Not to mention plumber's numbers where $150 turns out to be really $375

And air conditioner air filters that aren't the specified size.  You have to know the fudge factor when buying them, especially online.

He surely provided most of the depth on the show.  The struggle of man to master emotions without totally abandoning them.  Some other themes to be sure such as Viet Nam War analogies, absolute power corrupting etc..  But the Spock embodiment of the emotion vs reason struggle is timeless.  I guess that he was imposing physically helped him carry off the role.. the whole Vulcan strength bit etc..

My guess would be that decimal based would be considered the default.  Therefore if one sees 0xFF on the page and says "two hundred and fifty five," one would be correct.

Well I was really asking if there was a logical way to speak such numbers WITHOUT converting them first to base 10 and speaking in base 10.

I'm self taught so I'm not sure of the conventions.  But my assumption would be anything spoken without the base specifier would be assumed to be decimal.  So if the written number was 0x0F I would either say "F Hex" or "fifteen."

I guess if it was a long decimal base number and I didn't want to take the time to figure out what it was, like 103023345665432445 I would just read out the digits and the listener would assume it was decimal unless specified otherwise.

Solipists unite!

Seems like the society would be highly inefficient.  Every person in attendance would have to take attendance even though it would always be 1.  Likewise all matters put to a vote would pass 1 to 0.  That is unless there are procedural rules requiring a quorum.  If the quorum is greater than 1 nothing would ever happen.

The single solipsist in attendance is likely to be a reformed procrastinator.

Far be it from me to inject a real question into this thread, but here is a real question:
In our normal base 10, we have a protocol for SPEAKING large numbers, so 154 is "one hundred and fifty four".
Using the same logic, what would be the generic method for similarly SPEAKING large numbers in other bases?

My guess would be that decimal based would be considered the default.  Therefore if one sees 0xFF on the page and says "two hundred and fifty five," one would be correct.  Speaking a number in another base would require specifying the base as in "FF Hex" or "three seven seven octal."  But perhaps the math experts here know for certain.

Not necessarially. For that to be reliable you would have to know in advance how the guards would respond to your provocation

Since the setup is an Indiana Jones type scenario I think it's safe to assume any attempt to attack a guard would be met with lethal force.  The attack would be interpreted as an attempt to pass without solving the riddle.

Mensa problems

This makes me think of a Columbo episode where the murderer bumps off a fellow member of a genius society.  He gives Columbo a riddle to solve.  I can't remember the details.  But it has something to do with a bunch of gold ingots, one of which is fake.  There is a scale that gives a printed readout.  IOW a card with the weight so you cannot do stuff like stand on it and have somebody hand you an ingot at a time.  You get to make 2 measurements to determine which is the fake ingot.

Something like that.  It's pretty nebulous to search on all that. I haven't been able to get the language of the riddle.

But to your point Ren, I always felt in Chemistry class in high school that there were "observations" inserted into the exams so that only a coached candidate could get 100%.  I mean some of the cockamamie things "observed" were such that no normal person would think of them.  You had to read the prep notes to know what to answer or you would miss 2 or 3 on every question.

Edit:  I found the Mensa Riddle and Solution

IIRC who you ask is irrelevant, you ask one guard what the other would say and then do the opposite. Because the liar would give the wrong answer (by nature), and the truth teller would give the liars lie.

Its easier to just kick them in the shin and ask if it hurt. Then you know which one is telling the truth and which one isn't.

Of course your solution is less likely to piss them off.

Plus assuming they are guarding something of great value implies they have weapons at the ready to prevent entry and/or dispatch intruders.  But now that you mention it, a simpler solution might be asking either "If I try to kick you in the nuts will you kill me?"  If the guard answers "no" he's the liar.

Ok, now I get it.  I remembered the part about asking what the other would say.  But the logic escaped me.  Thanks.  :)

I don't understand the reasoning bit.  But do you know the riddle about 2 guards to a treasure(like an Indiana Jones riddle) .. one guard has to always answer truthfully.  The other guard must always answer with a lie.  You have one question to determine which is which.  What is the question and which guard do you ask?

Edit:  I don't remember the solution.  That's why I'm asking.

So you can effectively have one master browser and all other iterations are slaves.

