Id ask for their bank PIN number...when told no, I would say...once you give me that, you can have my facebook password (To the account I am going to setup specifically for this purpose, where all posts will be set to never show to anybody, I will add no friends, and like every dodgy underground network I can find).

I had Windows Vista for a very short period of time before downgrading to XP.  Vista annoyed the hell out of me, barely anything worked without an hours worth of fighting with it.  In the end, I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate and then back down to Windows 7 Premium (Came with a new computer, never got around to changing back to ultimate as there seems to be no noticeable difference between the two).

I played with the preview of Win8 and was not impressed.  Felt like Aston Shell on top of Win7, but less usable, and less fun to use.  I have a hatred for anything "touch", mainly because I am heavy handed and have broken many phone screens due to this, but also because I like buttons, and without buttons, I feel lost.  The day Windows goes 100% touch screen, I'll move to linux, and when they move, I'll go to wherever can allow me to use a good old fashioned keyboard and mouse.

Touch Screen is hell, and my mom always told me never to play with fire.

Would have been a little more believable if it took more effort to get off the ground. :-)

(Edit: Sorry, I'm a dick for not playing along. It's a decent enough hoax after all.)

Yeah, but still...Wow at the thought of it! haha

Speedtest.net = 96.8mbps down, 12.4up 7ms ping

We must have the same ISP. They are who I use to have 100Mbit downstream, 5Mbit upstream. Latency of course depends on how far your packet is to travel, and the remote server, but latency out of their network and their peering arrangements seem EXCELLENT. I've noticed they use many of several service providers themselves, so they make sure your stuff gets there as fast as it can. They've really built a good network, I must say. It is sad the company has always been teetering on the verge of bankruptcy. What's great is we are talking rural TN. So, the USA Internet is getting better, fast.

My ISP Is Virgin Media in the UK :) - We get free upgrades to 200mbps soon! :D

I just use my cheap android phone as a wifi hotspot for when im on-the-go or stuck in a car for long periods of time.  Quite handy as my phone allows you to turn it into a wifi hotspot, using the stock firmware (With or without security {PSK/WEP etc})

Its not brilliant in terms of speed (3G) but it gets the job done, and does allow me to watch youtube videos and such, and can also grab streams from my home PC without any real buffer issues :)

Living Room / Windows 8 reportedly set for October debut
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on March 19, 2012, 07:40 PM »

Microsoft reportedly will finish work on Windows 8 by summer, setting the stage to release the next version of its flagship operating system sometime around October.

Bloomberg, citing "people with knowledge of the schedule," also reports that there will be fewer than five devices running the ARM system-on-a-chip architecture at launch. Those ARM chips allow for thinner, lighter tablet devices, something that Microsoft hopes will help it cut into Apple's iPad's huge lead in the tablet market. The Cupertino rival just disclosed that it sold more than 3 million of its latest iPad since the third-generation gadget debuted Friday.

The report confirms the timing that most analysts have been expecting. Bloomberg notes that Microsoft will lay out the details of the release schedule at an industry event in early April.

A Microsoft spokeswoman declined comment on the report.

Anyone had an experience with this?

Looks pretty full featured, but perhaps has "too many" features for them all to work as well as one would hope.

Living Room / Re: Obtaining Windows OS ISO's
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on March 17, 2012, 02:01 PM »
I would recommend against ReactOS, it is still alpha stage, and even some of the OS features don't work properly (such as configuring the taskbar/start menu/file explorer.) It's a nice idea/experiment, but still has a way to go before it is ready for regular users to use without getting frustrated with it.

On the slower machines, is Windows a requirement or could you use linux instead? Something that does not have all too much for system requirements such as Xubuntu, Mint LXDE, or Lubuntu, or even something lighter like Tiny Core? Using Win9x seems like a bad idea because it opens the users to so many security risks, and no way to update or patch them.

Windows wasn't a 'requirement per-se but when you know the end user is 99% likely not to know much about computing, its pretty much the only logical approach.  Any decent linux distro that would be useful for that, would not run on the systems they would be installed on (Few machines where 256 RAM, 1Ghz CPU lol)

I've noticed this change or shift in attitude also, and not just in this forum.  I can't explain it, i've asked others about it, i don't get it.  There does seem to have been a change in mood or attitude or something in the last couple of years.

I'm seeing a lot more anger most places I'm looking.

People seem to get angry much more easily than they used to, and stay angry a lot longer once they do.

This, definitely.  And people seem to have less tolerance for dissenting opinions, or even discussion of those positions.

I like a good debate of positions.  But have been getting less of that, because at the end, it seems that there is more anger at than appreciation of differences.  Sad.

