The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / new year - new start. time to try again.
« Last post by nudone on December 25, 2006, 01:52 PM »
the new year is nearly here so it's traditionally the time for making fresh resolutions - or just repeating the same ones you made last time around and then gave up with.

i'm here to make my pledge again that i'll stick to an action plan during january and hopefully beyond. making an announcement that i'm going to do a set list of tasks seems to be the only way i can get such things completed - otherwise i drift off into other projects. i'm exceptional at keeping busy but terrible at staying focused.

so, if anyone would like to join me (again) in promising they will get a specific task done in january then please do sign up here. i think we did really well last time as a group and i know for certain that i did a great deal better than i normally do solo.

i've not actually decided what i'm going to set myself yet but i've got a few projects to pick from.

come on, pick that thing you've been putting off and commit to tackling/completing it. there's plenty of advice to be found in the GOE section of the forum so there's no excuse for not being capable - and just making that small vow here that you'll do it should be enough to ensure that you succeed.

here's another movie tutorial by Chris George. it's looooong (over an hour) and slow going in parts but does explain a few more character animation tips in flash.

sounds advice, f0dder. i hardly ever see my pc booting up but when i do i'm pretty disgusted with how long it takes. making a drink is just about the right time length.

Developer's Corner / tutorial movie - how to animate a character in flash
« Last post by nudone on December 25, 2006, 04:08 AM »
Came across this today...

http://www.adobe.com...imate_character.html

If you've got a free hour it's worth looking at to get a good idea of animating a character in flash.

I'm pleased to see that what I did is pretty much the right way of doing it. I had been wondering if I was doing things the wrong/slow way but if it's good enough for Chris George then it's good enough for me. (check out his website www.mudbubble.com or blog www.keyframer.com)

He does have a few good tips that I think will help the next version of cody's animation.

i may dig deeper into flash and actionscript and will post my findings here - if they seem of worth.

here's the link to the cody animation pack i did https://www.donation...88.msg46862#msg46862 i'll probably use that same thread to post updates to the cody animation that can then be downloaded and used by anyone.

Official Announcements / cody flash animation pack (walk v01)
« Last post by nudone on December 23, 2006, 07:57 AM »
here's a simple flash animation file that can be used for importing into other flash animations - if you'd like to have a walking cody. it's very basic, only a profile view at the moment.

the idea is for it to be used with flash games so consider it a first test file - if anyone feels adventurous and wants something more advanced that they'd like to use in a game then post your suggestions.

i've included an example .swf file walk animation. the zip file contains the .fla that can be edited.

(example animation is at 24fps - the .fla file is set at 12fps.)

that's nice Gothi[c], but if you are inclined to do it again, i'll send you the model sheet to work from - officially approved by mouser  :)

you should then be able to get a 'standard' looking cody in 3D.

as suggested by jgpaiva,  a more face on version of the F key.

On the running man icon, there are some black pixels in the man's figure, i think that's the "artifacts" that mouser meant.

ah yes, i'm sure you are right. but the black pixels were there to provide contrast in those areas so that the figure would stand out more - if you look close you'll see i added a nose. just for my own amusement, of course.

i can remove them but i'll let TucknDar's figure stand as the only running man icon - no need to have several versions really.

i'll do another F key version later so that it's angled better for the 16x16 icon.

not entirely sure if this is what you were asking for (i don't have the ugly non rounded running man icon anyway if that is what you meant).

i've removed the background to the 'farr key' icon to match lanux128's request - and made a second version.

(i'll email the icon files to you, mouser.)

damn. okay, when was the last time you saw a fully limbed stick man character in the sytem tray?

here's a slightly different version of TucknDar's idea.

i like the running man design - it's what i understand to mean 'find and run robot'. it's distinct and doesn't resemble the other tray icons i've seen (when was the last time you saw a humamoid figure in the tray)?

but i think TucknDar is right about the colour. blue doesn't stand out so much - the purple background is a good idea - i can't remember ever seeing that colour in my tray before.

as long as it looks kind of 'normal' without any skin thing i'll be very happy. but then, if skinning is the only way, i can live with that - as long as it's not that big fat ugly xp style titlbar.

as for the F icon - we can make the background a bit more fancy if that's the way things go - if desired.

i wanted to use software to organise myself but as yet it has not really happened.

mylifeorganized contains my ideas and hope to get things done one day stuff - but i really don't use it properly other than as a tree type organiser. the problem is that i never seem to have time to find out how to use the program properly.

surfulator contains all the junk i collect off of the net i think will be valuable to look at - eventually. these are usually tutorials or tips on how to do things.

desktop note programs come and go on my machine - i quickly become blind to them so just uninstall them - then eventually install them again after thinking what a good idea they are.

backs of business cards and post-it notes and scrap bits of paper are what collect everything else i write down.

so, i appear to be pretty badly organised at present. my brain seems to remain the only calendar or planner i use. i need to get back on top of things soon.

onenote still sounds intriguing and maybe some kind of mindmap method.

i've just measured the size of my system tray icons...

they are 16x16 as you would expect. so something strange is going on with the farr icon.

looks like tray icons may be 15x15 :(

if you can specify exactly which icon is used in the tray then we could design a 16x16 pixel icon that looks good when reduced to 15x15 by the tray.

you then use the standard 16x16 for the titlebars, etc and then use the special 15x15 just for the tray.

after playing around with round background and keyboard key images i concluded you can't see much at 16x16 pixels. as you can see (can't see) the square version i've included here is still hard to see at 16x16.

i think it might be better to stick with the running man icon but maybe with a more up to date 'rounded' background. i think TucknDar's 8 ball icon looks very nice but it's also going to lose detail at 16x16 pixels.

i admire the rawness of it. especially the zoom bit - reminds me of the starship enterprise in star trek's title sequence.