Are you sure you're not using the old sync?  In the new one, effectively everything is a merge unless you delete the online db.  See mozilla forums for others saying the same.

ReRun 2.5.2.0

I added a bit of error checking and some retries if the window handle is not retrieved successfully.  Also if the icon cannot be inserted in a button it now assumes it is because it is not a conventional exe with the icon resource embedded.  In such cases the button is disabled.  So there will still be the occasional blank button.  But they should be much more rare.

On a first, quick, test it picked up
  • Display Fusion
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Photoshop
  • InDesign
  • Acrobat
  • RightNote
  • DOpus
  • VPN client manager
  • OED (Second Edition)
Pretty good!

So I guess it now is all about testing, how old a Firefox must be, to run on my laptop.

I guess you have tried with all AddOns disabled?  Also you could try CometBird.  It stopped at v. 11.  I find many FF AddOns work but not all.

Edit:  How about the "use hardware acceleration where available" setting?  Perhaps the Laptop should run with the setting disabled.

The only surprising thing I find about FF Sync is that it doesn't scramble the stuff up.
-IainB
I guess it depends how you use it.  But Mozilla has several requests like mine for overwrite variations of send and receive rather than just everything a merge.  How I was using it was to install FF in a VM, then set up sync to have all bookmarks and addons.  But I kept getting blowback to my Windows host OS FF.  Stuff like duplicate Bookmarks menu entries, and just a general mess.

The work-around was to kill the online account an create a new one.  Not very smooth.  I had similar problems with chromium sync.  I think it should work more like the SyncPlaces FF AddOn where you could send and receive with overwrite.

Shades idea of trying a portable version of FF (if such a thing exists) is a good one.

PortableApps.com  FF is one of the featured programs on the page.  I have FF Portable 35.01.  The cool thing is you can just copy the whole folder into a Windows Virtual Machine guest to have your AddOns and bookmarks without using Sync.  More often than not once you run a few FF in various places sync just scrambles everything into a pile.

I have uploaded the latest bug fix.  Hopefully this will cure "blank button syndrome" where some application windows returned NULL handles.

It might also be worth installing an older version of FF.  Try something that was released in 2009.  If it runs gangbusters after importing the same profile it could be some compatibility issue.  Also try disabling all AddOns.  I found just a week or so ago that Session Save and Restore was causing all sorts of nini-hangs.

What FF are you running now?

Its like a rootkit

Seems like the countermeasure would need to be burned in code.  Like the only way to update your controller code would be to physically change out a chip.  I wonder if the military has some scheme already to get around the problem?

I could not get FVD SpeedDial to import dials in FF 36.0.  I tried a couple of others and hit on Super Start

I'm starting to really like it.  It is simple and the page loads fast when set as Home Page.  It's extremely easy to make groups or catagories of dials.  Drag a dial into a similar one and it creates a group.  Click the Rename Group to name it.

Another thing I like is left click by default opens the dial in another tab in the background.

This Firefox install is only a couple of days old.  I hope it reacts as snappy when it's a couple of months old.  :)

General Software Discussion / Firefox 36.0 stable
« Last post by MilesAhead on February 24, 2015, 01:03 PM »
Well I'm running Firefox 36.0 stable 32 bit.  It is running faster than CometBird but then again every time I do a fresh install of Firefox and it has empty folders to work with, it's snappy for about 2 weeks.

I hope this http/2 stuff is more than just smoke.  As usual I can't seem to get it to accept SpeedDial FVD.

I haven't tried any of the YouTube html5 stuff yet.

@cranioscopical  please try this one out on PS when you have a chance.  I changed it to get the root window.  This should work better with MDI applications.  I've attached a zip

Edit:  I found that some windows would return a NULL handle.  So I added a couple more calls to get the window handle if NULL.  Also if all else fails it seems to help to run the program As Administrator.

Edit:  Note that putting a shortcut in the StartUp folder set to Run As Administrator won't work without using the task scheduler.  It may if you have UAC enabled in which case you will have to click the prompt.  There seems to easy way around it so I just pinned to Taskbar and run in manually.  A pita but I try to avoid using the Task Scheduler.  There's just too many triggers and settings to go wrong.

Yet another Edit:  :)  I think I have improved the window handle detection.  This should get rid of "blank button syndrome."  Please let me know if PS works with it.  :)
