numbers during the day that I am aware of charges 10p/min (+ 12.5p connection fee [with BT]) to call.

Worst still some companies that use these numbers are actually receiving a cut of the phone call costs.

If you have an 'inclusive landline calls' phone package, then it is very rare that 0844, 0845, 0870, and 0871 numbers are all included in your 'free minutes' allocation, unlike normal numbers. Many mobile phone packages also exclude freephone 0500, 0800 and 0808 numbers for your bundled minutes. BT and some other companies are starting to include 0845 and 0870, but this only applies to certain packages, and does not apply to 0844 and 0871 numbers.

Many companies advertise a separate number that can be used when calling from abroad - This usually begins in the format +44 - There is nothing to stop you using this number from the UK (as it is a normal rate telephone call), and will be included in any inclusive minutes provided by your landline or mobile phone provider. Many others will give you a standard number if you ask.

This site is all about listing these numbers, saving you money, without having to pay additional charges. To get started and find a particular number, please click on the 'Search to find an alternative number' link at the top of the page.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the site.  Please continue to add any new numbers as and when you find them.

Very handy website indeed! - I use Skype for my outbound calls and I ONLY purchase a local rate (UK Numbers) subscription for it...mainly because having a landline phone actually plugged in, tempts me to call mobiles and such, and end up running up huge phone bills...

This website is VERY handy for those of you who have phone contracts, or use Skype + Local Rate Subscription and cannot call anything other than a local rate number (01, 02 or 03)

All phone numbers seem to be added by users, and maintained by everyone else, so when a number is dead, it will be reported and updated by other users...very handy indeed.

That link only seems to mention things about potential scam WEBSITES and nothing about SOFTWARE

However, you might be pleased to know, your not the only one who is irritated by this:

The above link brings up a whole bunch of other posts about this...most seem to have started around Feb of this year, so maybe from whatever update was released in Feb? (Not a Chrome user, so don't know)

If your still PO'ed about it...I'll say to you, what I say to everyone who has a problem with FF or Chrome...

The problem facing charges against places like the PirateBay, is that .torrent files themselves are NOT illegal, and in fact, many respected developers (Mainly games as they are large files) use them so their community can take the bulk of the bandwidth required to host such large files, and receive such massive amounts of download requests (Doing so can greatly reduce hosting costs).

Yo Dawg. We heard you like torrents, so we put a torrent in your torrent so you can torrent while you torrent.

-Stephen66515 (March 05, 2012, 04:44 PM)

IF you're working with a registered non-profit or charity (i.e. 501(c)(3) status non-profit or library ), and involved with their technology, you'll want to be aware of these guys.

Microsoft works with this group too. Good source for super-inexpensive software, etc.

 8)

Wow...Bookmarked!

If the machines are OEM, you may get lucky with:

C:\Windows\options\cabs

Windows setup files were frequently kept there in the 9x days.

Just a thought.

None of the machines actually have an OS on them :(

On another note...if anybody has some old tech (Doesn't really matter what it is, or how old it is, just so long as it works) and wants it to go to a good cause (and also willing to package and send), let me know.

I will inform you via PM of which charity this is, their Charity number, and any other information you need :)

Btw, this is in the UK (Just so any kind donors from Abroad are aware) ^_^

Yeah that's the plan...Linux on those without COA's and Winblows windows on those with them.
-Stephen66515 (March 05, 2012, 04:36 PM)

Silly question, but how many machines? And what are they being used for?

Theres around 200-300 machines...I expect only around 50 of those to have a COA.

They have been donated by some company to a charity I help with, and I have been tasked with formatting, re-installing, and checking every single machine lol - The machines will then be either donated to those who cannot afford a computer, or sold for a very low price to those willing to donate a small sum (and also could otherwise not afford) for it :)
