One of the things i love about the people on this forum is they take the time to do some research and find useful information, and then share their results.

if it was the hard drive, you could buy a nice new fast hd (10k rpm), install it in your pc or in an external usb enclosure, then clone current drive onto new drive, then replace new with old.  no reinstall of OS needed.

running chkdsk to check for bad hard disk sectors is a good idea -- i had a laptop that could become really really slow (especially at boot) and it was traced to dying hard drive.  not sure why that causes this behavior but it did.

it almost sounds as if you have a virus scanner doing a full system scan at bootup.
or else some other thing like a disk defrag at every bootup.

if you bring up the task manager (ctrl+alt+del) and sort by cpu usage at boot up, do you see a culprit program using a lot of cpu for those first 10 minutes?

there are also tools for analyzing startup times but it doesn't really sound like that is your problem to me.

Don't forget Cody has his own website (link removed), though he and Nick Pearson (nudone) are currently doing maintenance on it.

I have a television-to-lcd monitor adapter thing (KWorld TVBox 1680ex); let's you watch tv through your existing lcd monitor.

works well just don't need it anymore.  best use is if you have a monitor with both digital and analog inputs, and can use your digital connection for your pc, and analog connection for this -- then it's easy to switch between them.

info here: http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16815260010 (price new is $60).

any supporting dc member who wants it message me, i'll pick one person at random and send it.

thanks for the nice words steve --
indeed the autohiding behavior on LaunchBar Commander just plain sucks.  I hope to improve it.
i personally don't use the autohide feature and wouldn't recommend it since it seems unreliable and slow to unhide.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA? simple startup manager with timer
« Last post by mouser on March 21, 2008, 08:46 PM »
you posted in the right place.. could be a useful idea too.

might be nice though to be able to provide a list of programs and then configure for each one whether after the timeout it will run by default or not run by default.

so on startup the user would be presented with a list of programs (maybe with a checkbox next to each one that was either checked or unchecked based on configuration), and then an OK button.  If no action is taken then it will timeout after a few seconds and run the checked programs.

I think there are a few programs (and websites) that do this and i look forward to seeing what DC people know about.
I have to confess i've thought quite a bit in the past about writing such a program.

people should make a zip with a proper .alias file and the helper exe (USBDeview.exe) for things like this they want to share, it will make it easier for people to download and install.

Let's stick to technical discussions for the most and leave the rest for when it's really called for -- otherwise people are going to burn out and new visitors will wonder why people are getting so worked up over stuff that doesn't seem to call for it.

There are going to be plenty of opportunities in the future for all of us to express strong opinions and get worked up and debate vigorously, etc.  Let's just save our energies for those times and get back to constructive stuff.

wordzilla has some history with gri that makes them not get along, but i agree that in keeping with the spirit of DC, wordzilla could have been more diplomatic and less incendiary.  let's remember to keep things civil even when we disagree.

i'm not much of a c# person but something must be wrong.  do you need to randomize the random number generator?

well one thing we are definitely going to do is set up a backup emergency forum (and website mirror) so that if the site goes down again, everyone will know where to go while the main site is unreachable.  it's not the perfect solution but i think it would help.

DesktopCoral / Re: Always reset
« Last post by mouser on March 19, 2008, 08:38 AM »
can you try this:
exit program
copy all files from desktopcoral directory into a directory in your own MyDocuments area
run it from there, try changing settings and exiting.
see if it saves the ini file then and remembers settings.
