I've been using that since Win '95. And I'm starting to become an old guy.  ;D

I prefer the classic start menu.

Maybe you can replicate it, but what is the deeper sense of all that new stuff if you just want to emulate the old stuff with it?
(No, I'll stick with XP and Vista for now ...)

True Launch Bar ... yay, payware. But thanks.

All these launchers ...

I have different ways to start applications. A few basic ones are in my Autoruns anyway, Thunderbird and Firefox are launched via the Quickstart bar (another reason why 7 sucks, it doesn't even have one), Vim, SFK and FAR are launched from Console² (which resides on Ctrl-Alt-Space), eMule and Gamers.IRC are usually started from Win+R and the left ones are somewhere in my start menu as I rarely need them...

No, I don't have an actual concept for this. I just got used to work this way.

James Gosling? That guy desecrated Emacs, so I basically like him.  :P

"Hidden pointers" are no pointers.

Because pointers were found to be confusing and usually leads to computer crash if misused...
Have you ever worked with them? Maybe they are confusing, but very useful at times.

It seems that you are talking about destructors...
Not necessarily, delete works anywhere...

Well, I'm not that professional ...

Two of the various projects I'm regularly working on:
1) Gamers.IRC, written in a scripting language
2) eMule beba, written in a programming language

Developer's Corner / Wanted: Comparison of code beautifiers
« Last post by Tuxman on November 15, 2009, 08:37 AM »
I am currently digging through stuff like astyle, but I don't really have the time and knowledge to see which of the several code beautifiers does the most interesting stuff. Is there some kind of a comparison?

There is no way to explicitly declare pointers. In Java, everything is sort of a reference. (AFAIK.)

Where does Java provide more functionality? It doesn't even support pointers.

Best Text Editor / Re: Is this serious?
« Last post by Tuxman on November 14, 2009, 06:47 PM »
As I just read that editor review again, I'd like to add my 2 cents:

Other editors had "macro recording" as a pro. The Vim entry says "custom vim script". Now this is not about "too hard to figure out". It uses vimscript indeed, but it can also handle macros of any complexity. Type q (without a colon), add a register for that macro (like "a"), enter a bunch of Vim commands, press q again and you can play the macro any time by @a and @@. So what?

(Just to clarify that.)

Ah, and Vim's GUI might not be that impressive. But what do you need a toolbar or even a menubar for at all?
Most people here use Ctrl+S to save something, I guess. They won't use a toolbar for it. So why do they care if Vim's toolbar and menu are ugly and too short and whatever?

(Mine doesn't have both of them anyway.)

Its help system was another "con". Hell, what do you expect? Screenshots?
You can even use :helpgrep. Not many other editors allow this.

Having been convinced by a lot of positive reviews (also on DC :P), GVim is my default editor on Windows right now (to be honest, it has been for a couple of months now). Notepad++ (its "predecessor") is my "alternative" for some special purposes, but it is not registered with anything anymore. Vim could do everything in a better and/or more flexible way.

jm2c, as stated above.
And sorry for the bump.

Hmm, since Java *may* use less memory than C++
... if you don't count the VM ...

, and *may* run faster than C++
... once the VM has started ...

See?

it just means that it may use more memory
That's what I call inefficient.

Java might have a garbage collector, but its major disadvantage is that you just can't collect garbage yourself, so it tends to memory hogs of a quite notable amount.

My favorite programming language is Java.
Oh God why?  ;D

It's a bit like C/C++ in many ways.
... except that you can write efficient and fast code in C++.

I'm curious about delphi... is it also an open source language?
Not actually. http://en.wikipedia....i/Embarcadero_Delphi

what's the difference with a scripting language and a programming language?
Scripting languages are usually made for a certain purpose.

... which is multiplied with a constant factor every time something gets "remastered", see the latest Beatles remasters with the cut-off peaks...

FLAC is an open, license-free format, MP3 is not. Unless they'll change that, they'll fail.

These wizards have the impressive disadvantage that they don't allow an actual modification of the chosen settings. Ease is not a pro here.

OMG, MP3 lossless. There is WavPack, there is FLAC  :-* and there is Monkey's Audio. MP3 is for instant, mobile playing, not for archiving. (And the MP3 codec is still not license-free.)

I wonder when there will be "Ogg Vorbis HD" ...

I've found I really like Mogwai's music. Or at least what I've heard of it so far.
Yep, postrock is an acquired kind of music ...

Fine, too: The Stolen Babies.