Less Tolerance? WHO HAS LESS TOLERANCE? I DON'T HAVE LESS TOLERANCE AND I COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH YOU AND HATE YOU FOR YOUR OPINION AND NOW WANT TO GO OUT AND COMMIT GENOCIDE AND SHOOT MYSELF IN THE LEFT KNEECAP AND DO SOME OTHER CRAZY STUFF...

 ;D

No "Economic" things could cause me to be any less random and chilled out! - Why let this shit get you down...

I think the world just needs to get its priorities in order  :D

+1

I've stopped going to two sites I used to like because of what happened once they implemented Karma.

I'll probably stop coming here too if Karma ever shows up. 8)

I won't stop coming, but it will certainly stop me from wanting to post.

Oh god... here we go again... Some yahoo blathering about censorship blah blah blah...

http://dailycaller.c...ers-with-pants-down/

Internet pornography could conceivably become a thing of the past if Rick Santorum is elected president.

...

To black out foreign sites, Santorum would likely need legislative action requiring Internet service providers to use “a mandatory filter set up by the government or by the service providers,” said Volokh.

But the government could also prosecute individual citizens who view porn, and already has the legal authority to do it.

“Although the Supreme Court says private possession is constitutionally protected, it has said that private receipt of [pornography] is not protected,” noted Volokh. “You can’t prosecute them all … but you can find certain types of pornography that are sufficiently unpopular” for easy convictions, he explained.

How many data centers would instantly go bankrupt if porn were banned?

How many men would commit suicide...How many sluts would go bankrupt...How much water would the world save by the lower amount of socks needing to be washed?  :-\

I just think that discussions should try to stay on topic, and be conducted with an eye towards their permanent existence on the site as a knowledge repository.

I agree with staying on topic as much as possible. But I sort of disagree with the "for posterity" concept.

Informal discussions are (to me) exactly that. Informal discussions. IMO if something is really worth preserving for posterity (as opposed to "Until the next version of Windows comes out.") it really should be written up as a white paper of some sort (if it's static) - or relegated to a wiki if it's more of a 'living' document topic.

There are differences of opinion on this, but I've found tightening up on open forum areas has a bad tendency to reduce peoples willingness to think out loud and share what they're thinking. The minute people start thinking too much about posterity, a lot of the openness and willingness to explore ideas goes out the door. People start drafting formal comments, watching their words, and looking over their shoulders. From there it's only a short hop to posturing and making speeches.

I see open forum topic areas as brainstorming sessions. And first rule of  those is: don't disrupt the flow. Most of the really interesting insights I've seen in the forum came out of people ranging off and around the topic fairly widely before it re-coalesced into something larger than what it originally started out as. I'd hate to see that go away.

But that's me. ;D 8)

Just me, or anybody else think that a wiki on DC would be goddamn awesome?...

Get a new website host...who the hell offers website hosting with no database installations? - There are more than plenty that do, and are absolutely free :)
-Stephen66515 (March 14, 2012, 05:46 PM)

can you suggest me one? I already have mydomain.com in a specific nameserver

ofcourse without any kind of ads or other things like that, or downtimes, etc, it must be totally professional

I could mention several, but due to never using any free hosts myself, I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending anyone.

However, The two most prominent are: www.webs.com and www.moonfruit.com - Webs.com is not ad-free (For free hosting) but I am pretty sure moonfruit Is.

www.freehostia.com seems to be pretty high on the list of known free-hosts as well, however, I am being lazy and cannot be bothered checking if they have ad's or not :)

NB: I have never used Webs.com, Moonfruit.com or Freehostiw.com so cannot possibly recommend either of them on any other merit than they are the three names that I recognize the most.

Birthday resolution - chill out a bit!

Anyone fancy a beer or two?
-Carol Haynes (March 15, 2012, 10:48 AM)

Wish I still drank alcohol...lmao

But yeah, I think, as a whole, we need to get DC back on track...to do which, we have to all remember what DC is about (Everyone is already in-the-know about this)

The beauty of it is; is that we ALL know we have done wrong here, which means we can get back to smooth sailing without much problem.  Should certainly help lowering the amount of "useless stuff" that gets posted, causing strange and obscure Google Keywords for DC lol

I think I agree with you, and I think it just means that we all have to remember that even as we become comfortable with each other enough to engage in casual discussions within topics -- the forum is also meant to be a repository of information for other people to find and read.

As such, a real attempt should be made to give threads useful topics, and to stay on topic.

There is always the irc chat channel for when people just want to hang out and talk about nonsense :)

May I propose an off-topic section on the forum, for those who don't live on IRC, so we can split off these topics that get derailed, and still be able to continue the conversation, in a more constructive manner, in a section designed to handle this.

I'd guess if/when it gets to a useful stage of development it will be good enough for Microsoft to lock them up in courts for decades!

Or, if they are turning into a bad apple (Excuse the pun), steal all good ideas, patent them, then sue the original company  :P
